The market makes perhaps 2 big moves a year. Each lasts maybe 6–12 weeks. The rest of the time, it consolidates the gains. So, Zanger wants to be in just 4 powerhouse stocks, let them run, then take profits and go to cash while the market resets. Rinse, repeat.

Explosive volume Big volume surges are a HUGE clue that institutions are making their move. To identify them, Zanger looks for relative volume (against the 20 MA) of >300%. The higher, the better.

Zanger watches 4–5 leaders. He enters on a breakout from a good base on big volume. Important: Don’t wait for a signal from the indices – a lagging indicator. Rather, get into the stocks that gap up on earnings while the overall market is collapsing. Improve your odds.

4. Pyramid into positions Gradually put your money to work. Start with smaller positions (in David’s case, usually 5%), then gradually increase them as they begin to work. Also, when a bull market is starting, you can’t yet identify the leaders. David therefore buys 5–7 stocks.
