My Latest - Shota Imanaga rarely ventures around Chicago outside of a quick trip to Dunkin' Donuts. After another stellar start, he's everything the Cubs could have hoped for and more.
‘‘The numbers . . . I don’t think you expect anyone to do that.’’
The Chicago Sun-Times is excited to welcome Kyle Williams (
@K_Williamsmedia
) to the newsroom as a
@Report4America
corps member covering girls high school sports in the Chicago area.
I’m incredibly blessed and fortunate to receive this scholarship. I’ll never forget where I was when I got the call. I’m very thankful that the Simmons Family Foundation started this grant with Northwestern that has allowed me - and others - to continue growing as journalists.
Congratulations to Kyle Williams (MSJ23) on becoming the second recipient of the Simmons Family Scholarship for Sports Journalism, a full-tuition grant launched by Medill in 2021 in partnership with the Simmons Family Foundation. Read more:
Personal News - I'm so happy to announce that starting in the fall, I will be attending
@MedillSchool
for my MSJ. I have to thank god for the opportunity to learn at such a great institution. Northwestern has always been my dream school, and I'm so happy that I can attend.

Yesterday ended my internship with Marquee Sports Network. I enjoyed the entire experience, from being in the office to being in the press box at Wrigley. It was a tremendous experience that I'll remember fondly!
My Latest — My first cover for the sports section!
Javier Assad entered spring training fighting for a rotation spot. Now, he’s one of the best starters for the Cubs.
He continued his strong start by throwing 6 scoreless innings on Sunday.
Medill alumnus
@K_Williamsmedia
(MSJ23) says as he has progressed in his field, he has recognized and appreciated even more those who paved the way for Black journalists to become editors and columnists. Read more about Williams:
Sincerely, thank you to anyone who has read my stories all season. I appreciate every coach and player who took the time to let me interview them and cover their programs.
There are a lot of talented girls in this state. I'm happy I got to cover them.
Connor Bedard said that he's felt the support from the Chicago fan base since he was drafted.
"For myself and my family, we’ve said how good the people are here, how welcoming it’s been so far."
#twoamericas
cuz the way so many of my Black friends and I were taught: if you calling an elder by their first name, that was a sign of DISRESPECT and you deff got scolded or worse.
Personal News - I'm excited to announce that I will be interning with the News & Observer this summer in their sports department! Thank you to
@jessicabanov
and
@NataliePierre_
for the opportunity.
My Latest — Brennen Davis was once atop the prospect lists. Now, he's trying to build back to the player was.
Davis talked about the young talent throughout the Cubs system, dealing with his injuries and his teammates helping him through his injuries.
The Bulls trading Dosunmu - which I don’t think they would - is a short-sighted move that has plagued the organization. The core has shown that they’re not right to bring the Bulls out of mediocrity, so it’s time to move off of them and retool.
Today was my last day as an intern with the
@newsobserver
, and this summer was amazing. Being in a new city and reporting on various stories full-time was all that I've ever wanted. I had a great opportunity to learn from many great people and talented journalists.
Sky guard Chennedy Carter’s bond with coach Teresa Weatherspoon could prove beneficial for both sides.
“Weatherspoon really allows me to be me, not even just in a basketball aspect, but the person Chennedy Carter.”
@clareweasler2
's charge with 26.1 seconds left essentially clinched the state championship for
@LAGirlsHoops
.
The Ramblers' offense generated the attention all season long, but their defense made them champions.
"The pride of our team is our defense.”
@HerbHoward411
But if Justin Fields was the QB for the Bears going forward, Poles wouldn’t have said he wanted to, “do right by Justin,” at the draft combine, no? Passing up on two No. 1 pick quarterbacks would be hard to do for Poles
MY LATEST - I talked with Jason Heyward about his Jay-Z-inspired tattoo, his work in the community, and how lessons he learned as a child resonate today.
#Cubs
Also, I appreciate everyone who's read or shared any of my work this summer!
The Miami Marlins wanted to hire a president of baseball operations over general manager Kim Ng, leading to her departure from the organization, sources told ESPN.
When reached, Ng declined comment. But sources said she would've been the No. 2 after constructing a playoff team.
The Sky finalized their 2024 roster today and Chennedy Carter made it.
Story from last week - I wrote about her journey and working with Teresa Weatherspoon could benefit her career.
Loyola put on a dominant performance in its Chicago Elite Classic debut. The Ramblers are a balanced group led by an exciting point guard in Aubrey Galvan, who finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
"She’s a special point guard."
Please read:
Loyola's defensive pressure helped the Ramblers clinch an undefeated regular season after a conference championship win over Montini.
“Our coach said, ‘They’re shooting really well right now, but we just have to settle in,'" Paige Engels said.
Ryan Clark being able to poignantly talk about the Damar Hamlin situation with the compassion needed is astounding. Such a powerful human being during an unfortunate situation
Brooke Carlson scored 39 points in her spectacular performance against Fremd. Carlson's performance was needed to lead the Bulldogs to the championship game.
Young's talented freshman Gaby Domercant is starting to find her stride over the past couple of weeks.
"She’s been shooting the ball extremely well the past couple of weeks. I think she’s finally getting her feel for the game."
My Latest — Mia Gaines' dominant 33-point, 23-rebound performance vaulted Hyde Park into the Public League Final Four. Her rapid development has been critical for the Thunderbirds this season.
My Latest — Evanston’s gym was overflowing with energy on Friday night. Those in attendance were treated to special performances on both sides, but Maine South guard Meegan Fahy led her team to the road win.
Read:
Erick Fedde didn’t know if the changes he implemented overseas would play it he majors.
Sunday’s strong outing proves that the right-hander can have success in the majors.
“Big-time, gutsy performance by Fedde,” manager Pedro Grifol said.
Richardson said Samuel Savoie will go back to juniors when he’s cleared, but also mentioned how the young forward has meshed in the locker room.
“Right from the first day of development camp last year after the draft, he’s a guy you can see is a real glue guy on a team.”
If I'm the Bulls, I'm having Patrick Williams watch film of DeAndre Hunter this summer. I understand everyone wants him to be Kawhi Leonard, but that's an extreme outcome. Hunter is still a very good wing and he was arguably Atlanta's best two-way player before he got injured.

More on Sunday's games at the Chicago Elite Classic in my notebook!
My Latest for
@CHGO_Sports
/
@CHGO_Bears
: Yes, the Bears traded Khalil mack. They don't have another outside corner opposite Jaylon Johnson. However, the Bears should use this off-season to rebuild the offense around Justin Fields.
Young entered the season with an inexperienced, but talented team.
Now, they’re city champions for the third consecutive season after knocking off Kenwood.
Words can’t express how appreciative I am of being awarded this scholarship. I’m just really blessed. Congrats to the other winners as well! Can’t wait to see the work they do.
“We’ve been thinking about it for a full year, so it’s nice to have it finally back where it belongs,” Kelsey Langston said.
On the Ramblers taking back the Jesuit Cup in their 63-37 win.
My Latest — Nazareth has a bulls-eye on its back as the defending state champions.
Despite facing a daunting schedule and receiving every team's best shot, the Roadrunners look poised to make another deep playoff run.
Young guard Destiny Jackson scored her 1,000th point last night in her team's win against Mother McAuley.
Fremd wakes up and almost completes a second-half comeback.
That, and more in my notebook:
Taylor Hall was on the ice skating today. Like Richardson said he’s progressing well. The team is doing a gym day tomorrow and will see how Hall is doing on Friday.
I was lucky enough to cover a Joakim Noah event at a local Boys and Girls club back in 2015. Noah does the work and interacts with those kids. Absolute no ego from him.
He’s not from Chicago, but he’s always embraced the city, even years after he donned that Bulls jersey.
Awesome: Former Bulls star Joakim Noah is launching “One City Basketball League” in Chicago this month in collaboration with 28 violence prevention groups. It will provide financial incentives for players, off-court programs and job opportunities.
Twenty years from now I’m going to talk about Jimmy Butler like a mythical figure. He’s one of those players who you just had to be there to witness. A master at work
I recently wrote about how COVID-19 has already had ramifications on the sports journalism industry in the present and what it could mean for the future of the industry.
My Latest — Homewood-Flossmoor has faced many of the top teams in the area already. Through those challenges, the team know what they need to do to win.
It starts with the balanced scoring approach H-F showed in its win over St. Ignatius.
Some of my favorite moments growing up was receiving my weekly issues of Sports Illustrated. The care and detail in each detail was superb. Some of my favorite moments in this business have been talking with Rick Telander about those days.
Awful, horrific news today.
Prospect Nick Nastrini will pitch tomorrow for the White Sox against the Royals.
Erick Fedde will pitch at some point in the series. The third starter will TBA.
The Bulls made two things clear at media day: They want to play with pace and space the floor.
That’s where the absence of Lonzo Ball is felt the most.
My Latest: The Hawks rank last in the NHL in high-danger scoring chances per minute, and 29th in expected goals per minute.
“We’re a team that needs goals. We’re starving for goals,” Foligno said.
Read about the state of the Hawks offense below!
“They can yell ‘boring’ all they want, but who won at the end of the night?”
The chant over their deliberate offensive approach didn’t faze the Hornets as they captured their first sectional championship since 1977.
My Latest:
Veteran forward Ryan Donato has bounced around between center and forward early this season. His upbeat nature has impressed coach Luke Richardson.
My Sports Saturday debut:
Ramirez is a Chicago native and coach at DePaul, who retired from professional softball a month ago. I talk with her and those close to her about her retirement, competing against her and what she was like off the field.
Sophomore Isabella Keberlein scored 11 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter. Her free-throw shooting was vital down the stretch in St. Ignatius’ win last night against Lane.
