Think about this, Michael Jordan, a 6’6 guard, scoring close to 40 PPG in what was a league dominated by Center’s throughout its history. It was the most since Wilt in 62-63, and is still the highest PPG by a guard/forward in NBA/ABA history.

Come playoff time the Bulls were up against the 6 seeded Cavaliers. In what was a 3-2 game series win MJ put up: 45.2 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 4.8 APG, 2.8 SPG, 1.6 BPG on 56% FG & 92% FT. Scottie Pippen put up: 10.6 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 2.4 APG, 0.8 SPG, 1.0 BPG. Just 35 PPG separating them.

Come playoffs, the Bulls were matched up against the Bucks lead by an all time defensive guard Sydney Moncrief and his sidekick Terry Cummings, both in their prime. The duo combined for 56 PPG and comfortably won 3-1 against a young Jordan and the Bulls.

Michael Jordan’s 1987-1988 was historic. It is to date the highest PPG of a DPOY ever, with only him and DRob having won the scoring title and DPOY in the same season. This was also 1 of 3 seasons in which a player won MVP and DPOY (Hakeem in 93-94 & Giannis in 19-20).

Let’s start off with the pre Jordan Bulls. The merger of the NBA/ABA resulted in the Bulls landing center Artis Gilmore, who along with Reggie Theus made up the 75-84 era. The Bulls struggled, making the playoffs just twice, hovering around the 10-12 seed for most seasons.

Now onto Mike’s sophomore season. With the Bulls at a record of 3-0, Jordan broke his foot. This injury kept him to just 18 games that season. Their record without him was 21-43, and with him it was 9-9. Despite a record of 30-52 the Bulls found their way into the playoffs.
