If I'm reading this right, I've just beaten 7,628,966 other people at Fantasy Football!
Unfortunately there were 7,628,967 other players, but I'll definitely take second place. Well done
@TooGoodFPL
for nailing the finish!

Whenever I find myself on the wrong end of a Havertz/Mount type decision like this in FPL, I console myself with the idea that I had all my good luck a couple of seasons ago, and can just enjoy the ups and downs of playing the game.
Must suck for the rest of you, though.
Wow, so it looks like the longest FPL season is getting even longer...
For everyone tweeting, I don't know what's going on either - I had an email from FPL this morning telling me that I've won(!), but I don't know why...
I've been trying to find the right words to respond, and this says it all for me. Whether you think disqualification was the right decision or not, some things are more important than who gets to say they won

"It isn't much different from most of your football banter chats" โ
"The reason for my disqualification is a moment of frustration" โ
"It's not something I said directly towards a footballer" โ
In a season where you got so much right, you got *everything* wrong here.
Think I could be on for my first 100 points of the season this week!
All I need is a return from Salah, Coufal clean sheet, Antonio goal, and for Jota to score 13 goals against City
Lots of people asking if they should wildcard or not...I asked myself that too after a pretty dire gameweek. But looking at my team, I still can't convince myself that using my wildcard now is the best idea. (Hey, it's a thread!)
(...and to address the obvious - clearly this isn't how I would have wanted to win, and I don't know any more than the rest of you about what's happened!)
Ok, actual FPL tweet:
Why is everyone so certain Tsimikas is a good starter? If Robertson's back in a few weeks then you're locking in a transfer at a price point that you're not likely to find a nice replacement at, and blocking a Liverpool spot at the same time.

Pleased to announce that the first episode of our new FPL podcast will be dropping today with celebrity co-hosts Magnus Carlsen and Patrick Bamford! This week we take a deep dive into how managers use FPL knowledge in real life team selection, with special guest Pep Guardiola
I saw three tweets yesterday about why small sample sizes can cause problems in interpreting statistics accurately, and only one tweet that thought it wasn't an issue.
I'm really glad that 75% of people get it now, it gives me hope as a mathematician.
Think I've decided on a plan for the new DGWs. I'm going to buy good players with reasonable fixtures that I think will score points, and put them in my fantasy football team.
Thanks everyone for the lovely comments on last night's talk! It's now available on youtube - if you have any in depth questions feel free to ask them there, I'm going to reply to some later on.
Or pop it on twitter, hopefully I'll see!
This gameweek for me has been: open the BBC sport app...hit head against the wall a few times...close the app...go and do something else and pretend football doesn't exist.
At least Ipswich won.
Some might think I've offended the FPL twitter template enough for one day, but here goes the next one:
I'm pretty heavily leaning towards no Bruno at the moment...
I have a guilty confession - Saints are my second team! I'm an
@IpswichTown
fan really, but FPL only lets you pick a premier league team to support and I was a student in Southampton so tend to follow them more than the others!
Joshua Bull, I salute you sir! If you are on Twitter, let's hear from you
Currently no.1 in

We would all LOVE to know how you have done it, a huge improvement on your previous best of 1.3m
Let's do a video podcast, fellow Saints fan ๐
Think I'm probably going to captain Salah this week. I thought a lot about Haaland, and then remembered that I still don't own him for some reason so decided that probably wasn't an option after all.
This aged well!
Every time I go for a run, someone I own seems to score. If this keeps happening, I'm going to be really healthy by the end of the season.
FPL twitter advice: the good news is, you don't have less than 11 players this week. The bad news is, you have fewer than 11.
The difference comes down to whether it's countable or not. Having FEWER than 11 players gives you LESS chance of accumulating points.
Happy to help.
@FPL__Raptor
Don't worry, it's actually quite straightforward! There's a transfer tab on the website - it's not that obvious at first, but once you've found it it lets you swap your current players out for other ones that you don't own. Hope that helps!

Negative things I learned today: If you're drinking Diet Coke from a wine class while in a Zoom meeting, people will assume it's red wine
Positive things I learned today: sounds like you can happily drink red wine in Zoom meetings as long as you tell people that it's Diet Coke
Man U fans trying to get the game tonight cancelled is the epitome of football fans throwing their toys out of the pram because things aren't going their way
Finally pulled the trigger on my

Huge shout out to
@goodteamonpaper
! I saw a few of these floating around twitter and asked if they could make me one from that season I did well in. Despite FPL removing the data each season, they took my old spreadsheet and turned it into this beauty!
It is gorgeous. Thanks!
This has got to be the lowest scoring FPL gameweek in at least 2 or 3 seasons.
*Checks notes*
Sorry, let me try that again:
This has got to be the lowest scoring FPL gameweek in at least 2 or 3 weeks.
A lot of people are commenting on my last post saying that FPL has ruined your day...don't let it! Remember it's a game, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. If you're spending your Sunday swearing at the TV, go for a walk or something instead - it's lovely out there today!
Random FPL question: does anyone know some of the most successful teams (from any season) which are 'managed' by a computer? As in making transfers based only on stats, deep learning, other algorithms etc?
Hope youโve enjoyed the season.
Credit to anyone top 50k which I think is now the benchmark.
Top 10k is real Champs League stuff and anything above that is now a really special achievement
Big congrats to everyone whoโs done well or learned new skills & improved this year
I would like to take full credit for anyone who thinks my lecture gained you points.
If you think it lost you points, that's your fault, leave me out of it ๐
Just finished watching
@JoshuaABull
โs brilliant talk on the role of mathematic modelling in FPL. Absolutely outstanding ๐๐ผ two things Iโve taken from it for this week:
Roll my transfer.
Captain Aubameyang.
People who got stuck on Haaland captain should learn to just do transfers earlier, then you could have got your Cancelo captaincy sorted in plenty of time, like me
NO VARDY, NO PARTY
Can be played in any gameweek when you own Jamie Vardy.
Has no effect on your FPL team, but you get an exclusive invite to a party after the match with other Vardy owners, and possibly the man himself.
If you only have a moment to consider stats in FPL, use xG, the expected value of the goals distribution.
If you have a second moment, use it to consider variance.
If you have a third moment, you might want to think about skewness.
Use your fourth moment to describe kurtosis.
Looking ahead, gameweek four is going to pose a real problem for a lot of FPL managers.
It's going to be really hard to target Arsenal if we have to triple up on Norwich by then...
I'm really hyped for this!!! I get to talk about how
#maths
can help us with
#FPL
, even if it's not an exact science. I've had a lot of fun modelling Fantasy Football over the last few weeks, and it might even give a bit of insight into different approaches to the game...!

No Bruno the biggest risk, I think, and I'd like Buendia, but I like the money structure and can't see anything that's a guaranteed fire in a couple of weeks time!
Famous. Last. Words.
Good luck everyone!
A lot of people were asking for the bracket yesterday - here's my prediction for the "most likely" winner of each stage.
Although this is "most likely", it's still statistically very unlikely to be spot on - just more likely than other alternative scenarios!

Very pleased to announce that a good friend of mine has been named interim manager of Burnley!
At least, that's what he said when I asked who the club had named.
Yeah, they call me Mr Premier League ๐
Exciting times, here at

Merry Christmas Everyone!
Just got to the bit in Love Actually where Colin Firth leaves his family to sit in a queue at Dover while he waits for a Covid test so he can run off to France and get EU citizenship by marrying his Portuguese cleaner. Seems a fitting end to 2020 tbh
Just in case anyone didn't have him on their radar, I've heard quite good things about this Ronaldo guy and reckon he might be a pretty good FPL asset. One for the watchlist, maybe.
My prediction for Turkey vs Whales is strongly dependent on where the match happens.
This one appears to be on land, which surely has to favour the Turkey
Over lockdown I thought I'd broken my tea addiction as I've had roughly half the number of cups a day I would in the office. But I had to be out of the house today so I'm "working from work" now.
Now I realise that my mugs at home are about twice the size of the ones here...
PRISONERS DILEMMA
Each week, you and your minileague rival can choose to play the chip or not. If only one of you plays it, that person gets double points from the vice captain as well as captain.
If both of you play it, neither of you get double points from your captains.
Apologies to all the
#FPL
people following me expecting deep insights - not only am I just getting weirdly lucky, but most of my tweeting is about maths :P
