I’m still in quite the disbelief…. But I got it!!! Y’all have no idea how much this means to me… my grandmother passed away earlier this week, and I know she is working her magic up there already. This one is for you Abuelita 🙏🏽♥️ QEPD

This one hits home. I'm embarrassed to talk about my past, but it's hard not remembering it when I visit home for the holidays. I was arrested in the 8th grade and expelled from school for selling drugs. I was "the bad kid" and you'd be silly to have bet on my success one day.
@ivancedric_a
That’s how we do it in Mexico. It’s always weird explaining it, but I never opt to use the “cousin removed thing” because I think the language I’m choosing/ use to is important. 🤔
Having a bit of a “pat myself on the back” moment here but super proud of myself rn. The fact a year ago I thought I could never master ephys, yet here I am double patching in all sorts of brain areas and cell types 🤪 it’s hard but so fricken satisfying!

I am honored to announce that I will be featured in the upcoming Rising Stars in Neuroscience Symposium hosted by the Depart of Neurobiology at the University of Utah!
@UUNeurobiology
I’m so excited to participate! ☺️☺️☺️
I am very honored and grateful for receiving the Best Student Leadership Award at the inaugural
@VUBasicSciences
Hispanic and Latinx conference today. I enjoyed learning so much from talented and impassioned speakers today. Not a Dr. though, yet 🤞🏽😅
Had an interesting epiphany about melons today. Roughly ten years ago I was working in the fields picking melons. I later got a job at whole foods where I cut melons for fruit platters and delivered them, one of those destinations was the lab I would eventually join at MIT. 1/n
I’m honored to share that I’ve received the
#SfN
Trainee Professional Development Award to attend SfN 2022! This will be my first time attending
#SfN
and I just can’t wait! :D
I am beyond honored to share that I was awarded the best oral presentation award at today’s 18th annual
@VUMC_Anes
symposium. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to my share work today 🥺
After my car broke down yesterday I really needed some good news: I’m proud to announce that I’ve been selected as a Hispanic Fund Scholar! This has been a dream of mine since I learned of the fund back in undergrad. I’m humbled and honored! 🥺🥺🥺
I’m beyond ecstatic to receive a Presenter’s Award for my poster presentation at
#SACNAS2022
! It’s truly such an honor to be a part of this wonderful community.
Someone yesterday told me ephys was a technology from the 70’s that’s going to be replaced any day now… 😂 admittedly a newer student… had to bite my tongue. Recording some ion channel action today feels extra good. 😅
I am beyond ecstatic to share our work demonstrating direct action by G-proteins at the SNARE complex at select Gi/o-GPCR systems within the Nucleus Accumbens. 1/n
Please Retweet! ** Dear all, it is an outstanding honor to share that I am on the ballot for the position of Student Board Member for the SACNAS Board of Directors.

I am beyond ecstatic to share that I will be officially joining the
@GrueterLabVandy
where I will be studying synaptic plasticity in reward circuitry! Cool brain science incoming, stay tuned... 🥰🔬🥼👨🏻🔬🧪🧫
And I guess the epiphany I had today is that... one day I might be ordering fruit platters for a lab too. Maybe my lab? And most importantly... that one day I hope to be in a position to help so many people who might pick fruit and be interested in science to get here too. 3/n
Congratulations to
@JoseC_Zepeda
who has won a prize package for his 5-minute lightening talk during the Graduate School Sesquicentennial Scholarship Exhibition!!!!
Huge congratulations to my amazing rig room buddy
@veronikakondev
for being awarded the FOUNDER’S MEDAL 🥇 one of if not THE highest honor from Vanderbilt School of Medicine 🥺🥺🥺🥳🥳🥳😭😭😭
When I sign my emails with "humbly" I really mean that. It's taken so much mentorship and help from others, some gone, to get here. Enjoy your fruit when you have it, and don't forget to say thanks to the people who provided it to you. 4/
Scientists of Twitter! The world needs more reminders that we're living, breathing human beings.
Quote tweet this with a picture of you doing not-science.
I used to work as a mechanic and enjoy working on cars during my free time. :)

Wish there was more support for students from low SES pursuing phds. The best I ever lived before now was section 8. I’ve had it worse. But i get the same amount of help as colleagues who are buying cars and houses with parents money and I’m here stressing about finances erday…
Ok, gosh I don't know why I'm being so lucky this month (I'm turning 30 I guess), anyway, I am beyond ecstatic to share that I will be showcasing my research for the Vanderbilt Sesquicentennial Celebration! If you're interested in joining me, please RSVP at the link in reply!
Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! :) We see you and we appreciate you! I have benefited from the mentorship in science of sooo many kickass women who are kicking ass despite odds and obstacles. My journey would not be possible without you 🙏🏽
I remember the first day I saw that Whole Foods fruit platter during one of our lab meetings. I nearly burst in tears of joy and went around telling all my labmates how I used to deliver them. I remember thinking: Sheesh, I went from picking to cutting, to eating them. 2/n
I want to give special thanks to my many mentors, old and new, who have made this path possible. Thank you for always supporting and believing in me, I wouldn’t be here without you! 🙏🏽 ♥️

It’s so lovely to see our
@SACNAS
community growing on campus! This is an organization that changed my life and I can only hope we impact and help more people reach their fullest potential, one chapter at a time. ☺️🥹
I really appreciate applications that ask for complete working history and not just science experiences. As someone who started working at 13, with over 15 official jobs before science, idk I like for that experience to be included in my evaluation...
Life gets rough, like, it can get really really bad. Every day is like a fight and you’re going to lose some no matter how good you are at fighting. Get back up and keep punching back. Every winner was once a loser. Remember to count your many blessings, and keep your head up.
I’ll be presenting a poster at
#SfN2022
on Saturday (12th) from 1-5pm, then during then at the TPDA session from 6:30-8:30pm. Come by if you’d like to learn about SNAP-25 and G protein interactions as a motif for inhibition of excitatory transmission in the nucleus accumbens. :)
Had one of the fanciest lunches of my life today and got to meet many of the world’s leaders in the biomedical sciences today at the Board of Visitors lunch. Thank you for this amazing opportunity
@VUbretASPIRE

I'm really excited to participate as a

student alumni panelist this morning. It's so nice to be able to give back to an organization that has been so instrumental to my growth as a scientist!

I’ve kept pretty quiet for a while but if I leave academia soon let it be known the first reason was money, the second was mental health. And the two are related to each other here.
Please join us for our inaugural Platiquemos de Ciencia! Acompáñanos para nuestro primer evento de “Platiquemos de Ciencia” 🥳 please RT! Por favor compartir! 🙏🏽☺️
Are you a Spanish-speaking scientist at

?
Doing full-time science in English can make it hard to translate your findings to your native language, so...

pointed out the lab’s current supply (which I was drinking from) is decaf 😂 🤪 🙈
What are the odds that two previous

Dead frog, hamsa hand and alligator claw on electrophysiology rig. I walk out of the room immediately after a patch to “give the neuron some space” and monitor through remote screen. I’m not superstitious, just a little stitious.

Every day I am grateful of all of the people who helped me and gave me good advice. So many people accepted me into their homes, took a chance on me with jobs… I view these people like family and they will always have me in their corner.
I’m flattered to share that I am going to be featured in the Poetry of Science program! This will be such a wonderful fusion of scientific and artistic talent from Boston. Come support if you can!!!
one way I save lots of money is doing work on my own car. Wish my Dad was still around to see me using everything he taught me. What I wouldn’t give for walking thru the junkyard with him one more time.
My favorite thing about what I do is nerding out with others and generating hypotheses and theories. The most powerful instrument in any lab is the chalkboard/whiteboard. I’m truly so privileged and grateful to be able to be a scientist and do what I love every day. 🥹
Between registration, travel (airfare and ground transportation), lodging (assuming you share a room with someone), and food… these scientific research conference costs are like $2500… but the travel awards be like $500-1500, if you’re lucky enough to get one
If you missed my poster earlier

I used to be embarrassed about this but it really only takes ONE 🙌🏾 and I am thriving ✨
And no, by stressing about finances I do NOT mean wanting to buy an xbox or having more for going out etc. I mean I have to pawn half my shit to afford to travel every time a family member dies.
As happy as I was I became frustrated with my position. Agriculture paid poorly, and it was hard work. I saved up enough money to fly up to Boston to pursue an education. The rest has been a dream.
By age 12 I was engulfed in gang crime and violence. My mom was deported to Mexico when I was 12 and I was coming from a poor family and neighborhood.
When I got to Mexico I wanted to be feared and respected. It was my way of demanding control in my world.
After a couple of failed attempts on my life I started to think differently. Many of my friends weren’t so lucky. I’m so grateful to have survived in one piece. But every day I mourn that I had to learn the hard way before I could help them escape too.
Around age 16 I skipped town and started working honestly, all sorts of jobs.. washing cars, selling fish, harvesting fruit, as a mechanic, you name it… I really enjoyed the freedom of not having to worry about getting stabbed or going to jail.
Let your hardships refine you, but never define you.
So cliche maybe, not sure where I heard it, but it’s important to recollect on your struggles often and use them to empower yourself. This is the only viable route for growth.
Also for the record I recognize that I am still far away from mastery and am very aware some people are doing all sorts of crazy opto, quadpatch, axon patch etc etc. you have to celebrate the small victories along they though ☺️

Oh, and in case any non-electrophysiologists missed it, the second pumpkin from the left is supposed to be Brad poking fun at me from when I had “scary noise” on the rig I use 😒😂
Gosh, coming from a humble family I resonate so much with this. I’m never referring to those people as having “afforded” something they themselves clearly haven’t, ever again. 👏🏽
I highly highly endorse working at the Sur Lab. I could not have asked for a better experience as an undergrad there. I felt very supported and welcome at all times, and enjoyed science there so much I decided to pursue a PhD :)

Working on a piece of writing that aims to move away from using "underrepresented minority (URM)" and more towards "historically excluded and marginalized" when describing students from said backgrounds, has anyone encountered an acronym for the latter?

You simply won’t understand this “micro” aggression until you experience it. Keep your heads up. If you’re here “in spite of” it’s because you’re running circles around your peers.
This notion of it being easier for us makes my blood boil. As a MS1 I was walking around LA minding my business w/ a “UCLA medicine” sweater when some random old white man stopped to ask if I got into med school more easily because I’m a “minority.” The AUDACITY
