Steve Platt, highest scoring player in Indiana college basketball history, lost his battle with cancer last night. Platt scored 3,700 points and averaged 33.0 a game at Huntington College.

Did you know? There have been 108 boys' basketball tournaments, and Lebanon is the only school that has played in every one. Lafayette Jeff, Orleans and Whiting all have played in 107.

I’m at my grandson’s 5th-grade game at HSE. It’s halftime, and he’s scored half of his team’s points. They lead 18-14. Like everyone else, I won’t report the final score.

Lawrence Central lost 3 games this season, all to Lawrence North. In the past 35 years of boys' basketball, I found one other instance of that happening. Jac-Cen-Del's only 3 losses in 1996-97 were all to Batesville (86-75, 70-48, 71-69).

Scottsburg and Brownstown Central made the Mid-Southern the first conference to win two boys' state titles in the same year. Forest Park and Tecumseh of the Pocket Conference won girls' state titles in 2022.

I found no instance of a 1A school beating a 6A school in football (6A began in 2013). The only 2A wins over 6A were: Providence 35, Jeffersonville 13, 9/27/2013 Providence 15, New Albany 14, 8/23/2014 Providence 36, Jeffersonville 33, 9/23/2016

Spent today at the state marching band finals at Lucas Oil. After many near-misses, the Marching Mustangs (with 2 of my grandsons) won the first team championship in anything in the 60-year history of Edgewood High School.

Friday matches bye teams with first-round winners in a lot of cases. I came across an incredible statistic today. Bye teams have a record of 1159-2017 (.365) since the start of sectional play in 1915. Bye teams in the class era are 546-894 (.379).

It's extra games. IHSAA gave teams 2 more games a few years ago. Add to that are a lot of 4-game, 16-team tournaments. Damon played in 82 regular-season games in his career. Some kids now will play in 98.

In 1911, IU invited the best teams from each of Indiana's 12 congressional districts for what eventually became the first IHSAA tournament. Did you know that in 1911 Indiana had more congressional districts than California? That's right. Indiana had more people than California.

I was 47-17 in game predictions tonight, giving me a sectional total of 260-76 (.774). Even worse, I picked only 29 sectional champs correctly, missing 35. I've been doing this for 60 years, and I don't ever remember a worse year.

Stats: I counted 25 teams that will play sectional finals on their home court tonight. Home teams are 55-39 in the tournament. Private schools are 37-13 against public schools. Teams that received a bye into the semifinals went 29-60 against teams that won Tuesday or Wednesday.

Cole Wireman led 1A Final Four scoring with 50 points in the semistate and state. That's the highest total for a 1A Final Four since 2005. The 1A record is 73 by Justin Barnard of Waldron in 2004.

Crown Point's senior class finished their 4-year careers unbeaten at home. I found 5 other girls teams in this century that did that: Ben Davis (2010 and 2011 senior classes), Mater Dei (2015), Homestead (2017), Marquette (2019) and Oak Hill (2010).

I was 122-6 (.953) on girls' sectional predictions Friday night, bringing my tournament total to 185-13 (.934). I had 2 close calls: I predicted Lawrenceburg to win 54-36 and it won 55-37, and I had Twin Lakes to win 46-45 and it won 47-45.

According to the IHSAA program, Northwestern has 615 students. The smallest school to win an Open or 4A state girls basketball championship was Heritage with 695 students in 1982.
