In 50 years of marriage who but God can say how many
angels were dispatched,
devils defeated,
snares foiled, and
sins forgiven!
Incalculable the miracle of marriage.
I received a letter this morning informing me that I have come into the inheritance of unimaginable wealth. I am the legal heir now, will enjoy the best part of it the moment I die, and the rest when Jesus comes. I understand the same letter has been sent to millions.
Qualifications for the new Pope that would bear most fruit. He should believe that
justification is by faith alone,
baptism is a sign not a cause of regeneration,
Christ is at the Lord’s Supper by memory and faith not physically,
the Bible alone has final authority not the pope.
Dec. 21, 1968 - Dec. 21, 2018
Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made:
Our times are in His hand
Who saith, "A whole I planned,
Youth shows but half; trust God: see all, nor be afraid!"
(Robert Browning)
Among the many reasons why I need to read the Bible every day:
“Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.” Proverbs 12:25
Reasons not to complain after five hours sitting in a Delta airplane on the runway in Atlanta: Totally comfortable AC. Restrooms that work. Drinking water. Endless video options, including NFL. Good lighting to read good books. Uncomplaining passengers. Invincible Romans 8:28.
49 years of grace with her. Today.
I will not fill
My heart with longing for the less,
But cherish what I now possess.
And we, embracing what we see,
And what we don’t, and yet will be,
Together seize with faces bright,
The dawn of ev’ry coming night.
“Jesus told them plainly, ‘Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe.’” John 11:14–15
The school of faith has some very hard courses in it.
The eternally significant question for Trump and Biden today is not, “Was I elected?” But am I among God’s elect?
They may confirm this by humbly and joyfully exulting in Jesus Christ as their Savior and as their supreme Treasure.
Let it sink in that you have no power whatsoever to cause your heart to beat one beat longer than God decides.
So be ready at every second gladly to die and be with Christ.
“If the Lord wills, we will live.“ James 4:15
Now! Live with all your might, while you live!

“The world will let a man go to hell quietly, and never try to stop him. The world will never let a man go to heaven quietly – they will do all they can to turn them back.” — JC Ryle
"Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” Psalm 27:14. Not meaning: Do nothing. But: As you act in obedience, humbly and confidently expect the Lord to act in and through your acting.
"The sons of Eli were worthless men. They did not know the Lord." 1 Samuel 2:12-13
They were priests!
Do not assume that those who make their living by religion know God.
Do you think your sin is unforgivable?
Peter offered forgiveness to those who murdered the Son of God.
“You killed the Author of life... Repent, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out.” Acts 3:15, 19
Don’t exalt your sin above the power of Jesus’ blood.
Jesus: "Will you lay down your life for me, Peter? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.” John 13:38
Words of allegiance without willingness to die are empty.
When someone asks, “How can I know the will of God for my life?“ I love to say, “I know the will of God for your life.“
“This is the will of God, your sanctification.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3
Then add: Make holiness, for Jesus’ sake, your supreme passion, and God will guide you.
My most go-to, faith-sustaining, trouble-shooting promise.
“Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
65 years ago today the missionaries Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint, and Roger Youderian were killed by the Huaorani Indians.
One of the legacies of this sacrifice is Jim Elliot’s motto: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
By all means plan. Don’t just drift into 2021.
But when all the plans are formed and pursued, trust the perfect purposes of God for his children, not your plans.
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21
God to Joshua: "You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess." Joshua 13:2
Can you see why I would love this text? In fact I’ve been loving it for 15 years.
"For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6
What is better than being alive in 2020?
"Your steadfast love, O Lord, is better than life... So I will bless you as long as I live.” Psalm 63:3-4
Better than life!
“No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the Lord.” Proverbs 21:30
Therefore, how wise, how full of good counsel it is to stand with the Lord.
"Peter was sleeping between two soldiers.” Acts 12:6
In prison.
Bound with chains.
Between two soldiers.
To be executed the next day.
Sleeping.
Peter had come along way.
2021
"The mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10
“A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.” Proverbs 18:2
A word of caution to all Christians on Twitter. Beware of simply loving to see the splash of your own opinions.
"There is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” Luke 15:7
“I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:10
You are never wasting your time loving one person.
And when I come to die
Oh, and when I come to die
And when I come to die, give me Jesus
Give me Jesus
Give me Jesus
You can have all this world
Give me Jesus
“See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.” 1 Thessalonians 5:15
Such teaching is rooted in Jesus Christ, who “when he was reviled, did not revile in return; and when he suffered, did not threaten.” 1 Peter 2:23
“Whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord.“ Ephesians 6:8. This is staggering! Every loss restored, every pain compensated, at the end of the path of love.
As 2019 closes I say with thanks,
"You have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.” Psalm 63:7
And when I wake in 2020, I say with hope,
“My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me." Psalm 63:8
I did not sign and would not sign "Christians Against Trumpism & Political Extremism." My name is being used without my permission. I do not endorse any of the organizations listed here.
A prayer for every day:
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
If you are an aging Christian, and you think: How can it be Friday, wasn’t it Friday just yesterday? Remember, your life is not speeding away. Your Life is fast approaching.
"You give them something to eat.” Mark 6:37
The “You“ were the disciples.
The “Them“ were 5000 men, plus women and children.
“Something to eat” was virtually nothing.
So don’t assume God doesn’t have something great for you to do just because you lack resources.
"Three times I pleaded with the Lord [to remove my pain]. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’" 2 Cor. 12:8-9. Ponder the implications for prayer, for suffering, and for the supremacy of Christ in the purposes of Christ.
“Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.” Psalm 126.5-6
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
Confirmed by the risen Christ to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20
I want my family and my church to know that after I die, if they see me in a vision telling them what heaven is like, that vision will have infinitely less authority than what they read in the Scriptures. This thought is meant to rivet our excitement on the word of God!
“I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16
Don’t be ashamed of God. Don’t be ashamed of Christ. Don’t be ashamed of the good news.
"O Lord, give me an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern your great people?” 1 Kings 3:9
Would that every president, governor, mayor, and congressman would feel and pray like this. In Jesus’ name.
