I’m so grateful to voters across the 5th District for supporting our campaign. The challenges our communities face are great. But I know that together, we can deliver real change & new leadership for Alameda County — a future founded on health, safety & opportunity for everyone.
Deploying 6 police cars to arrest kids for not having a “bicycle license” while there were a dozen mass shootings in the past 48 hours by people who can get guns with almost no restrictions is what a broken society looks like.
At a business mixer tonight an attendee heard I had biked to the event and said “I hate bicyclists so much. I would absolutely run you over and kill you if we left here at the same time. You don’t belong on the road.”
Two hours later and I’m still processing all of it.
If all cars were replaced with transit you would:
- end drunk driving
- end road rage
- eliminate the need for highways, ending billions in wasteful spending
- reduce need for parking, making room for housing and better open space
Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good
@JohnBauters
If all cars were AVs driven by robots you would:
- end drunk driving
- end road rage
- vastly reduce need for highway patrol, since AVs can be programmed to not speed
- reduce need for parking
Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good
I’m humbled that many of you want me to move and run for mayor of your city. But given how popular one tweet about giving streets back to people is, it should be proof that a critical mass of people who know that a better world exists — you all need to run in your own towns!
BREAKING: After much deliberation, we have decided to decline the opportunity to host the next NASCAR street race because, frankly, there are better and much more important things for us to do with our streets.
Stop asking why a straight married father is at a gay bar. He is an ally and a hero.
LGTBQ+ people and parents go to straight bars all the time. Nobody asks us why we are there.
The reason is the same: we love our children and the broader community.

For anyone who grew up in Michigan in the past 40 years, watching what is happening there since Democrats took control of the government for the first time since 1983 is the most incredible thing ever.
I watched this on repeat for several minutes. It feels unreal.
Michigan Democrats just gained full control of government for the first time in 40 years.
They just passed universal background checks, codified LGBT rights, and enacted the right to join a union. Here they are zooming through bullshit GOP amendments:
So I took some private time to come see Allie’s bike. She was 5 years old. She died about a block from her home, next to a playground, a school, and a church. I tried to make a short video to share my thoughts on safe routes to schools but I cried too much.
We must do better. 💔
I am deeply humbled (but also crazy excited!) to announce that I am one of several US elected officials who has been invited to the Netherlands this fall for an Urban Mobility Study Tour hosted by the Dutch Government.
And yes, I am going. 🚲🇳🇱🌷

If your response to hearing cyclists die due to unsafe road conditions is to say this an unfortunate but inevitable reality in order for us to have cars, then I know you understand when I say killing parking spaces is an unfortunate but inevitable reality for us to have bikes.
THREAD: When the pandemic began and people were first instructed to stay at home, cars were off the streets, the skies cleared, and you could hear birds where you normally heard traffic. People clamored to go outside and empty streets were an invitation to reimagine our cities...
My message to every other local elected official who sides with arguments that claim people currently don’t bike on a road so why replace parking with a bike lane: never apologize for prioritizing the safety of all community members over the convenience to some.

My mother turned 66 years old on Thursday. This morning she texted me this picture with a note: “I biked 8 miles today in 34 degrees. I never understood how you enjoyed doing this in every kind of weather, all year long. I think today I finally do. Love, Mom.”
How do I know you’re a new contractor in our city?
You violate our condition of approval that requires no construction signs be put in the bike lanes.
4 moved signs. 1 email. We move forward.
Many US Airports do not connect well (or at all) with transit. I think DC National Airport connecting to
@wmata
is one of the better examples of a good connection. Which other ones do folks like?
Ghent 🇧🇪 knows what’s going on. Pedestrian and transit-only spaces make for people-oriented communities. Throw in some banana ice cream and you have my politics.

It's simple: no pricey apartments without parking next to your single-family home! Let's ensure fair neighborhood planning and prioritize the needs of residents.
🚨Bicycle-Pedestrian Infra Alert🚨
We got this developer to blow a hole through a ~100 year old building for bike-ped connectivity. Will connect to 500 new homes, playground, new 1.5-acre city park, the Greenway, & new dog park using people-oriented infrastructure.

The more people complain about the totally normal, reasonable, 15-minute city, the more I am convinced that their anger is righteous.
We should have 5-minute cities.
Just had a Councilmember from an east coast city tell me they know all about our little town because multiple residents have come to their council asking them to install bus seating at every bus stop, citing our work. Never doubt your ability to change the world thru positivity.
Children are, have been, and will always be the primary reason behind why I show up every day for safer street design and people-oriented cities. Safer and more equitable communities are possible when we prioritize making cities accessible to the smallest of our constituents.
If your city can afford to spend $400,000 to further study and delay already-approved bike infra that provides safety and meaningful choices to residents, then it has has the money to add 3-5 more blocks to the original project.
BART wasn’t open early enough for me to make my flight this morning so I took a Rideshare. The driver complained about bridge tolls and claimed the money “doesn’t go to anything.”
Here’s what really happens with your toll money. 👇🏼
It is with great excitement that I announce the Bike Path THROUGH the Emeryville Lab is officially open. It connects the 45th & Horton Street Bike Blvds to the Emeryville Greenway and a new city park and playground.
Dream Big.
Build people-oriented cities.

not by spending more money on the empty promise of enforcement, but on safe street infrastructure.
For those who have asked: the employer of the person who threatened the safety of myself and other cyclists the other night has confirmed that they have appropriately addressed the matter through an internal process. They will also pursue adding a bike share at their business.
Car traffic exceeds highway capacity, government pours billions of dollars into widening highway, induces more people to drive, repeat.
Transit system needs investment to be modernized/updated for first time in 50 years, government response: “transit is not sustainable.”
Had a lovely cycling tour of Utrecht and Houten today. Spoke with

about the American assumption that what the Dutch have done with bike infrastructure can’t be replicated back home. 👇🏼
The Greatest SLOP of all-time,
@giselefetterman
, mailed me Giant Braddock Sunflower seeds from Braddock, PA to start a little sunflower garden in Emeryville next spring.
Lead with love & the seeds of your work will leave a garden of hope in the hearts of others.

I get asked regularly why I push so hard for safe streets. This five year old girl biking safely home with her parents in Emeryville is exactly why I do it. ❤️❤️❤️

“I’m biking on the street all by myself!” Coming home from dinner tonight. Forget 8-80. She’s 5. Make this safe for everyone, everywhere. Thank you!
As a “progressive leftist” from Michigan who doesn’t own skinny jeans, has never had coffee in my entire life and just solo-hiked across most Michigan’s upper peninsula for the month of August, all I have to say is:
His wood chopping technique is terrible. The man is a poser.
In a meeting where someone is claiming to be an environmental champion and arguing that we need more overpasses and wider highways to end pollution from idling.
Lord, give me strength.
Some people have made fun of my Twitter page for being “limited” to transit/bikes, housing, environment, and my dog.
Sorry, but I’m just not an expert on Russian military operations, submersible vessels, and cryptocurrency like the rest of you.
🤷🏻♂️
As a pedestrian and a cyclist, I find the autonomous vs human driver debate maddening. It’s still a car that operates on poorly designed streets that have unsafe speed limits, creates noise & air pollution, is overbuilt & under-regulated, and kills thousands of children annually.
I’m off to DC to make a final pitch to federal DOT to close the funding gap on our visionary plan to transform one of our largest car-centric corridors into a safe, livable, multimodal one. I believe we can overcome barriers from our past and become the community we dream to be.
The media has normalized vehicles parking in bike lanes and on sidewalks so much that despite bike routes being made unsafe thousands of times a day across the Bay Area, I have never seen a story about the “dangerous and bizarre” practice of bike lanes being occupied by vehicles.
Local small biz owner emails me and says he and employees bike to work at a local taqueria and now their customers are biking too and there aren’t enough bike rack spaces. Asked last week for more racks. This week he got more racks.
That’s 👏🏼 how 👏🏼 you 👏🏼 encourage 👏🏼 cycling.
If you’re going to (falsely) claim there is no street parking on weekday mornings near your home in an effort to change street design, best believe I will take my morning walk to your street and photo document the actual conditions before Transpo. Committee votes on your request.
I can’t believe there are county supervisors in California falling over themselves to promote putting a tunnel for cars under their cities while calling it “technology” and “innovation.”
Please— just stop.
Today is
#WorldCarFreeDay
. Every follower who supports creating car-free spaces is encouraged to post a photo of themselves walking, biking, taking transit or another non-car trip as a reply to this post.
I have a prize for one randomly selected reply at the end of the day!
Every year when we do our repaving program we integrate bike and ped improvements into the contract. This past fall we added protected bike facilities to all schools, including a diverter on 47th and protected intersections on Adeline. We removed ~25 parking spaces for this one.
@JohnBauters
just wanted to say thank you for this. I know how hard you’re working to build these, and I want you to know how much we appreciate it. It makes school drop off so much safer and less stressful. 🚲
@NancyEditor8
I encourage bicyclists to follow the rules of the road regularly. I hand out free bike lights on our bike routes. I grew up learning and riding bikes in Grand Rapids. Could you tell drivers there to stop at stop signs? I was almost killed going to school at age 9 by a driver.
The best part of being a pedestrian is that when you discover a new empanada place opened, you just stop what you’re doing and get one. Cafe Buenos Aires is now open at Powell & Hollis. Noel told me ice cream is coming to the menu in a few weeks. Walkable spaces help small biz.
OMG I MOVED NEXT TO AN IKEA CAUSE I WANTED THE BENEFIT OF REGIONAL-SERVING RETAIL BUT THESE LOUD CAL STUDENTS ARE BUYING SELF-ASSEMBLY FURNITURE, MEATBALLS & LINGONBERRY JUICE AND GUYS I REALLY SUPPORT HOUSING INCLUSION BUT THIS IS JUST TOO MUCH. THEY SHOULD SHOP SOMEWHERE ELSE.
I just witnessed a truck run over a pedestrian in a crosswalk. I rendered emergency care while calling 911. His head was bleeding badly. He left in an ambulance.
He had fear in his eyes. He held my hand tightly.
Now I’m crying in my living room.
He was walking to a bus stop.
Nobody “groomed” to me to write another boy’s name in a ❤️ on my spelling test in 1st grade. What’s different today is visibility. Children are open about how they feel and who they are because many of us who survived the past refuse to be invisible. Be proud. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

My annual PSA on Halloween.
The power to keep kids in your neighborhood safe today rests with YOU!
Stay home and give kids candy.
Walk with kids in your area.
If you have to drive, slow the f*ck down and anticipate children.
Tonight is for them! 🎃🦇🧙🏽♀️👻
Urban heat islands contribute to climate change. The opportunity to engage in direct climate action by removing concrete in the urban core and replacing it with bioswale filtration and/or trees is one example of how cities can be part of the solution.
If you build a dense, livable community with infill housing for people of all incomes, prioritize safe active transit infrastructure, adopt policies that support working people and families, and integrate thoughtful open space, you can change your community for the better.
We submit our first draft Housing Element to
@California_HCD
for feedback and it's deemed in total compliance. And we're seeking a pro-housing designation with a plan to produce 150% of our RHNA obligation.
The state is not the problem. Your city is the problem.
Closing streets to cars is one of the best things a city can do but it often has a lot of opposition. Start with a single block. Reducing throughput improves the whole street, increases safety and the ⬆️ in ped activity will become your evidence for demand and doing more blocks.
I see this boy biking to school every day on the sidewalk of this street that many drivers speed down and I think about how I biked safely to school my whole life.
Decades of transportation policy and infrastructure design failures have harmed youth. We have a lot of work to do.
Why does the media keep questioning if these shooters acted alone when we all know that half the Senate and a majority of the Supreme Court are accomplices to each of these mass shootings?

23 years ago my mother told me I had spat in the eye of God and shamed our family when I came out as gay, before kicking me out.
Today my mother asked me to help her remove “Republican” from her voter registration.
Never accept hate; but do give people space to grow and change.
If you aren’t riding the 20 minute
@SFBayFerry
from Oakland to SF for $4.50, you are missing out. Ditch your car, skip the bridge toll, forget parking, leave traffic headaches behind, and bring your bike! Also— snacks!!
That feeling when you spend 3 years working with community, staff & industry to develop a first-in-the-world zero NOx emission regulation, preside over a 6-hour public hearing, successfully move its approval, and get to sign the historic order. The time for Climate Action is now.
I’m in the Sky Train at PHX SkyHarbor Airport and literally every single person except me got off at the parking garage. I got one more stop, baby! — 44th & Washington for METRO LIGHT RAIL. 🚋🚋 😎
I have an important PSA about driving on Halloween. More children pedestrians die on this holiday than any other day of the year. Slow the f*ck down.
#HappyHalloween
The best part about being an East Bay gay is that you can basically sit in a SF gay bar anonymously and enjoy basketball without anyone suspecting a thing.
Personally, I would have put a curb around this space and filled it with a couple trees and native plant species that attract birds and butterflies but then again I have been known to lack aptitude for the visionary, pro-parking concrete city aesthetic.
