Artist, Writer, Painter. Have written and drawn an awful lot of different comic book characters, but notably: Superman , Captain Marvel, Infinity Inc., WildStar
I had to search for this Superman painting, as I wanted to tweet it in honor of the passings of both Ned Beatty and recently, Richard Donner. Done in the late 1970’s.
I’m going to put this out there- don’t judge this film by box office. That has little to do with the quality of any film. See it, and have a good time in a dark theater. It’s not about Marvel versus DC, Snyderverse, or any fake controversy:) A fan’s perspective.
In the new
@ShazamMovie
, the Seven Deadly Enemies are represented in Shazam’s lair, similarly placed, as in my Power of Shazam graphic novel of 25 years ago!
Had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Grace Caroline Currey who memorably played Mary Marvel in the Shazam movies! If she doesn’t get another spin as that character,
@JamesGunn
I think I found your Wonder Woman!
Drew this last night, and like how it came out, with some reservations as usual. Based on a still I have from 1989 Batman film. I may eBay it, but maybe no one’s buying anything other than toilet paper right now?
Another Superman birthday tweet, but this time also celebrating Earth Day early, with my painted cover for a Superman Earth Day Special that is worth searching eBay for!
Just got comps of the Batman 1989 movie adaptation, and overall, looks great. The art scans look better than the color, and the likenesses have more subtlety. Not bad for 20$. In stores in November!
This pic is from 1993, at the Capitol distributors meeting promoting the Return of Superman! And I realized yesterday at Terrificon I wore the same shirt! 30 years:)
Saw the Zach Snyder extended version of Justice League on
@hbomax
, and I really liked it. So much better than the 2017 version in my opinion. Love the cast! There are toxic haters and also lovers of the Snyderverse, but really, folks, it’s a movie.
Here’s an example of my script and pencils from Superman 50, where Lois and Clark get engaged. I know there’s no
@cwsupermanlois
on tonight, though. But watch it when it’s back on!
Since I have many new followers, here’s a sketch cover I drew in 2016, with a Batman 89 theme, as the new comic comes out today from DC, continuing the adventures.
In honor of
#Supermanday
Here's a scan of the art I created for the cover of Adventures of Superman
#500
, done in guoache paints. Pa Kent's arm was done on a separate board, to facilitate the printing, but I cut it out and framed it with the main scene.
My old friend and collaborator Mike Machlan passed away recently, at the age of 73. We met in 1974, and shared a love of comic books, drawing, and artists such as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and Wally Wood. We co-created Infinity Inc with Roy Thomas, and worked on All Star Squadron…
This is the original black Superman costume, inspired by John Byrne’s Kryptonian designs, and done by me for the specific storyline that followed the return of Superman from Warworld and Exile, that ran into 1990.
I first met Superman creator Jerry Siegel at San Diego Comicon in 1985, and we traded letters for many years. This was at a dinner honoring Jerry and his wife Joanne during the filming of the pilot for Lois and Clark, in maybe 1993. It was gratifying to see them honored.
Thank you Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster , for the greatest character in comics! Here’s a cover I drew, when I was writing and drawing Superman, with my color guide for the color separators. Fun times.
I’ll have these 8 backer board sketches for sale at Cave Comics, $60 each, first come first served, at my signing Saturday 12-3 pm, in Newtown CT. Come on by!
Very sad to hear that Ramona Fradon has died, age 97. She was a wonderful artist, and her work on Aquaman, Metamorpho, Plastic Man, and countless others was a joy to behold. She was still taking commissions up to a month ago! This one is still one of my favorites. R.I.P.
@Joe_Quinones
They made big hardboard signs of my Adventures of Superman
#424
cover , as well as school notebooks with the image, and of course scrubbed my signature. They do that:(
I inked this commission over the great Carmine Infantino’s pencils for the late Marty Greim, in the early 1980’s. I knew Marty since the 1970’s, through fanzine projects.
Gifted
@ZacharyLevi
with a Power of Shazam hardcover, with a sketch done by me. Go see Zach at the New York Comic-Con through the weekend! He’s great with the fans!
the new Superman costume looks great, very “New 52” so congrats to Jim Lee who designed that! Liking the actor here, and they have the spitcurl on the correct side! And is anyone looking at what’s going on in the background? What is going on outside??
Hey all, just realized the Captain America book by Roy Thomas and me is in May Previews, so please pre-order a copy via your comic shop soon! Trust me, you’ll like this one!
@Marvel
This was a revised “likeness approval”done to get Jack Nicholson to sign off on for the comic adaptation of the Batman 1989 movie.
@MichaelKeaton
and Kim Bassinger had already approved their own.
For you comic history buffs, here’s the paperwork from 1991 when my Adventures of Superman story was bounced by the Comics Code Authority. Read the yellow sheet note for the reason. It’s amusing, because they called it right:)
In this months comic store solicitations, due this week, please consider ordering the Return of Superman 30th anniversary special, featuring all NEW material from your favorite creators! I wrote and drew a 12 page Eradicator story, as well as doing a pin-up for the book. Thanks
I drew this a few years ago, for a comic tied to the Arrow-verse television “Crisis on Infinite it’s Earths” crossover series. Fun to draw the TV counterpart characters. Enjoy! Made by hand:)
The one time I met Ramona Fradon, back in 2018, when we both were being interviewed for movie stuff in NYC. We talked about comic creator rights, and she was really sharp! Rest in peace.
Sunday art share- something I drew in 1978, drawing inspiration from EC Comics, as well as a Frank Frazetta Buck Rogers cover I had seen. Copyright by me.
Here’s a sketch I drew of Matrix, the sole survivor of the Byrne “pocket universe” conclusion. Matrix eventually became Supergirl, before and after the Death of Superman storyline. I had hoped she could become her own character at the time.
Here’s another page of Superman pencils, from when I was writing and drawing the book. I would loosely lay out 11 pages on the boards, script them, then get them back from the terrific letterer, and tighten up pencils for Dennis Janke to ink. Dennis did great on them too.
Celebrating 40 years since I started work at
@DCComics
, here’s the third or fourth ink job, from around September 1980, over Dave Cockrum pencils.
Thanks to all for their birthday wishes to me on my descent into old age:) I do appreciate the love! Thanks. Now enjoy some covers I drew back in the 1980’s!
For all you art fans out there, when a writer gives you a page with this much info to cover, it’s going to take me a few days to get it done. My last contribution to the current JSA comic. Degaton takes over the world.
