Amazing morning with the family and being presented with a MBE by Prince Charles for Dentistry and Oral Health. Massive thanks to my Dental family too. @ Buckingham Palace
Shout out to my
#dentalnurse
Lauren. She keeps my surgery running, sorts admin, puts patients first. She blocks all calls & messages that is not clinically related, pulls me out of virtual meetings on time & all done with a smile under that awful mask!
It was really good today to officially join the team at the Office of the Chief Dental Officer. Some important issues to work through whilst still completing some work for the NHS Midlands region until September.
Today I have booked all my patients in for Monday. Interesting most patients I spoke to were saying I am sure you have people more urgent than my case & would be happy to wait a bit longer if you need. How nice of them.
Have to admit not enjoyed a whole day in FFP3 masks & neither has my nurse Hannah. However we managed to deal with all the urgent cases on our list today. Overall successful outcome.
Full clincial day today and have to say felt the most “normal” since return for face to face treatment on 8th June. The patients who have come in have been brilliant & so appreciative

Having examined the evidence I believe that we now have enough evidence to have a strategy to mitigate risks with a Dental surgery setting. Declaration of interest I have whole day of virtual meeting & am missing clinical work very much.
To the
#Dentalfamily
week commencing 8th July I will be curating the NHS England twitter handle @ NHS/
This handle is curated by different person each week. I do also have a full working week so will need your help to chat all things Dental & Oral health
In working with Dental teams daily there is significant evidence that WhatsApp groups & social media in general is a detriment to the Well Being of many team members. Pleas take care of others. Yes I realise the irony that I am posting this on Twitter.
Reopening

practice this week. We are running 4 or 5 surgeries out of 12 however we will by end of next week have addressed all urgent cases. Balancing this with LDN work has been a challenge but return to clinical work & the team has been brilliant.
Out of office is on. First trip back to Malaysia for over 3 years. Heathrow was chaotic to say the least and a 13 hour flight with a mask on to come. Spirits of the family still high though…….
Today is our 24th wedding anniversary. Last minute arrangements to celebrate as we are both isolating having expected not to be here. Interflora did it’s thing 🙏. I cooked a Paella 🥘 yes recognise that’s a large portion for the two of us 😬
I have my first vaccination session scheduled for 7am tomorrow morning at the Newark showground. Looking forward to it but right now thinking about what time to wake up and how to resist temptation to say open wide
All ready for Saturday surgery which may genuinely become the new normal for me. Today’s surgical hat challenge in response to
@samistagnell
For clarity they are not required but does keep unruly hair in check
End of a long clinical day. Reflection is that clinical work is feeling more normal as time progress but practice ownership just seems to get more difficult.
Happy 22nd wedding Anniversary to
@Mandywong606
. Our initial plans of weekend away to celebrate in tatters but even though this is strangest anniversary ever still hope to celebrate later
I am so pleased to have been awarded the MBE. It was so unexpected & as yet not sure who was responsible for the citation. Would be great if they could let me know! This is a recognition of the work of the Networks that I am privileged to be a part of
Nice to receive this from This from one of our Dental laboratories who does our NHS work.
"We are so grateful for all the work you are sending us. You are keeping us going and we appreciate every single job"
Brilliant to hear about the number of Dental practices willing to provide urgent Dental care to the population of
#Leicester
Valuable contribution to healthcare provision for the patients in the area.
Sad to find myself at Heathrow at end of long day flying to Malaysia for a funeral. We lost my mum earlier this week. A tricky week rearranging & cancelling plans for the next few days but there is never a good time for this. Back in UK on Sunday.
Currently Friday is clinical day. Looks like will be a hot one for the second week in a row. I know it is not good for Oral health but have already given instructions for our PM to buy ice cream for everyone at lunch time!
After announcement last week we are busy preparing the practice. Have meetings re restoration & recovery. Tonight will be where I will be standing down as secretary for Lincolnshire LDC after 16 years. Been on the cards for some time but today's the day!
For Leicester colleagues.
@NHSMidlands
@ivanbrowneLCC
has confirmed that health providers (primary care) to continue with current level of provision unless directed otherwise. Dental practices should NOT be reverting to AAA & remote triaging at this time
Just reading this "for any medical concerns, reasons, appointments and emergencies" assume means primary care Dental practices to continue. I will look to confirm but it won't be via Facebook!
Ready for a socially distanced dinner for 4. Looking forward to catching up with Colin Campbell & his better half. Unlikely to avoid conversations re Dentistry whenever we meet up but will try. Some manecing clouds above!
Amazing to hear that 54 Dental family members (for clarity not just Dentists) helping in vaccination centres across Nottinghamshire currently including last nights 8pm-3am slot. I congratulate the whole NHS in Nottinghamshire for your efforts
It would seem just in time our reception screen
@maltingsdental
is in and ready. There is real excitement in the team already and today we will preparing
Big thanks to
@bgmain1
for showing us around today celebrating the new
@BristolUni
dental school building. What an amazing facility for the students of today and tomorrow. Wishing you all the best for the future.
Full clinical day. Hottest day of year so far & spent my lunch hour carrying out a surgical extraction to help a colleague’s patient. Full clinical day tomorrow to look forward to but hopefully cooler & no emergency surgical
Opinions are split on this but some in the family feel this as part of my Christmas present from my dental nurse is somewhat passive aggressive 😜. Any thoughts?
Be aware that there are vulnerable people out there that you can help. Our team shopped for a lady who had been living on baked beans for a week also as we postponed an appointment we found a patient that was isolated & unable to get supplies for themselves
End of an era. LDC secretary for

.Over 40 people attended AGM tonight. Biggest attendance for many years probably more than the last 10 years put together. Thanks to

@ShawnC_GDPC
for support & I am sure

will do a great job
The
@maltingsdental
team has been amazing this week. Well ahead of schedule for

plan. Anyone who contacted us with an issue has been offered appointments & we have completed all "non AGP" urgent treatments. 8.30am Monday we start AGPs
A conversation today with our decontamination nurse at the practice who is from Ukraine & has all her family still there and it certainly put into perspective what I considered to be a problem and what is really not so much of a problem.
Your NHS dentistry and oral health update including the announcement of the incoming deputy CDO
@RebeccaVHarris
Very much looking forward to working with you
Shout out to my associate Claire who after the staff took decision to book two extra sit and wait "emergencies" into the diary this morning even though only two of us in before I had even had time to see either she had taken & treated both.
Today the practice sees our first patients in a while as a specialist Oral Surgery Urgent Dental care service to assist UDCs & take cases that would have otherwise gone to hospital. I sense some enthusiasm from our practice team today
#DentalFamily
Very proud of our practice team in particular our two nurses Hannah and LJ yesterday delivering supplies to vulnerable people on request of the district council

& the Dentist’s 🦷 role in delivering prevention. Importance of involvement of the whole dental family. What is concerning is none of them knew any of it😳😬
Looking at evidence base for our current cross infection practice & PPE I’m Dental practice & it seems current practice holding up relatively well. Some mitigation of risks in the Dental surgery also seems possible & promising.
Congratulations to Dr Maxwell Christopher Graham Manley (head of department royal hospital for neuro-disability) MBE for services to Dentistry and Mrs Maria Sanchez (Dental nurse at Whittington health NHS trust) BEM for services to Dental care

After early morning call clinical all day today. New hat has arrived thanks for recommendation

Clinical day and also had a virtual meeting with my fellow LDN Chairs in the region. Day was brightened up by
@StraumannMel
from
@StraumannUK
delivering this amazing cake. Needless to say
@maltingsdental
team stepped up and this was gone within 2 hours
The Dental hygienist and Dental Therapist consultation regarding amendment to the Human Medicines regulation. Change will support dental hygienists & dental therapists in providing the right care to patients without unnecessary delays
Good Mental Health Awareness week at the practice. Our team work hard to deliver high quality care. We appreciate all that they do so we asked a beauty therapist to come in & turned our meeting room into a spa. The team took it in turns & absolutely loved it.
I have heard that there is no change to the infection prevention control guidance for Dental teams. The mode of transmission remains the same as does the published guidance.
Preparation for tomorrow's juggling act. We have a
@maltingsdental
staff training from 8.30am. We will see first patients by around 10.30am. In between treating patients have some meetings & an interview with BBC radio. Feels like life returning to normal 😂
Well done to our Dental nurses Olga and Stacey taking lots of donations from our practice to the Ukraine donation drop off centre. Needed their little helper with all that to carry.
Congratulations to the national and regional Dental fellows on your graduation. Realise we were missing some colleagues yesterday especially
@amaranthafw
Thanks for the photo
@drnish35
In Norfolk today with 10 young dentists. Raising flaps doing surgical extractions & suturing. My teaching commitments have reduced from over 30 days to 3-5 days a year. Probably a good thing since when I told them that I qualified in 1995 one of them told me she wasn’t born then
Very good to hear the Medical Director of
@NHSMidlands
mention in the Medical Directorate staff briefing today about Dentists making a contribution in the fight against Covid 19 outbreak
Big thanks to
@HEEMDentalDean
joining in discussions re transferable skills & potential re deployment of Dental teams. Also thanks to
@w8charlotte
@Bocus_Focus
for sharing transferable skills a& doing preparatory work. We will continue to work on this
Great to see Jyoti get recognition for her work. Winning the dental therapist of the year in the 2023 probe dental awards and she will be speaking at the BADT conference next month. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with her for almost 2 years now
Happy

Thank you to all of the amazing dental nurses for all that you do. I know I couldn’t function without these two ruling my life!
My last fortnight as a LDN Chair in
@NHSMidlands
Emotional to say goodbye to the Oral Health Promotion partnership board
@Leicester_News
& stand down as Vice Chair. Has been a big part of my working life. I wish everyone well & hope to keep a link.
What a positive end to a really challenging day. So many colleagues volunteering. Positive attitude from the LDCs of the East Midlands for mobilising Local Urgent Dental care system.
Always pleased to get request from politicians to talk about Oral health. Even better to get a request to speak about Oral health & discuss feasibility study for water fluoridation.
Amazing to be back
@unibirmingham
great hall to celebrate the “retirement” of Prof Iain Chapple who is a giant in the world of dentistry. One of the most intelligent & hardest working people that I know. The dental family owe him a debt of gratitude
