My 15 year old son has learned more about “team basketball” in 3 weeks in a 40+ pick up run, than he has in any town/AAU program. Parents, stop writing checks for fancy uniforms…ask your local old baller to work out your kid. They won’t say no.

Currently watching the worst HS Boys AAU game in the history of the sport,at least a 1000 turnovers, boys launching 40 footers..not even coming close, both teams in zone, 68 fouls so far, 18 jump balls, 6 back court calls...6!!!!!! Uniforms are sick though.

Need more women coaches in girls youth basketball. It’s a terrible disservice to young girls who are coached by “Dad the insurance underwriter” (who never played), while mom (who played in college ) is a bleacher cheerleader. Women, where the hell are you?

21 years ago, on the first day of March Madness, my playing days ended thanks to Tayshaun Prince dropping 27 on my head. I learned two things that day. 1. NBA guys are different 2. I didn’t get enough shots I hope Tayshaun has a terrible day today.

Here in SC, HS hoop teams can practice as a team (With coaches) as well as play surrounding towns with refs/scoreboards/ etc. Completely normal and legal…and get this Massachusetts, the world did not end!!! AMAZING!

So last night 1 ref was late to the 9pm game, he was also high. This morning both refs were 30 mins late to daughters 8am game. 10 mins into THAT game they kicked a coach out, and gave 2 bench techs. AAU absolutely sucks, starting to debate on pulling my youngest.

Best drill a coach every made me do, throw the ball out with a back spin, jump stop catch, into a triple threat...for 45 mins (everyday, for a year). That’s it. Boring as hell, hated it. It changed my game. No gimmicks, no elastic bands, no swinging medicine balls...no BS.

Refs officiate both the V Boys and Girls games. To say there is a glaring/obvious difference is an understatement. Girls are T’d up for no reason, immediately called for fouls for showing aggression, and if I hear one more “settle down honey” we are going to have a situation.

Saw a highschool team play last night where the ball barely touched floor, entire shot clock was used, everyone cutting hard, almost zero turnovers, kids constantly talking, and not ONE eye roll when a kid was subbed for. Classic Bob Crook Braintree Basketball.

In my experience D3 hoop players are TOUGHER on average than most D1 guys. They love the game more, and can straight BALL. If you disrespect a D3 team, they will gift wrap you an “L”.

Son put a team together with his buddies and played in a local AAU tourney. 2-0 vs teams they routinely lose to with their AAU programs. Imagine spending 2k for your kid, only to have captain dipshit and his buddies steam roll him, in uniforms they made in my kitchen. AAU=Joke

This Mstate/ Kstate game is perfect…I couldn’t be happier. These kids are so good, these coaches are incredible, compete levels are 10+, an abundance of NBA athleticism, and zero hero ball..I could watch this for 13 hours straight.

18 years ago this week Kentucky ended my playing career in the first round of the dance, actually Tayshaun Prince did...you think you can play until you go against a 14 year NBA veteran. Pro’s are just different..average fan has no idea.

If you’re shooting around before a pick up game (specifically younger players), and rebound a miss, and don’t immediately give the ball back for the routine “layup”, just know....everyone hates you.

Basketball is the best. The athleticism, insane shots, deep 3’s, out of this world dunks….but if you don’t box out and rebound, defend and sprint the floor, win 50/50 balls…you will lose. That never changes.

It’s shocking how many HS teams spend zero time on defense. The basic, and most elementary defensive concepts are no where to be found. Scoring is fun, but I’m much more of a fan of winning.

I am so sick and tired of watching teams run a pick and roll/man offense verse a zone. Against 2/3 play a 1/3/1, against a 1/3/1 play a 2-1-2, attack the gaps, move the ball…THATS IT…nothing more..this isn’t rocket science. IT’S MADDENING.

Coach never missed a day of school as a student/teacher until March 15th, 2001. That day he went to watch me and @nicolasdunn play in the NCAA tourney. I believe this is his second missed day, watching @NickJTimberlake play at @KUHoops . Coach Bob Crook changed our lives.
