The names of the 39 people who died in the back of a lorry in Essex a few weeks ago have been released. 39 people who were loved and will be missed by family and friends. They are more than a number. We remember them here:
Pham Thi Tra My, aged 26
Nguyen Dinh Lurong, aged 20
🚨🚨UPDATE: Two more people have been taken off the flight because of an injunction made by the European Court of Human Rights.
It shouldn't take a European Court to tell the UK government a simple fact: it's morally repugnant to trade human beings for cash.
🚨Suella Braverman has called people seeking safety here an 'invasion' on the South Coast.
One day after a far-right firebomb attack on an asylum centre. Heinous.
We cannot allow Braverman's dehumanising language + decision-making to continue. She's putting lives at risk.

🎉SUCCESS: we challenged the Home Office's attempted removal of our client to Rwanda and we won!
Another sign that we can beat this govt's cruel anti-refugee agenda. Every action counts - and the more of us who come together demanding solidarity & welcome, the better!
This account is absolutely devastating. Despite calls for help, UK and French authorities *refused* to rescue people. At least 27 people needlessly lost their lives as a result.
Our governments both have blood on their hands.

The UK routinely turns down applications for refugee status from those who fled for their lives.
In the last 3 months of 2020, the Home Office rejected over 50% of Afghan applicants.
And government's new anti-refugee bill is set to make this situation even worse...
Resettling 5,000 Afghans this year is woefully inadequate. We & 90 others are urging the Gov't to:
🟢scrap the 'resettlement-only' plan that criminalises refugees
🟢grant refugee status now to Afghans in the UK
🟢reunite families
🟢expand the resettlement plan

Priti Patel's latest asylum plans will push more people into dangerous journeys. Many fleeing persecution will be totally left out of resettlement routes.

. It’s absolutely right to call government’s rhetoric out for what it is.
We should never forget history, we should never forget the origins of our refugee protections. When a government completely loses sign of humanity, it is a dangerous sign.
🚨BREAKING: As of 4pm today, this government have drastically narrowed the *only* safe route Afghans had to the UK.
They've quietly changed the ARAP scheme so that it's much harder for Afghans who worked with & for the British to seek protection here.
🚨BREAKING: This government has boasted about its Afghan Resettlement Scheme for months. We knew it wasn’t moving quickly enough to bring people to safety.
But we didn’t know HOW slowly it was moving.
Just 4 people have been resettled through it. 4!
This is HUGE!!
WELCOME, Prime Minister, to the movement to scrap

NRPF rules that force thousands of people - including over 100,000 children - into poverty & make them unable to access state support in this time of crisis! We'll be following up 😊
One family. ONE family have been resettled since this govt promised Afghans 'a warm welcome' almost half a year ago.
Meanwhile this government loves to pretend refugees have lots of 'safe and legal routes' at their disposal. It's a complete fiction.
The Government is carrying out its despicable plan to deport refugees to Rwanda.
This scheme is an abomination. Racist, barbaric and morally bankrupt.
If you believe Britain should be welcoming refugees, not deporting them, speak out now.
Here are some tools to help 🧵
Syrians. It's 15 Syrians who have been served with a removal notice that they'll be sent away to Rwanda on 14 June.

It has *chosen* not to. It's chosen to shut safe routes. It's chosen to not resettle Afghan families.
It's chosen to manufacture a crisis for people looking to rebuild lives here.

This is horrifying. These are the same key workers that kept us going during lockdown, who we all clapped for (including govt!). Now they're facing arrest & removal.

2 were seized for no insurance
3 riders reported for offences
2 x arrests for immigration offences
Imagine making a treacherous journey to escape devastation at home, only to face a violent far-right mob in the UK.
Imagine the UK’s Home Secretary then suggest that *you* carry some of the blame for the vicious attacks against you.

The UK Government:

❌ gives huge fines to airlines, ferries etc that bring refugees to the UK.
Also the UK Government: Why are people coming by boat?!

The UN body has warned that the new Bill will lead to further discrimination, abuse and exploitation of migrants and refugees.

Black public figures call on airlines to refuse to deport people to Jamaica & other Commonwealth countries, while the Windrush generations are still so far from seeing justice.
Our take on the new anti-refugee bill, a 🧵:

No Recourse To Public Funds is a public health issue.
It denies people a safety net, forcing them into dangerous work or destitution.
It applies to 1.4m people with visas + those without. The PM knows that.
This is a deliberate choice. Anti-migrant dogma over public health.
At the Liaison Committee just now, Boris Johnson claimed that the ‘no recourse to public funds’ rule is for people “who are here illegally or unlawfully”. That’s completely wrong. It’s imposed on migrants’ visas.

This is absolutely horrifying. Seasonal workers from Barbados say they were used as 'slave labour' on UK farms. Reports of £6 for a day's work.

This is a cruel and dangerous Bill that could see refugees - including vulnerable Afghans - criminalised based on their method of flight.
We must oppose it at every turn.
More defeats of the government's Borders Bill in the House of Lords last night!🙌🏽 There were 8 defeats in total including a vote against asylum system offshoring and the criminalisation of people seeking safety here via irregular routes.
This child's death is absolutely heartbreaking, and was utterly avoidable.
Govt could have prevented tragedies like this by introducing safe routes to the UK.
