poets, litmags, friends in the writing community, please read & share this article asap 🖤🇵🇸 “Above all, Craft is what keeps us polite while the boot is on our neck or on somebody else’s. And we cannot afford that, not now and not going forward…”

ew no, NO! it’s supposed to be more of ‘trauma is not your fault, but accountability for your actions as an adult and how you do or don’t pass that trauma on to others is your responsibility.’ Healing from trauma is deeply complex, supportive community plays a major role in that.
@NYTvows
i’ve never stopped thinking about that Sex and the City episode where Carrie says “f it”, registers entirely for herself, and then calls everyone out for this very thing. 👆
explained to my 4yo that getting a publication acceptance is the adult equivalent of someone hanging your artwork up on the refrigerator and then her eyes lit up as much as mine.
ok but WHAT IF we treated indie lit the same way we treated the early 2000s indie band scene and we fangirled the hell out of each other and threw random shows in church basements and backyards and just fcking obsessed about each other and drowned in the moments and emotion and…
litmags, we need a serious conversation around excluding previously published work, especially on blogs & socials. I doubt there has ever been a time a potential reader was like “no, I’ll pass. I read this on Carol’s blog five years ago.”
It’s too quiet in my house so I have to scream it here—I’ve just received two print journal acceptances, including my first paid publication 🥺😩 what is this feeling?? What do you all do with it???
@jmurffff
We had a town-wide 5k family fun run this past weekend and my 6yo stood firm in saying that it’s weird to have to pay to “do all that work.” I tried explaining how they do fundraising, and her response was still “ok… why don’t we just give them the money and *not* do that.”
@pot8um
100%. Also, when my toddler was going through a hitting phase I was able to consistently reinforce using her words instead. Being able to say “what does mommy do” made that resonate. Hitting kids when angry and telling them not to hit when angry creates a serious dissonance.
@dilemmalord
does anyone remember around that time constantly hearing about the “supermodel diet” of sugarfree gum and diet coke? because that felt intentionally ~everywhere~
Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art. Keep making your art.
so it took me too many decades to realize this, but if ur someone who’s tired all day until nighttime, then instead of doing the logical thing of sleeping (bc u were exhausted all day) u get a “second wind”—it might not be rooted in fatigue, it might be rooted in overstimulation.
@latkedelrey
we’ve just been constantly sick since… wait… oh, since we got Covid in august. also if one more person tells me about immune systems being “out of practice” bc of lockdown istg…
@PortiaNoir
It’s so clear how many people view their kids as objects or extensions of themselves and not individual humans deserving of respect. We don’t let family members post images of our kids either, always with the question “who is this serving?”
A giant hawk dropped a massive fish on my front lawn that I tried to save by putting in a wheelbarrow full of water before it went belly up, and I can’t tell if this is an omen, an offering, or the start of a poem…
@adrierising
those things that you think are small that give you joy ARE NOT SMALL. Make room for these “little pleasures” bc that’s seriously what will keep you going. Write and tend to your plants, and for fcks sake, when you are tired—SLEEP.
@pigletish
I’ve always held that it is rude to be super early when you’re showing up at someone’s house or personal event unless you’re an *extremely* close friend/family who is genuinely prepared to help put food out or something while I get ready. 🤷🏻♀️
@DojaCat
most of u in the comments are mad bc you’ve been in love with your own *projection* of Doja—an image you created for some reason/need. when an artist is being a whole-ass person disrupting what ur projecting/expecting, it turns a mirror back to you—insecure ppl can’t handle that.
@pot8um
I was talking with my 6yo the other day and let her know I had the same meltdowns over the seam in my socks, fabrics, foods, more. She asked me why I don’t anymore, and I told her that I now buy my own things, so maybe she can make more choices too. Mostly, that she’s not alone.
@AndyEyeballs
there’s a Berenstain Bears book where the adults all try to freak each other out, ending with saying “ghosts aren’t real, but it’s fun to be scared of them anyway” and then mama papa and some lady all give each other side-eye so I think maybe they’re talking about the same thing.
something for fellow litmags to consider: 1. simultaneous subs should always be a thing. why are we upholding that an editor’s time is more important than your art?
@mcrane_12
I recently found my old frog and toad books, and saw that my seven year old self literally bookmarked and dog eared this page. Pivotal
moment. Life goals ever since.
“Karen” is a racial slur. If I derisively referred to random black women I find annoying as “Shaniqua” or whatever everyone would consider it racist. The Karen slur is used to dismiss and degrade white women. That’s the whole point.
The fact that a gracious rejection letter can at times feel better than some acceptances just validates that it’s *not* so much about getting published as it is about human connection sparking through shared art, being validated and truly seen, and the community around this all.

ABA was created with the dangerous ideology that autistic ppl didn’t have souls and it was the work to “build a person.” it seeks to control & modify one’s behaviors at any cost, with the goal of conformity—all with total disregard for the individual’s humanity & selfhood.

I witnessed this with one of my succulent/cactus plants. She grew the biggest, most gorgeous flower, signaling her time had come.
kinda wild to be living in a time where I can roll over to change my phone’s alarm settings and stumble into a conversation btwn

WOW so as a psychotherapist myself I have had a lot of concerns about what she shares and some of her information just seems heavily tainted. It appears on my timeline a lot, and I have replied to some of her stuff disputing it. What a confirmation…
@toxicologist12
Psych prof & therapist here to validate that hearing voices is not something that qualifies for *any* diagnosis unless accompanied by clinically significant distress in 2 or more areas of life. Also a lot of ADHD ppl experience this to varying degrees, and in some traditions (1/2
writing friends, how do you get a foot in the door with editorial pieces for magazines, journals, etc.? All freelancing jobs seem to require sample work from other freelancing jobs that require samples. All leads/advice are appreciated ✨✍️

call makes me think we should create a small chaotic litmag solely for lit twitter collabs with very specific and awkward prompts forcing us to work together and grow closer here, maybe call it ICEBREAKERS or…

literally how im teaching history of psychology. ‘…and that trip Freud and Jung were totally inseparable, talking the entire time about their dreams <smirk> you should *seriously* read their letters to each other.’
@GovMurphy
I know he got pressure for this... this is so unfortunate. There’s a mountain of reasons to stay pro-mask, and the only anti-mask one is “nahh, I don’t wanna.” I really hope there’s protections for when ppl start harassing employees for mask mandates. 🤦🏻♀️
@sonyashea3
this entire twitter thread feels weird to me and it’s giving insecure 7th grade mean-girls. good for her for racking up that follow count with *literally whatever she wants* everyone in the comments should stop gossiping and maybe… go write? post on IG? anything other than this
physical + mental fatigue is a common outcome of overstimulation and a subsequently overtaxed nervous system. it’s not just some second wind or not wanting to sleep, it’s that when the world is silent and everything has calmed, ur body doesn’t have to work as hard. which is nice.

seems a good day to share that

coined the phrase ‘Neuroqueer’ and her book is a beautiful, inclusive, empowering must-read on the neurodiversity paradigm and vision for a better future, together.💗
My literary hero wrote the most beautiful blurb for my book and I have since melted into a puddle, slid down through the cracks in my wooden floorboards, and exist somewhere now in the spaces between concrete foundation bubbles where I will remain forever smiling.

idk, I’ve had a wedding and 2x baby showers and I still think it’s all bullshit. we should do a registry and party when we move into an apartment, or hit like 35. literally everyone… “sweet 35” parties all around.
@mattxiv
the whole thing is so disturbing. every inch of that was intentional. as an art therapist, even seeing the drawings on the walls… so effed up. the comments sections are horrendous rn, I can’t help but wonder if it was purposeful in fueling conspiracies and hateful narratives.
wait. I’m about 3 years too late in asking this—but when journals request a cover letter, they are talking about writing a few sentences in an email, right? not like a formal, separate cover letter… right? 😬
Last night I wrote and read a poem for my daughter’s bday, after which she jumped on me and said “mommy I’m serious—I accept this for publication” so I’m now totally good for all of 2022.
@a_h_reaume
“Also if you wear a cup, do NOT follow the leftist directions or use the enclosed bottle to rinse. Make sure to walk out with everything dripping everywhere, make direct intimate eye contact with all the other women, then empty the entire thing into the most central public sink.”
If it’s not rights, then it’s ownership and control. I feel like we all need to take a serious look at archaic purity values and question WHY you need to be their first <Looking sternly at you, presses open only to writers who have not yet published a collection> tbh it’s gross.
My god this issue is gorgeous. Thank you
@OlneyMagazine
for believing in my words. This piece means a lot to me and I’m honored to have it surrounded by such beauty, inside and out. I can’t stop hugging it.
hey so.. I’ve been working with the
muses on a literary journal the past few seasons and it’s not perfect but it’s raw and beautiful and—seems it’s almost time to unveil and open for submissions 🖤 more later tonight? More later tonight..
