Learning to read is not intuitive. People don't just wake up and "know" that the letter C can make different sounds depending on which vowel it precedes. They have to be told that it does and when it happens. This is direct instruction, which everyone needs.

Orthographic mapping is a mental process used to store and remember words. It is not a skill, teaching technique, or activity you can do with students but a process that is enabled when phonemic awareness and phonics skills are taught.

When the vowels i and o in one-syllable words are followed by -ld, -nd, -lt, and -st, they may make the long vowel sound. (ex: gold, kind) Teach students this sentence as a memory aid: "The kind old man led the wild colt to his post."

Wondering where the terms “uppercase” and “lowercase” letters comes from? We can thank the printing press for that! Letters were stored by type in wooden cases- with capital letters being kept in the upper cases and while minuscule were in the lower compartments.

To apply decoding strategies, students must use their knowledge of individual phoneme/grapheme relationships including identification of vowels and consonants. But before they can use them, they have to be taught them. Direct instruction is so important for this reason.
