High Sierra, a key film in Humphrey Bogart’s career, was released on this day in 1941. Bogart’s turn as “Mad Dog” Roy Earle both marks his transition from supporting actor to leading man and represents his first professional collaboration with John Huston.
However, perhaps the number one reason that Humphrey Bogart is so fondly remembered by so many is that he always stood up for the underdog, spoke up for truth and justice, hated phonies, and simply did what was right.

This is an objectively awful take. Now, you don’t have to love Bogart. Or love each of his films. But to say that the man who starred in films ranging from Casablanca to The African Queen to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre to The Caine Mutiny is overrated is just plain silly.
Frank Sinatra was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, on this day in 1915. Of Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart said: “Sinatra’s idea of paradise is a place where there are plenty of women and no newspapermen. He doesn’t know it, but he’d be better off if it were the other way around.”
