Senior writer,
@ESPN
. NYT best-selling author of Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks. Chicago native. Michigan alum.
Some of y’all are kinda odd, IMO, for being so shocked they stopped the game when this is *literally* the only reason you’re watching this random Tuesday night game between 12th and 13th place teams
Giannis just said he easily could have joined a superteam, done his part w other stars and won that way. Says "that's the easy way." Then pounds table and says this was the hard way.
Didn’t want to wait another year—another moment—to ask you to spend the rest of your life with me. I didn’t need, or even want, more time. You’re the biggest blessing, and I’m so grateful to be taking this step with you.
Some personal news: Moving over to Sports Illustrated to work as a senior writer this coming week. Feel incredibly fortunate to join their deepening roster, and humbled to write for an outlet I spent so much time reading as a kid.
Diddy really put a video online saying he wanted to buy the Panthers. In 1 minute he:
1) Got the name of the team wrong
2)Said he'd bring in Kaep to compete for a starting job, despite already having a franchise QB
3) Suggested the halftime show would be the org's No. 2 priority
Jen Hale: "What's your favorite dish? What are you looking forward to eating the most?"
Zion Williamson: "You're trying to set me up. No matter what answer I give, social media going to clown me. So no comment."
The Sopranos is an unbelievable show. But my man Tony was so racist that he looked at a package of Uncle Ben's Rice and passed out, lmaooo. I think abt this a lot.
People talk a little bit too broadly about the athletes' social movements. The WNBA players have generally been really far ahead of the curve, and beyond that, extremely organized. I don't think there's any question they helped propel Warnock in his race for the Senate
The Warriors winning another title with KD kind of feels like the really rich girl who wins the golden ticket in Willy Wonka after her dad hired thousands of workers to open a trillion chocolate bars to find it. An embarrassment of riches.
Still kind of stunned by what we just saw a few mins ago. A guy re-injured himself after 10-15 mins of playing for the first time in a month. And so many folks really doubted whether he was just being soft for not playing. I hate hot-take culture, man. Hope he's good.
And for Knicks fans:
Spike Lee confirmed to me he’s working on a film series based on “Blood in the Garden,” a book about the 90s Knicks.
“It’s not a rumor.”
So Trump finally went at LeBron, huh? Shocked it took this long. Not shocked it happened during a week where LeBron literally opened a school for at-risk kids.
My mind keeps going back to Tuesday night, when the president, at a presidential debate, made fun of how often his opponent wears masks as a precaution during a pandemic.
Excited to share some news. In the process of writing my first book for
@simonschuster
. The tentative title: Blood on the Hardwood: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks.
We’re still less than a month into the NBA season. So far we’ve had:
*Butler saga/trade
*Fight in Bron’s 1st home gm
*Kyrie chucking a ball in stands bc he was mad at JMurray
*Four 50-pt games
*Magic having stern talk w Walton
*Melo/Rox at crossroads 10 gms in
*KD/Draymond drama
You guys are incredible. Just got word that Blood in the Garden made the NYT bestseller list this week. Am SO grateful for all of you, who went to go buy this thing. Will never, ever forget the support. Thank you.
Have some professional news to share: I'm officially back at
@ESPN
as a senior writer to cover the NBA. Got to write so many fun, deep-dive stories here before, and am hyped to have the opportunity to do it again.
The Bucks have been more vocal about police violence and racial profiling than the rest of the league for years. To decide not to play today would add to that distinction.
It's hard to put into words how incredibly sad it is that we saw video of the Laquan McDonald shooting -- 16 shots -- and still had to hold our breath about whether the officer would be found guilty in the case. Thank God he was.
Kevin Harlan’s ability to make a game between two sub-.500 teams sound like a Game 7 is amazing. Especially bc this has been an awesome game. Love that dude.
One of the bigger changes I'd like to see take place in this country is elementary/middle school curriculums. Fact that an enormous part of our country is just waking up to what Juneteenth/Tulsa Race massacre are sheds light on how these things aren't even mentioned in classrooms
The best acquisition you can make as we start free agency: My book, Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks, for
@atriabooks
, is now available for presale. Out on January 18. Can buy it here, with all major online retailers.
Said goodbye to my little old lady, Snowy, a little while ago. She lived 18 fantastic years. Will miss her, but shared so many great moments w her. She loved everyone she came in contact with.
My brain is so broken from today, but my heart is so full. Legitimately have tears in my eyes. Can't even RT everyone who's posting copies of the book, there are so many. I've never had a feeling like this in my life, but just know how deeply I appreciate you all.
@ProfessaJay
This is all so infuriating. And all the more sad, bc I know we grew up in the same area, and ppl try all the time to say how much of a utopia we lived in. It was bad, too. Smfh.
Knick fans aren’t supposed to be that loud w 2,000 people in the seats. It’s gonna be a madhouse when it’s closer to the real thing if they’re still playing this decently
This stadium = LA's version of the Sears Tower in Chicago. In other words: "Y'all can change the name to whatever you want, but I'm still calling it by its original name; thanks."
Staples Center – the iconic home of the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers among others since 1999 – will have a new name beginning Dec. 25: Arena. It’s believed to be the largest U.S. venue naming rights deal to date.
I don’t care if Mitchell’s playing or not. Or about a long layoff. Or Memphis’s talent and grit. As a No. 1 seed, you’ve got no business trailing by damn-near 20 in G1 with homecourt advantage against a relatively young team in the first round
It's always been treated as this endearing quality to not know how to pronounce these guys' names (literal MVP winners), or not know what countries they're from (MVP candidates), or not know which teams they play for. ... It's really not that funny, tho.
The Chicago Sky are wearing Vote Warnock t-shirts as they play the Atlanta Dream. Warnock is ome of the Democrats running against Kelly Loeffler, the Republican Senator who is an owner of the Dream
Interesting comment. Paul George finished 33% of his total plays using the pick-and-roll, which was a career-high. The prior high was 25% in OKC, via
@SynergySST
stats. That’s very different from a Ray Allen or JJ Redick style role.
I think the avg person looks at his baseball pursuit as a failure without realizing how insanely difficult it would be to get as decent/competent as he got at another pro sport. Particularly at that age.
April 7, 1994: Michael Jordan goes 2-5 with a double and two RBIs for the White Sox in an exhibition game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Harry Caray on the call.
OK, we've officially reached the stage where if you made a joke about all the Knicks' forwards last free agency, you now have to make one about the Pistons' centers
For anyone who’s had a scare with the virus, or has lost someone close to them because of it, I can’t even imagine what this must feel like. To not have it taken seriously, even now
