Dolly having her first ringworm treatment bath. The water is warm and I tip the bowl so that she can keep her head free, so feels safe. The medication has a soothing effect on her poor itchy skin and needs to stay on, and air dry, so her clean bed is gently warmed.

Dear baby Jennings is the sweetest little boy. He's been so dreadfully ill, so near death, yet is so grateful to be free from pain and hunger now that he doesn't make a fuss. His pen is always tidy, and he accepts even the injections that sting, so patiently.

I've cried so many nights over darling Maple, and yesterday for the first time she gained weight. She's so much better and this morning I was so happy to see a half empty food dish I cried again. Maple was all, "What's the fuss about? Ain'tcha ever seen a hog eat before?" 😊

The hedgehogs we are seeing appearing all over the country now are the boys - the girls will be getting up next month. This is a crucial time for the males to build up their strength and health, and the weight they lost during hibernation, ready for the rigours of mating. So…

Although she looks a little worried here (just before her injections) dear baby Ersa is recovering beautifully. Her eyes, once puffy from malnutrition, are bright and alive, and she's more than doubled in weight in the 2 weeks she's been here, so is looking more rounded. Ersa has…

Dear little Woody, the bald hedgehog, has been here 2 weeks now. Besides being treated for lungworm, he has been undergoing intensive treatment for his skin. Each day he is either: bathed in Imaverol (an antifungal medication to kill the ringworm) sprayed with Vetericyn (an…

A hedgehog out in the day is seriously ill and needs 𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 treatment from a rescue (not a vet). They've become hypothermic so are seeking warmth and are often seen on roads, car parks, paving and paths as these surfaces hold the the sun's heat longer than soil or grass.

A little update on dear baby Figgy. What a transformation from the dying little flybown waif of 3 weeks ago. (sorry I'm tired and emotional - and I don't mean drunk!🥲) #FridayFeeling

There's a very cruel and harmful lie doing the social media rounds that feeding hedgehogs stops them hibernating. Absolute nonsense! Whoever started this clearly has never worked in a rescue where, this time of year, we struggle to keep hedgehogs from hibernating before they…

If the milder weather inspires you to go out and 'tidy up' the garden - please don't. Use that energy to go out and litter pick your local area instead. We have become a nation so warped by TV's garden makeover propaganda, and our need for some control in our lives, that we now

While I was still giving first aid to baby Cider, an emergency arrived. Found out on the lawn cold and collapsed, this poor baby is starved and barely alive. I've given little Rosie fluid therapy and some drugs to help her breathe, and she's warm and pain-free so can sleep.

Sweet Hermione was fading away; old, unable to fight the infections raging inside her and the parasites taking advantage of her weakened state. She was a challenge to heal, but I'm so happy to say she's going home today, where she'll enjoy an easy life of gentle retirement.

Poor baby Ember - burdened with every internal parasite a hedgehog can have, then strimmed, wounded and starved. But just look at this brave baby today. Although only halfway through treatment, the subtle difference in her from the day she arrived, 10 days ago, is so touching.

Bunty's brothers are back!🥰 Steady Teddy and Fat Frank didn't return last year (they were all born here to Draper, a patient with a broken leg, in June 2021), so I feared the worst. But clearly it was just because they stayed healthy last year. They both arrived Saturday night

Dear little Tiggy had her last injection today, and has that cheeky sparkle back in her eyes. From a bony little 313g dying waif, she's now a fit and healthy 767g. All in just 18 days. Such remarkable little animals. She'll overwinter here, as it's far too cold to release now.

There are lots of newly awakened hedgehogs around right now, walking great distances, crossing roads, in search of food and a mate. Getting home 10 minutes later because you drove slowly won’t make that much difference to you, but it could make all the difference in the world
