I can’t believe I won the
@WeAreFootnote
and
@CounterArts
Writing prize for my family memoir, Wait for Her. I am over the moon, but it’s hard to celebrate while my people are subjected to a genocide. May this book be a way to keep talking about Palestine.
My only response to this is:
In order for me to write poetry that isn't political, I must listen to the birds
and in order to hear the birds
the warplanes must be silent
By Marwan Makhoul
APNews: Arts Council England (

Good morning! Today, I visited my friends and my favorite band, "Soul Band," in their displacement camp. I was very happy to see that the war hasn't stopped them from singing and keeping the good vibes alive!!
‘People can’t live without their parents. This is the first time my mom and dad haven’t been by my side. I really want to go to heaven and talk to them there’
1/3 As a Pa/estinian-Italian writer I have thought constantly about the words to explain this horror to myself, to people, to futures. Then I tell myself this is the time to just listen to the people who are actually there who are actually suffering who are actually doing.
I was born in the diaspora almost 50 years ago.
My parents couldn't raise me in Palestine, so they raised Palestine in me.
That's what we all do, every generation.... we nurture that love for Palestine, for life.
We will never stop. We will never be erased.
Imperialism and environmental destruction have always gone hand in hand. If you are outspoken about the climate crisis and the environment but stay silent about what’s happening in Palestine ( or in Congo, or in Sudan) then you are not at all working towards a greener future!
Colonialism destroys a people’s ability to sustain life on their own land. It is ecologically destructive.
For this reason, people say that colonialism caused climate change.
This is what genocide looks like in Palestine.
This this this! Also if you are a Palestinian student applying for any grant or competition (in arts and humanities) please get in touch and I will be happy to help!
What we are losing are not just our worlds and words but all the worlds our words would have created and that have been silenced and taken away from us. And it’s not about imaginative worlds but possible alternative worlds, better ones, possibilities for all.
I know almost all of them. I beg you to read our words, they might be the only thing left of a nation that has been searching for justice for decades.
These are the poets and writers who have been killed in Gaza.

I teach creative writing at uni and I have a history of successful grant applications: if you are a Palestinian writer and you want to apply to this or any other grant get in touch and I will help you editing your work and writing your application. I can also translate!
What’s happening on campuses around the world should remind us why we work in academia: students wants and will reclaim their better future and it’s so so so important that as their teachers we create decolonial spaces to empower them and join them into action!

Then Smith’s essay comes out (among others) trying so hard to be clever about this all. And it’s just empty: using words and language as cover for saying nothing. And in doing so managing to be narcissistic and hurtful. This is the opposite of what writing should be.
I have spent a whole week teaching active decolonisation in academia.
Well below is everything I fight against!
Stop using indigenous people and land to advance your career and then stay silent on the ongoing geno-ide!
“Very little is known about the territory beyond its propensity to violence and suffering.”
Intellectually vacuous, morally abhorrent, extractivist, colonial academia looks like this
The ignorance if this, the privilege of this, the racism of this! My family is a Christian Palestinian family who has lived in Palestine for centuries!
BBC shame on you
Interviewing a Catholic priest based on Jerusalem, a BBC news presenter just asked whether Israel was or was not discriminating between "Palestinians" and "Christians" in its attacks on Gaza. A profoundly revealing comment.
I am so happy to have been invited by

It has been happening for so long!
A friend who wrote a crime novel set in Gaza was asked by an agent why it needed to be set in Gaza, why could not they write the same thing but set in outer space? I swear I am not joking!
And I have a huge lists of stuff like that!

Do you have any idea how dehumanising this is?
40,000 Palestinian deaths - not a word. 7 international deaths - front pages of indignation
Do the math: 5,714 Palestinian lives for 1 white life.
During the massacre at al-Shifa Hospital, the Israeli army shot patients in their beds and doctors who refused to abandon the sick, separated people into groups with differently-colored bracelets, and executed hundreds of civil government employees.

As artists or those who support art, we need to create more and more events like these. Keep involving the public, normalising talking and hearing about the Pal-stinian struggle, introducing everyone to the wonderful Pal-stinian art under threat of censorship and erasure. (1/2)

I moved to Bath in 2015, fell in love, and decided, as European, to find my home here in the UK. Things got more difficult, but don't despair. Just a bit more time, I'll apply for citizenship, and then vote to go back in at the next referendum! See you then!

In winter 2013, leaving through their airport, I was put in an isolated room without any of my belongings, stripped naked to my knickers, left without my phone and passport for hours and then escorted to a plane by two officers. When I kept asking why, they answered: security!
Now, how many of the so-called permanent feminists/journalists will write about this? Or is your sympathy, outrage, very selective?

Dr Sonia Nimr mentored me in 2019 for my book. Her knowledge of Palestinian tales, her experience as a Palestinian woman, her spirit as a writer gave me faith in the power of words! Censoring her voice is vile. Representation? another empty tag-word, when words could do so much
Cannot read this because it's paywalled but the Newark Public Schools have removed “A Little Piece of Ground” by Elizabeth Laird & our beloved contributor Sonia Nimr. Outrage after outrage.
We’re asked to explain, be articulate. But the only thing to say is a never ending scream. We’re asked to give numbers, philosophies, sharable sentences for your feed.

This procession that it’s usually it’s full of music and joy, this year is a procession of mourning. Think about Palestine while you eat your Christmas meals
The traditional Christmas Eve procession of the Catholic Patriarch of Jerusalem to Bethlehem. Usually celebratory and accompanied by Christmas carols. This year it was silent and local Palestinian Christians carried banners supporting Gaza and calling for ceasefire

This morning I am not watching the ICJ hearing. Palestinians have heard enough of this already. I am not going to let the inflict me more pain.
#EndIsraelsGenocide
This resonates so deeply! How long I have been scared - and still am - of people’s reaction to my Palestinian identity.
All my life I have experienced the violence against, the sexualisation of, the dehumanisation of my identity.
For real, one of my earliest memories is worrying about how to tell people where my dad is from. He was born in Palestine, just west of Jerusalem, 10 yrs before Israel was a thing. I didn't want to lie, but I knew I would make the grown ups angry if I told the truth.
