THREAD🧵: We are facing the most significant capacity pressures we’ve experienced since the pandemic began. Units across all of our sites are straining as a result of significant staff shortages. Here are some of the things we are struggling with. 1/11
Hundreds of our staff and physicians are off work as a result of COVID infection or exposure, which is causing major staffing pressures and requiring us to postpone more surgeries and procedures. 2/11
🧵To our community: Our hospitals are under immense pressure. Severe staffing shortages, high demand for hospital services, and the arrival of the 7th COVID wave are burdening our teams. These are the highlights. For more details, visit our website. 1/15

We’ve been made aware that there is a false statement on social media claiming there’s been an increase in stillbirths at
@mch_childrens
and would like to reiterate that this is not true. The vaccine is key in protecting people against severe COVID-19, especially people
Please help minimize the burden of wave six on our community's health resources and the immunocompromised by continuing to wear your mask, getting vaccinated, and keeping your social bubble tight. If you're sick, stay home. 9/9
Bed occupancy at HHS is 110% on average, more patients are waiting longer in our EDs to be admitted, and it's taking longer for ambulances to get back on the road. 3/11
There is no single solution to the challenges we’re facing. COVID-19, a rising demand for care, and healthcare worker shortages are complex, systemic issues affecting all Ontario hospitals. 4/11
These are heavy burdens, but we're doing our best to protect our workforce and ensure our patients get the care they need. Here are some of the ways we're responding. 5/11
For the first time since mid-March, there are no patients with COVID-19 at Hamilton Health Sciences. As the pandemic is ongoing, we encourage everyone in the community to continue to physically distance and wash their hands.
🧵An update for our community: We continue to be challenged by extremely high patient volumes, low staffing levels, and the effects of COVID-19 in our community. 1/14
We are transferring patients who are medically suitable to other sites so that we can create capacity for patients with urgent needs. These settings include the Satellite Health Facility, St. Peter’s Hospital, and other community settings like long-term care. 7/11
We thank our staff for consistently rising to the occasion despite these ongoing challenges and remind our community to please consider various healthcare options in our community by visiting . 11/11
We are discharging patients sooner when it’s safe to do so and offering virtual and remote care options to help patients manage their health at home and avoid emergency department visits. 8/11
When's Dr. Miller's next day off? He's not sure. He was supposed to be in Florida with his family. Instead, he's leading our
#COVID19
assessment centre, seeing as many as 50 potentially infectious patients each day.
To help in the long term, we're enhancing our recruitment strategies in the context of a global nursing shortage. For example, building a “pipeline” to attract more people to our innovative Clinical Extern program & onboarding more internationally-trained professionals. 10/11
We're seeing an increase in the number of staff and physicians isolating at home due to COVID infection or exposure (296 today, up from ~200 two weeks ago). This is a reflection of increased COVID transmission in our community. 4/9
We are collaborating with regional partners to balance demands across hospitals, using agency staffing resources, and maximizing opportunities provided by our Clinical Extern program to hire third- and fourth-year students. 9/11
Our team at Juravinski Hospital had the privilege of caring for veteran Robert Armstrong today. In honour of his service, his care team helped put on his uniform and come to the nursing station so they could all pause for a moment of silence together.

Thank you to the healthcare workers across our city who are going to incredible lengths to care for our community. Tonight,

Try not to get COVID and if you do, don’t give it to anyone else. Wear a mask inside everywhere except your own home, keep your socializing outdoors (yay summer!) and get vaccinated. 11/15
How great (and true!) is this sign?
Thank you to the community members who are showing support for our staff and doctors during this difficult time. Your encouragement is appreciated. Keep it coming,

With safety of our patients and staff in mind, we’re maintaining our masking policy - everyone who enters our buildings must wear a mask. We’ll provide an update if we change our policy, which will be made on the advice of internal and provincial infection control experts.
Hamilton Health Sciences is pleased to offer free parking for everyone, including staff, physicians, patients and visitors, starting Friday, April 3 through the end of April. Visit our website for full details.
“I let my patients know that I plan on vaccinating my children as soon as the COVID vaccine is available for them.” As an HHS physician and a parent, Dr. Menaka Pai encourages COVID vaccines for everyone who’s eligible, including kids.

Staffing and capacity pressures are ongoing. We have been consistently operating above our total funded bed capacity since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has exacerbated these pressures. 5/9
We're not crying, you're crying. Our team at Juravinski Hospital made sure the bride's Nonna, Gemma, was part of her wedding with an outdoor visit on the big day. Sadly, Gemma passed away a few short weeks later. But this memory is forever. 💙 We're grateful to share this moment.

It's our job to do all we can to protect our patients, visitors, staff, physicians and learners from COVID-19. We'll continue to adjust our protocols in alignment with provincial guidance and expert advice. This includes maintaining our mandatory masking requirement. 8/9

➡️Staffing: We don't have enough staff and physicians to meet the needs of all patients. Global healthcare worker shortages, an increasing number of staff in isolation due to COVID, and higher than usual number of workers off sick are affecting our capacity to provide care. 2/15
While the province has seen a decrease in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, unfortunately
#HamOnt
and our wider region is still feeling the burden of the Omicron wave. We continue to see an extremely high demand for hospital care. 2/10
We are not out of the woods. The Ontario Science Table suggests that hospitals will experience prolonged occupancy challenges, including in ICUs, in the weeks and months to come. 6/10
This week alone our overall adult acute inpatient occupancy was over 110%. Some of our sites were over 120% capacity. For context, the ideal maximum occupancy for an acute care hospital is 85-90%. Plus, our ICU capacity has exceeded 95%. 3/10
Since we know staffing plays a critical role in ramping up, we’re pleased to report a decrease in the number of staff and physicians in isolation due to COVID. Plus, we’ve on-boarded more than 450 new employees since December. 8/10
We are gradually increasing clinical activity, however, our sites and programs also continue to deal with staff shortages and capacity challenges. Our planning must also ensure we prioritize access to regional programs and emergency services. 7/9

Surgical activity is proceeding at only 53% of pre-pandemic volumes, because we don’t have enough critical care beds for surgical patients. The minimum level to maintain access to urgent and emergent procedures is 75%. 4/10
Thank you to our staff and physicians for doing everything possible to care for more patients.
#HamOnt
, please continue to do your part too. Get vaccinated. Stay home. Call 9-1-1 and seek care if needed.
Healthcare officials across Ontario say the situation in children’s hospitals continues to worsen amid an unusually high seasonal surge in viral illnesses.
@botelhok
reports.
We have more patients than we have space and staff to care for them, which is consistent across the Hamilton-Niagara-Haldimand-Brant-Burlington (HNHBB) region. This has forced us to make the difficult decision to transfer some patients out of our region. 5/10
What can you do to help slow the spread of

ー19? A thread.
Remember when stores ran out of toilet paper because people rushed to stock up? We don't want the same thing to happen to our hospitals.
Stay home as much as possible to slow the spread.

We're closing out
#NationalNursingWeek
with this special photo. The Juravinski Emergency Department wanted to share a staff photo to celebrate nurses week and thank the entire site and nurses across the organization for all their support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Given all this, we are proceeding very cautiously on a very gradual ramp up to paused services to ensure we can maintain access to urgent and emergent care. We know this affects many people, and we are sorry we can’t offer better news right now. 7/10
➡️Demand: More people are seeking hospital care, and the overall severity of illness among those patients is increased. This is because many avoided or had to wait for care during the first two years of the pandemic. 5/15
After 4️⃣5️⃣ years, we are saying goodbye to longtime HHS nurse, John Sheppard. Although he wanted to bid goodbye quietly, his teammates organized a heartfelt sendoff to their adored friend & colleague. Thanks for an amazing run, John! We'll miss you. 💙

Thread🧵: The state of hospital care in

and our region remains strained as we are still feeling the burden of the Omicron wave. There is some good news and some bad news. 1/10
We also have a record-high number of patients in our hospitals - about 200 - waiting for a space in long-term care. Like hospitals, community agencies are also facing serious health human resource pressures, which create additional delays across the system. 7/15

4. COVID-19 itself, which is currently keeping more than 180 staff and physicians from work due to exposure or infection. We have 5 COVID outbreaks in our hospitals consisting of about 100 patients with COVID, which limits our ability to move patients between areas. 7/14
