Yesterday was a difficult time for many in the umpiring community. Conor McKenzie, a 2020 Wendelstedt Umpire School graduate, lost his life in a car accident on the way between assignments in the Northwoods League. Please keep Conor’s friends and family in your thoughts.
We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of
@MLB
umpire Eric Cooper. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Cooper family during this difficult time. Rest in peace brother

To clear up any confusion, the two parallel lines represent the runner’s lane. A batter-runner running outside that lane is liable to be called out for runner’s lane interference if he interferes with the fielder’s ability to the throw to first.
Last night, Mark Ripperger scored 100% accuracy via
@CloseCallSports
for Oakland pitcher Mike Fiers. This is Ripperger’s first called no-hitter. Great job back there, Rip!
Once again, congratulations to Brock Ballou on his MLB debut! Pictured left to right: Junior Valentine (115); Sean Barber (29); Brock Ballou (119); David Rackley (86). Also note that all four Umpires are Wendelstedt graduates😎
Hey, Ted. How many pitches do you think you missed today?
Actually, it was only 2.
92/92 on ball calls and 54/56 on strike calls for a 98.6%.
Who knows the name of the blue chest protector he wears?
Haters gonna hate. I would love to see any one of the internet trolls umpire one
@MLB
game, let alone 5,164. Joe, you’re one of the best to ever do it. Keep going strong

A runner that is running the entire distance outside of the running lane will not be protected if he interferes with a play at first base, EVEN IF it is in his last stride or step to the base. In order to be protected, this last step must be when he first exits the running lane.

Reasons (besides calling balls/strikes) that you need a home plate umpire.
-Fair/Foul decisions near home plate
-Batter’s interference on stolen bases
-Foul tips
-Tag/No tags on dropped third strikes
-Runners lane violations
-Safe/out at home plate
Need I say more?

In the professional baseball system, profanity-based offenses are considered especially heinous. In MLB/MiLB, the dedicated officials who report these offenses are members of an elite squad known as Umpires. These are their stories.
The Umpiring World will be witnessing history tonight! Tune in to watch a great friend of the school, Joe West, break the record for most games worked!

Today was a great day for a group of umpires selected to advance to the MiLB Umpire Placement Course. For everyone else, there’s a “Top Returning Student” trophy that you should be striving for. You know what you need to do.

Harry Wendelstedt took over the school in 1977. Though it has been called several names, the Wendelstedt School is the only school that has remained active since the late 30's. We have been and will continue to be THE Standard in Professional Umpire Training!
