We’re excited to announce that we’ve raised a $25M Series A to build Cloud Development Environments (CDEs) ☁️
Developing software in the cloud is not about simply replicating an existing local workflow to somebody else's machine that happens to run remotely in a data center.
We have big news: Gitpod is now open source! 🎉
Starting today, it’s easier than ever to streamline your team’s development workflow with prebuilt, collaborative development environments. All you need is a browser. 🚀
📣 VS Code in the browser for everyone.

Underappreciated developer experience gem: .env files
- configuration as code
- just leave them on the file system
But when every new workspace starts fresh from source control, you don't have a file system to leave them on
We wrote a guide on how to use .env files with Gitpod
👐 Integrate don't dictate
Putting developers’ interest first means to be transparent, open and flexible in product design & as a company.
We share that with our friends
@Tabnine_
who bring AI code completion to ephemeral developer environments.
When a student is excited to start a new course or workshop, the last thing they want is to be slowed down by a tedious setup process
What if you could offer that student a button that

- installs cli tools
- provisions the database

Remote development is the idea of hosting your code in the cloud and doing your development from there.
You can connect remotely from your IDE, but you've separated where your code is being run from where it's being written
This is how modern software is built
What a week in the Gitpod Community! 🫶
Thank you to everyone that joined us at our in-person community meet-ups (🇫🇷
#gitpodbrest
+ 🇳🇱
#gitpodamsterdam
) this week 🧡
In this guide, we show what ephemerality means for cloud development and how Gitpod makes it possible to
- Configure your dev environment as code
- Always start from a clean slate
- Run workspaces in parallel
- Prebuild your app to start instantly
Environment variables can now be configured at a project-level ✨!
With that, your Prebuilds have access to them too.
Navigate to your Gitpod project settings and look for the new "Variables" section.
With Gitpod Self Hosted, you can run Gitpod directly in your own infrastructure, but that's a lot of work if you're just trying it out.
So we're working on a new way to preview Gitpod without having to spin up a Kubernetes cluster
With Gitpod you now have a new editor option for your workspaces: a terminal in the browser.
The terminal in the browser is good for full-time coding with Vim or Emacs, or simply making quick edits. ⚡️
Do you still have a local development environment 😰?
That's ok, many people do - for now ⌛️. Have a read to see how it compares to ephemeral development environments in your browser and learn why they increase your productivity 🚀.
✨ Gitpod Installer - March 2022 Release ✨
