I am thrilled to announce that
@zusty
,
@C418
and I have started a new video game studio called Ivy Road! We are working with
@A_i
on an unannounced game, and I can't wait until we're able to finally show it to all of you.
I have the news you've all been waiting for.
Today is the first day that it is possible to legitimately get the Go Outside achievement in The Stanley Parable.
The Stanley Parable launched on Steam (checks watch) ten years ago today! Holy crap!
Recently while I was going through some old files, I found a recording of a skype call between myself and
@HonestWilliam
while we were making the game, dated Feb 6, 2013...
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is content complete and will be launching on consoles and computers early next year!
If you're wondering why this game has taken so long to develop, the script for new Ultra Deluxe content is actually LONGER than the script for the original game
Here's something I can't believe I'm saying: The Beginner's Guide came out 5 years ago today.
What a weird fucking game. I'm amazed it found the audience that it did. For years I'd been sitting on it, stressing about whether people would like it.
Nothing worse than thinking of a really cool idea for a new ending for Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe two weeks after the game has already launched, haha
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, our expanded re-imagining of Stanley Parable with all sorts of new content and secrets, is OUT NOW on Steam, Switch, PS4/5, and Xbox one/S/X! I'm so proud of this game and I really do hope you all enjoy it.
I just finished playing through a complete build of Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe for playtesting, and y'all... this game is fucking wild. I'm so excited to show it to all of you! Still a lot of development left, but it feels close.
It is 11pm. Jason Schreier sits down at his computer, opens a fresh Google Doc, and titles it "What went wrong with the development of Cyberpunk 2077." He flips the Miles Davis vinyl and pours a tumbler of Balblair single malt. A smile dances across his face. "I'm home."
Good god, it's been an insane last 24 hours. Thank you all so much for the love and support, I've just been scrolling through reactions of people finding this little secret or that one. It's a rare joy to get to do this 💖
In the first 24 hours after its release, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe has sold over 100,000 copies on Steam!
We're blown away by the response so far. Massive thanks to everyone who's playing, streaming and sharing!
We’re working with
@iam8bit
to bring you The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe Collector’s Edition (and more)! Pre-orders go live on THURSDAY 28TH MARCH, 9AM PST at
That mod changed my life, I can't imagine who I'd be today without it. It's been a decade beyond my wildest dreams. I'm incredibly lucky and incredibly grateful.✨
This was my favorite video game of 2022. I'm still in shock at how perfectly each level tells a "story" through its design, it'll be really hard to play other puzzle games after this one.
Patrick's Parabox, an award-winning recursive puzzle game, is out now on Steam and itch, for Windows+Mac+Linux!
Push boxes within boxes within boxes, and learn to use infinity to your advantage!
#PatricksParabox
A quick note for those who are about to boot up The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, at the beginning the game will ask you if you've played Stanley Parable before. Answering "yes" will ensure you see new content sooner, if you answer "no" it'll just take a little longer.
We've got a new Stanley Parable video for you! I know we haven't said much about Ultra Deluxe in a while, so we thought it would be fun to have the Narrator respond to some of the emails you've been sending us.
FINALLY the end is almost here! The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe launches on April 27 on Steam, Switch, Xbox One/S/X and PS4/5! I can't believe what a big, weird journey this has been. Very excited to finally get to show you all what we've been making.
The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe by
@crowsx3
is coming to
#NintendoSwitch
on April 27!
Uncover new content, new choices, and new secrets in this expanded re-imagining of the critically acclaimed indie game.
Stanley Parable is on sale all weekend until monday morning, and all profits will be donated to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. They're an amazing org helping victims all over the country, I'm so glad to be supporting them!!
Once the build was finally approved and playable, very positive reviews began coming in and it slowly began to counterbalance the game's overwhelmingly 1/10 score. Slowly I began to breathe again. Then a couple new sites ran stories about the mod, and everything exploded.
I'd worked on it by myself for two years, and was very excited to show it off. Unfortunately, because I didn't understand ModDB's submission process, the mod's page sat without any actual playable game build on it for almost 3 days.
Now that Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe is about to come out, can I just say that this project was my first time ever publicly delaying a game, and it was kinda surreal. Like "wait, y'all were actually taking those launch estimates seriously?? damn"
I enjoyed this video on my work a lot!! One thing I'd like to offer a thought on, because it's something I've seen a number of critics say, is the feeling that by reading into The Beginner's Guide and over-analyzing it, that they've "done what the game was warning against."
It's a Hot Takeout, fresh from the oven!
@VoidBurger
has a lot of musings about The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, and how it tricks gamers into eating their vegetables, just a little bit.
In those 3 days, users began coming to the game's page and subsequently rating it 1/10 when they realized there was nothing playable. I freaked out, believing all my work was going down the drain. Site admins agreed to remove one of the negative reviews, but the rest stayed.
My google alert for "Stanley Parable" has turned up a few results lately of people asking where Ultra Deluxe is, so let me say that we will have an update for you soon-ish. But in the mean time, I see you! I acknowledge your concerns! Something soon(-ish)!
To be clear, the game is finished. I've actually had pretty bad postpartum depression on this one, ruminating on all the things I could have done with it to make it even better. At some point you just have to let it go, and the best thing for me is to make peace with it, I think.
An update on the development of Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. I'm sure it's not what you want to hear, but "not what you want to hear" seems to be the theme of 2020, so I guess it's on brand.
(For context, at the start of this recording we are discussing the Incorrect Ending, which you get by unplugging the telephone)
((also for context, William and I worked on this game exclusively over skype audio calls and never met in person until after the game was out))
Lastly, here's a quote that I almost put at the start of the game as an epigraph, but I removed it at the last second because it felt too on the nose. I sort of wished I'd left it in.
Originally this was meant to be a much smaller, simpler project. But as things went on we kept having more and more ideas that felt exciting and fun to us, and we had to do it. I'm glad we did, but it's taken quite a while to cram it all in there.
I am hiring two full-time programming roles for the new game I'm working on! (not the new Stanley Parable, something else) If you or someone you know might fit these job descriptions, I'd love to hear from you
RTs on this would be much appreciated 😘

I'm feeling very proud of the work we did on this game, and I hope you enjoy it when it comes out!
It's a very... weird game. It's different than the original Stanley Parable, sort of. We wanted even veterans of the game to feel surprised. I'm glad we took this path.
Since I guess I never actually posted it, here is the video announcing Ivy Road, the game studio that
@zusty
,
@c418
and I started in collaboration with
@A_i
. This debuted on the Annapurna showcase last summer.
I still hear from folks who say it was a very meaningful experience for them, which is extremely gratifying for me. I also hear from people who say it was self-obsessed and navel gazey, haha. I mean, they're not wrong.
Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe's store page is now live, if you'd like to get some more vague info on the game, and also if you'd like to wishlist it (because apparently that is a thing that helps your game's sales here in the year 2021)
There's been some "writing discourse" on twitter. I don't usually participate in discourse, but this time I happened to get a thought rolling around in my head, and I wanted to try to define it, so I'll write it down here to see if it takes.
I am live now on my brother
@DougDougFood
's twitch channel, playing and discussing Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe. We are going to teach game design to his chat.
Huge huge congrats to my brother for hitting a million subs on youtube! It's hard to believe how far this channel has come in such a short amount of time ✨
holy crap I hit a million subs
What an insane number. Thank you all so so so much for everything. I'm still constantly blown away that this is a real thing and I get to keep doing it as my job <3
Drop me your favorite albums/playlists/mixes of chill music you like to put on in the background while you get work done! I'm in the mood for some good new tunes this morning.
Finally, we want to find a time to launch the game that isn't absolutely dominated by other high profile releases (stares in horror at feb 2022 release calendar). No sense spending all this time only to get lost in a tidal wave of other games.
And finally, thank you to the amazing folks at
@crowsx3
for their incredibly hard work shaping this game into something I think is pretty special. Grateful to have their phenomenal talents bringing this oddball project to life <3
If you're wondering why we don't have an exact release date despite being "content complete," it's a few reasons. One, we're still doing extensive playtesting to make sure we catch any bugs and smooth out any weirdness in the player experience.
(Also, even though
@IvyRoadGames
is my day job, I'm still very hard at work on Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. I've been writing and rewriting the whole game in my evenings and weekends, while
@crowsx3
handle primary development making it look amazing. More updates on that soon!)

Heads up, today is the last day you can get Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe for 33% off on Steam if you own the original game.
Thank you all so much for the continuing love and support you've shown our game! 💕
Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe launches tomorrow at these times around the world. Been waiting for this day for quite a long time. Hope you all enjoy what we've made!
Boundary Break did an episode on stanley parable, showing off a bunch of neat little things about how the levels are designed. Love it! Thank you so much for making this!
Out of Bounds video of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe includes:
- Out of bounds easter eggs
- Developer tricks explain by the games lead designer (William Pugh)
- Guest voice over from The Narrator (Kevan Brighting)
A second reason is we have to actually submit the game for certification on consoles, which would take a while anyway, but with the holidays coming up people are going to just be less available than usual.
Thank you all SO MUCH for your patience, in spite of our repeatedly delaying the game and saying very little about it. I'm sure it's been frustrating, but we're working very hard on this game and I really hope you enjoy it once it comes out 💖
The truth is that I'll probably never make another game like this again. Solipsism is a young person's game. When I think about trying to be publicly vulnerable in that same way today, it just makes me feel exhausted.
...which is exactly what Beginner's Guide is in the first place. Funny. I used to be excited about that kind of thing, but age turns us outward, away from ourselves and toward the world. Talking about myself is just less interesting to me now.
Incredible that valve announces beneficial revenue share only for the most successful games the same week that Epic announces an even BETTER revenue share for literally everyone. It's making Epic look like a saint.
I haven't properly announced this before, but given the light of today's events, here we go: my game engine is ✨open source✨
if you're ever feeling experimental or just want to dive in a lot of nerdy code:
it's fun and it's free and it's dotnet 7!!!
Can someone help me better understand what is the value of media where the primary takeaway is “this made me feel like shit”? I still struggle with why some people value and cherish so deeply the media that makes them feel this way.
Last week I was looking through a journal that I wrote during the game's development, I was considering transcribing it and posting it online for public enjoyment. But... as I read it I just kept thinking "this is too vulnerable, I don't wanna share this."
In these times of confusion and uncertainty and general sense of hopelessness, I'm glad to give Stanley Parable away so that folks have a chance to escape from- wait... no... shit. Never mind.
We've been reviewing the work that's completed, and I actually think this game is going to be fucking sick.
@crowsx3
have been doing an amazing job, and I think fans of the original game are going to be really pleasantly surprised. Thank you all for your patience!!
This is America
Don't let you slip and fall

Holy shit, I just completed 7-99 in Spelunky 2. This might be the hardest challenge I have ever seen in any video game ever?? This thing has consumed my life these last few months, I am so elated and relieved that I finally pulled it off.
