Since people are suddenly interested in writing about the need for Jewish representation, I would like to repost my article for
@ComicWatchHQ
on that very question. It's time to talk about Jewish representation not just in the MCU but in comics too.
Dear artists at Marvel,
Jewish people do not wear crosses. Not regular crosses, not upside down crosses, not crosses of any kind. Regardless of how punk we are.
Kindly, please stop drawing Billy Kaplan with them.
Sincerely, Jewish comic book fans.
Wow. Marvel actually got a Jewish actress to play a jewish character. Gotta admit, I didn't see Sabra coming. I'm excited and worried at the same time. Here's hoping they do it right.
Dear
@Marvel
,
Please do a Marvel's Jewish Voices anthology. There are great Jewish writers and artists out there who would love to contribute to stories that celebrate and highlight your Jewish characters.
Sincerely, a Jewish comics fan and historian
@lunellasflo
Also Andi Mack. But that leads me to a theory, that either Disney only wants Jews as best friends or sidekicks, and within certain parameters. OR its the MCU having some kind of issue with jewish characters.
1. MK. a jewish actor could have noted Marc's lack of physical participation in Judaism and pointed out that its odd his dad isn't a Rabbi. Or suggested something from his personal experience that could have helped the character. Or that the kippah scene felt empty & pointless
Asked why it was important for Mason and Natasha to NOT have a romantic relationship or kiss at the end of
#BlackWidow
:
"The movie is bigger than that," O-T Fagbenle said. "It was important to know that that relationship is part of family as well."
2. Magneto. A Jewish actor could have pointed out in First Class that maybe having Erik agree with his abuser was a bad take, and Erik's philosophy could have been better illustrated.
3. a jewish actor playing Kitty Pryde could have noted that she never wears the star of David she's worn for years. Maybe could have suggested ONE FREAKING SCENE between Kitty and Erik regarding the whole Jew and mutant thing.
1. I’ll believe it when I see it. 2. So wait marvel is allegedly capable of casting Jewish actors to play Jewish superheroes. So Explain Billy Kaplan and Moon Knight?
5. A jewish actor playing Ben Grimm might help better illustrate the existential crisis the character goes through when he is made "golem-like" and maybe seeking council with someone who knows him, maybe his Rabbi.
Lastly to end this thread. It is important to have not just Jewish actors involved. But you need Jewish voices behind the scenes as well, as execs, directors, writers, comic book writers and artists and editors too.
A Jewish actor playing Billy Kaplan could rightfully suggest some kind of scene based on his experience with his parents, making Challah for shabbat. Or add some dialogue that illustrates Billy effectively being three minorities, Jewish, Gay, and a mutant...
@TheeDCstan
Did...did no one else saw the freaking instantaneous shift from "Oh wow he's being a nice guy they're bonding..." to "Full blown sociopath" Like I could see people thinking of Namor as like a missing mentor/brother figure, UNTIL that freaking shift.
Jewish representation in comics comes in moments, not stories. Its background, its origins, or its trauma, its rarely existence. Or it's coding. Rarely do you get an actual story and rarely is it not related to Hanukkah. BUT either way the a character being jewish matters.
This is your daily reminder, Billy Kaplan is Jewish. He has a Jewish identity. He sees himself as Jewish. Other people know he's Jewish. He had a Jewish wedding with a Rabbi (even their vegas wedding had a Jewish officiant). Jewish representation matters.
@VicRoseArts
Hey. Nothing wrong with interfaith upbringings; I want to be clear on that. In this case, this is not an interfaith character. And the upside down cross in this case is also doubly iffy because he's a jewish character.

I didn’t know it was possible to escape communism before Marx was even born. Dude. I’m a historian. And there’s so many things wrong with your statement.
@supspidertalk
Marvel did the same thing for Trial of Magento. They have no understand of Hey this might not be appropriate for people of all cultures.
Remembering the KING of comics, Jack Kirby, on his birthday. Creator/co-creator of the New Gods, Mr. Miracle, Big Barda, the Silver Surfer, Galactus, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, the X-men, etc.
You know what I would like? In a perfect world. No Agatha show, or no Agatha show with Billy Kaplan. I'd make a YA movie the way they made the comic. Teens introduced and general audience doesn't know who they are.

Considering the average person's knowledge of the Holocaust and the high rate of antisemitsim. there is 1000% value to keeping Magneto Jewish and a Holocaust survivor.
@rshereme
Russia asking someone else to negotiate and for the party that's been invaded to exercise restraint, is a new level of hypocrisy. but then again what can I expect from the new ssr, off the coattails of the country that invented a new form of antisemitism.
Wow. Thank you so much for 1. Acknowledging the error & 2. For asking that it be removed from future printings and digital version. Please let us, or me privately, know what the response was.
@GeekyKaplan
I asked them if they could take it out of the digital versions and future printings. We’ll see what they say.
There were billions of cultural art notes — the artist is Italian and my guess was doing Italian pov on occult.
But we all missed it and shouldn’t have.
Saw Mel Brooks was trending. Nearly had a heart attack. Just people debating Young Frankenstein vs Blazing Saddles and talking about his movies. Also like to toss in my favorite.
To be Or Not To Be, although it's a remake, its still amazing.

Allegory yes. But magneto isn’t an allegory. He is a Holocaust survivor. And making him the victim of something else is insulting and erasure. It’s saying they Jewish victims don’t matter. That antisemitism isn’t a problem anymore when it is
Name a movie or tv episode that deals with/portrays everyday Antisemitism? But not nazis. We got School Ties, Gentleman's Agreement, and that episode of Golden Girls. All in the Family. Fiddler. Am I missing anything?
Personal Opinion: Tommy was robbed. Billy wasn't. Billy grew up with two parents who loved him unconditionally. Don't get me wrong, Wanda and Vision would have been good parents. But Billy had the best parents. Tommy deserved/needed good parents to love and take care of him.
tommy and billy deserve the entire world, and they deserved vision and wanda who woulda been the best parents ever. in conclusion, we were robbed, and they were robbed.
The success of
#WandaVision
shows 1. That Marvel CAN and SHOULD do things differently and 2. That a risk like this can be successful and pay off. I think this also bodes well for
#Eternals
. Marvel's risks 9.9/10 pay off.
As I work on increasing Jewish representation, I'd like to tell you about Sasha's test. To pass the test is very simple. Two Jewish characters in a film or tv show must have a conversation about some element of Jewish identity, the legume debate, a note on antisemitism, etc.
Dear
@netflix
I'd just like an explanation for that antisemitic film You People....cause it's not only a bad movie, but it reinforces a lot of antisemitic tropes and rhetoric. Would you have released a movie that normalized bigotry against any other group?
I don't get people acting like Charlie (HS) and Billy Kaplan are identical/interchangeable characters. Sure they have slightly similar features, dark hair, on the skinny side. But they're completely different characters.
@franklinsherald
Honestly? Probably antisemitism. Because they can't comprehend why the Erik's jewish identity is so important to so many people. And why having a Jewish actor is important after 2 non-Jewish actors.
@UpToTASK
Doubtful. I think it was just done to show that the Skulls could infiltrate everywhere and tha they became Fury's eyes and ears, making him the king of intelligence.
@cultureIcon
@wandavision
@disneyplus
And? Mandelorian episodes were anywhere from 32 to 45 minutes and people still went nuts over it. Maybe watch it before making snap judgements.
So is our Afikomen going to be Billy's Bar Mitzvah in a flashback? Does that mean the kid from WandaVision is coming back for that? OR are they gonna pull a MK and just have Judaism happening around Billy but never have him participate or speak about it?
According to a past casting call, ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’ has seemingly filmed a Bar Mitzvah scene with 13 year old kids on April 11-12. It looks like the scene was shot in Temple Kol Emeth.
@BatsyBullets
No. It's not. Marc literally never mentions he's Jewish. We got an empty Kippah scene with zero understanding what his kippah means to him, nor was his dad ever mentioned to be a Rabbi. There's zero understanding of what being Jewish means to Marc, in the comics you know.
Makes perfect sense to me. Why waste time and effort on a studio who will on a whim cancel your project for zero rational reason screwing you over? No one will want to work with WB if this keeps up.
After news of WB shelving ‘COYOTE VS ACME’ broke, several filmmakers instructed their reps to cancel meetings they had on the books with Warner Bros.

@wandasflash
Lol. As a woman what I hate is having my favorite characters not in a movie where others members of the team they named and created are and are nothing more than side characters to prop up Harley Quinn. Honestly? This movie didn’t feel empowering.
Alright ladies and gentlemen. Let's place our bets. What will the Afikomen Effect looks like in Agatha Coven of Chaos. And don't say a blink and you miss it Menorah.
Plot twist. It turns out that Billy Maximoff in Agatha is actually Mephisto or Master Pandemonium and the after credit scene has a Jewish kid named Billy Kaplan being called to Shabbat dinner, Bilyl's on the phone with his bf and says "Sorry Teddy, Gotta go, its shabbat."
So uh, if there's an infinite universe of Spider-Men and women, and others, where is my explicitly and unapologetically Jewish Spider-Man? An afikomen doesn't count.
Look. I’m already mentally preparing for the Jewish erasure of Billy Kaplan in the mcu. It’s gonna happen. Because marvel doesn’t care about its Jewish characters. And no amount of me tweeting is going to change that. Hiring Jewish staff will.
This is correct. “Original Billy” is actually William Kaplan, who dies in the car accident. Billy’s soul (stuck in limbo after the hex was taken down) finds residence in William’s body as his soul leaves in
#AgathaDarkholdDiaries
.
Yes, it’s problematic. No, it won’t be changed.
@casperp99
@ICARUSWALLS37
There's literally at least three Jewish actors I can think of that looks like Billy and would also be perfect for teh role. To act like Joe was the only option is disingenuine.
1. IDK who Jon is or if he's reliable. So I'll believe it when I see it. 2. Joe, who is likely playing a 16 yo doing a BM scene makes no sense. 3. Marvel's record on Jewish rep is abysmal, so why should I trust it when they can't even cast Jewish actors, save for the dad?
HC: There's a Jewish superhero support network. Cause 1 all the Jewish superheroes know each other and 2. All the Jews probably know who the Jewish superheroes are. Because of course, we do.
@LacksFriends

@conquercomics
All those nominations are for this specific comic that I posted screenshots of. Maybe read the material before decrying something as "bad writing." He's the current showrunner for Sandman too. Heinberg is a good writer and he gets comics. And Kate's co-creator.
@EvanNotEven
@Lesb1ben
Reed Richards is a complicated man capable of good and bad decisions. But one thing is, he loves his children and a lot of people forget that Reed and Sue have two pretty great kids.
I will take things that make no sense for 200% I need a source of this. Because otherwise what is the point of introducing Sabra, and having her be played by an Israeli actress. Unless she's actually gonna be working for Mossad. But a Mossad agent in the CIA is a super bad take.
Ok, if this doesn't prove you could do a Marvel's Jewish Voices Anthology, I don't know what will. But seriously, this was a sweet story, with every character being Jewish. It's about the quest to find love, responsibility, and finding a community that gets you & supports you.
Almost 10 minutes into You People and I cannot understand how a Jewish person wrote this. This isn't parody. This isn't commentary it's just antisemitic cringe. WTF.
We sadly already knew it was gonna be Billy given the other leaks. I only hope they'll recast him for later projects with a Jewish actor. Though unlikely. I guess we can at least hope that the on-screen is not just an Afikomen or total erasure.
Still crying tears of joy getting at getting everything I asked for for the big wedding. Rabbi kippah, huppah, breaking of the glass. And it’s the same rabbi that married Ben and Alicia. We love our gay Jewish space wedding.
Rember Billy Kaplan? A character who came on the scene not knowing his full heritage or potential, who had powers he didn't understand, and who managed to become a superhero without the need for mentorship from anyone? Marvel clearly doesn't.
Gotta love folks acting like a Disney show portraying antisemitism is somehow impossible, yet Disney can talk about racism, sexism and Islamophobia... but we draw the line at antisemitism. Cause ya know. Can't actually do stories about jews.
FYI Just because Billy didn't run around telling everyone he was Jewish nd wearing a kippah on every panel doesn't mean 1. that it's not a key part of who he is. 2 you can just erase it in the MCU. Ethnicity is important.
Nothing is worse than a Jewish person telling me that we need to tone down Jewish representation because if it’s too Jewish it won’t be relatable enough. And I’m like. What? I dare you to say that about any other group.
@therealsupes
I maintain my previous comment regarding this. Esposito is a king among actors, and I love him in everything he goes. But a Jewish actor needs to play Magneto. He'd make a fantastic Professor X.
I legitimately would like to interview the cast of You People. I have so many questions about how this movie came together and WHY it was done the way it was. Cause...I genuinely do not understand how not a single jewish person questioned this film or this script.
THIS IS Teddy Altman, aka Hulkling. Half Kree/HalfSkrull raised on earth. Current King of the Kree/Skrull empire. Space Arthur married Jewish Merlin Billy Kaplan.
NOT IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM RELATED TO THE HULK!!!!!
I have seen Marvel give representation to different cultures and people's through their films and shows. I'm just curious when the MCU is going to put the same effort for Jewish superheroes.
