An 18-month-old child killed with a single gunshot to the head. The desperate hope for a ceasefire turned to tragedy for one mother in Gaza this evening.
As people’s charred remains are pulled from burning tents in Rafah and scores of others with horrific injuries are transported to hospital, a doctor who was volunteering in Gaza sent this message.
“What we are asking is for people to get out into the streets and squares, to surround the embassies to stop the torrent of Palestinian blood.”
A desperate plea from the head of one of the last functioning hospitals in Rafah.
Israel has started using a numbered grid system for evacuation warnings, accessed via a QR code on leaflets dropped from the sky and via social media. This has led to terror and confusion as people struggle to find refuge from the heavy bombardment.
Dr Adnan Al-Bursh was a widely respected orthopaedic surgeon who trained in Jordan and the UK. He was killed after 4 months in Israeli detention. A fellow detainee testified to
@HCWWatch
that he was being tortured. Medical organisations have yet to condemn his killing.
Doctors are sharing reports of Israeli forces blocking ambulances from rescuing casualties in Rafah & describe devastating, targeted injuries in those who reach medical aid. Hospital teams are exhausted, the influx of casualties is relentless & the patients are arriving in agony.
As international governments show just how weak their Rafah ‘red lines’ really are, a doctor in Gaza describes what the current Israeli onslaught feels like to those on the receiving end.
Renowned surgeon Dr Adnan Al Bursh was abducted from a Gaza hospital in Dec 23. A former student of

that he was being tortured. Today 2 prisoner orgs announced he has been killed.
Dr. Saleh Eleiwa is a junior doctor working at Shifa Hospital. On the 18/11/23 he disappeared as he travelled south along the designated ‘safe route’ and we haven’t heard from him since.
We call for his safe release and for an end to the abductions of Palestinians in Gaza.
Colleagues say they have had enough of endlessly describing the horrors they are witnessing. They want action from the international community rather than words.
SHIFA UPDATE: Israeli forces are abusing and abducting hospital staff. The UK gov has already ordered an investigation into the horrors at Nasser Hospital. These horrors are happening again right now. ATTACKING HOSPITALS AND HOSPITAL STAFF IS A WAR CRIME.
Despite daily SOS messages from healthcare workers throughout the Gaza Strip, and despite the ICJ provisional measures for plausible genocide, the civilian massacre and systematic attacks on healthcare continue with impunity, as the world watches on.
For 100 days, Gaza has faced a deadly Israeli onslaught. Medical staff have been forced to endure unthinkable conditions as they try to alleviate the horrific suffering of the injured. Don’t let another day pass without doing everything you can to put a stop to this massacre.
Right now tanks are shelling in the vicinity of Nasser Hospital, and drones are firing heavily towards the medical centre’s buildings and courtyards, endangering everyone inside.

The invasion of Rafah is underway. This will lead to the mass slaughter of terrified, exhausted people in the very place they had been told they would be safe.
Nurses and doctors in Al Aqsa hospital were forced to ventilate critically ill patients by hand earlier today because Israel continues to prevent sufficient fuel from entering Gaza. Medical staff can’t provide proper patient care without electricity.
‘We chose to be here, to support the people of Gaza and Palestine as they are subjected to the most grotesque Israeli violence.’ A volunteer doctor responds to the spate of media stories focusing on the challenges facing the ‘trapped’ international volunteers.
There are severe water shortages in Gaza right now. Israeli airstrikes have caused extensive damage to water infrastructure in Gaza and the fuel blockade is stopping desalination and waste water treatment. Ref:

The messages we are receiving from colleagues in Rafah in the face of the Israeli onslaught are increasingly desperate. Al Najjar hospital has been forced out of service today and the pressure on the few remaining hospitals is mounting.
We have been sent thousands of photos and videos of children with devastating injuries from colleagues working in Gaza. They are unbearable to look at, but show the reality of the Israeli airstrikes and ground offensive.

Just imagine what the last five months of this child’s life have been like, before Israeli forces fatally injured him and he died without a single familiar face at his bedside.

“Seeing their children as decomposing corpses and their bodies completely torn apart is a scene that can’t be described”. Haunting words from one of the UN team visiting Shifa hospital to support the identification of the remains of the people killed there during Israel’s raid.
Since 7th May when Israeli forces seized control of the Rafah crossing, Israel has blocked ANY medical evacuations from taking place. The WHO estimates there are 11,000 people right now who need urgent medical evacuation out of Gaza for life- or limb-saving treatment [WHO 28/05].
Al Awda Hospital was subjected to 18 days of siege by the Israeli army, preventing access to severely injured people. After the siege finally ended four days ago, the hospital has received many patients with old, untreated injuries who have developed life-threatening infections.
Israel is starving Palestinians to the point of famine in Gaza. Deaths are rising. The starvation that Israel has caused will have lifelong effects for those who do survive: many children will be stunted for life, struggle academically and suffer multiple health problems.
We continue to receive horrific reports from Nasser Hospital with multiple casualties in the immediate vicinity of the hospital that cannot be reached for emergency care due to ongoing Israeli sniper fire.

‘Five months capable of demolishing mountains’. A dear colleague wrote to us of the toll that the unrelenting Israeli onslaught has taken on the people of Gaza.
It's been over 48 hours since we heard from Dr. Khaled Al Serr, the brave surgeon who has been sending voice notes describing the Israeli attacks on Nasser Hospital as they happen. We've received reports of many of hospital staff being abducted. Our statement:

Countries around the world are continuing to supply Israel with the weapons that are killing and maiming children. One child in this photograph died soon after it was taken. The other has severe brain damage and is critically ill on ICU.
Right now Israeli forces are attacking El Shifa hospital. They're killing and injuring people inside the hospital grounds. The attacks are preventing hospital staff from providing life-saving care to patients and people will die as a result. ATTACKING HOSPITALS IS A WAR CRIME.
At least 4 Gaza medics have disappeared in the past week as they travelled south. We suspect they have been abducted by Israeli forces – we’ve had reports of many other people taken captive on the same road each day. We fear for their safety and call for their immediate release.
One day after shelling Kamal Adwan hospital multiple times, forcing staff and patients to flee, Israel has stormed the besieged Al Awda hospital. These were the last two partially functional hospitals in northern Gaza.
Attacking hospitals is a war crime.
Over 2,000 Gazans are diagnosed with cancer each year, including 122 children (MOH annual report 2022). In the midst of the violence, a pharmacist colleague reflects on the complete eradication of cancer services for people living with cancer in Gaza.

Day 102 and colleagues in Gaza say they are exhausted. Exhausted from forced displacement and terrible living conditions. Exhausted from trying to save patients with devastating injuries without basic resources. Exhausted from indiscriminate killing of colleagues & loved ones.
Israeli troops have directly targeted medical staff in Gaza while they are at work. Here a colleague describes how the ambulance he was in came under attack. He was shot three times and has been left with a devastating leg injury which cannot be properly treated in Gaza.
A volunteer doctor working in one of Gaza's remaining functional hospitals describes no longer being able to reach the hospital as the area is closed in on by Israeli forces.

During armed conflict, pregnant women have higher rates of miscarriage, stillbirths, prematurity and other adverse outcomes (Keasley et al, BMJ Glob Health, 2017). In Gaza, the risks for pregnant women are being compounded by the destruction of the health system.

‘The veneer of humanitarian access is a cover for the most horrific violence’. A British doctor volunteering in Gaza begs the world to pay attention as the attacks on Rafah escalate.
Yesterday two medical colleagues in the south of Gaza told us that they were shot at WHILE SHELTERING IN THEIR TENTS. One was unharmed, the other's sister was hit in the arm.
Human Rights Watch says the Israeli government is still using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza despite the ICJ’s binding order (26/2). This is a war crime. They have “simply ignored the court’s ruling and in some ways even intensified its repression”.
