I do not write every day. Toni Morrison said that she didn't write daily, but she **thought** every day I like that. For me, writing entails tasks like journaling, researching, reading, etc. I'm a fast writer. I can pump out 2,000 words in 1.25 hrs, but only after... (5)

Be clear on context and terminology. Pretend like you're writing a Wikipedia entry: what's the most basic knowledge a reader needs to have to understand your argument? This may be history, geography, etc. Also, define your terms! Think beyond the 1- 2 sentence definition [10]

Outlines are overrated. Most writers get anxious because they try to make the draft work for the outline. It's the other way around. The outline must change w your argument! Sure, outline, but also trust your instinct

My jaws keep dropping as I go through 70 PhD applicant files. People w/ 2 coauthored papers & an interesting solo writing sample don’t even make it to the top 10 in my pile. The level of knowledge, research experience & passion these kids bring to the table is just remarkable! 🤩
