Using games as the focus of training. Challenging players to develop as decision makers. Emphasis on player engagement in reflection & problem solving.
The forward movement and array of forward moves in football is as good as its ever been. What learnings could players and coaches take from this clip?? 🏀 🏀

Some Ciaran McDonald clips that didn’t make the cut in the recent series. The 2nd score is one of the longest scores out of hand I’ve ever seen. Surely top three kickers of a football all time.
This is a fascinating discussion to listen to for any coach. 1. Ideas or tactics can be borrowed from other sports. 2. Things change in games & from game to game (tactics, formations etc) but you can rely on your principles of play
Excited to share that we've developed a coaching resource for all ages & abilities in the GAA or LGFA. This fantastic resource allows coaches to design game based sessions, using a unique session builder. Access to 300+ game based activities, skill games and technical games. 👀👀
Spotted this on Saturday evening. 👀 The loop is a common sight in Gaelic football but this is top notch. A repeated pattern with variation 👏🏻👏🏻Brilliant recognition from

to cut after the loop 🏃♂️
There weren’t many better than Gareth Bale at the peak of his powers.
His breathtaking solo run for Real Madrid against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final 🤯
🧵
Watching in real time yesterday, as soon as Galway picked up the break, I thought ‘goal’. Kerry had just gone into the lead 0-15, 0-14. Probably the most exposed the Kerry D were yesterday.
#GAA
Re watching Paudie Clifford's brilliant goal v Monaghan and a few things to note 📝
1. How hard he works to get ahead of the ball
2. How often he scans 👀
3. Left and right hand bounce
4. How the opposite hand to foot solo affords him the opportunity to score at the end 🥅
Here’s the same clip from behind the goals. Man to man, passing off runners, denying space etc. There’s a lot going on here. Not easy to do IMO

#ALLIRELANDFINAL
MUST WATCH: The communication and organisation in the Derry defence V Tyrone was brilliant. The term ‘many generals and all troops’ comes to mind. They could be a serious prospect in this year’s championship.
#GAA
All-Ireland Final 2019: Love this clip. One of the best plays in recent memory. It doesn’t get talked about enough IMO. What would the winners list look like in 20 & 21, if Kerry had closed it out?? In someways this clip defines that Dubs team. How did they do it??
#GAA
So much unseen work goes into building a score. Dublin aren’t afraid to go into corners. It stretches the defence. Recycle & change POA. No contact on the ball. Limited plays on the ball. Exploit the 1v1.
@starryboy14
pointed out the Dubs use of the back door cut last year

This years NFL has been really exciting. The forward movement and understanding of space is at an all time high. Loops & cutbacks common place now. Only a matter of time before we see it more in the club game
#GAA
The press defence from the dubs is phenomenal. The level of communication and organisation is top class. At times, it looked like they wanted Meath to kick short. Makes planning a kick out strategy very difficult.
#GAA
First Pass Forward is a must after winning a TO.
The advantage of using a kick pass as that first pass is often understated. Dublin completely take out the Louth defence with two kick passes.
Kick pass when you can!!
Principle of Play: Get the ball to the next level.

Loops & 3rd man runners. Is this concept firmly embedded in the club game at this stage?? If not, how do you begin to encourage it with your players??

U-7 or U-9 session. Going to put all of last weeks games together for tomorrow evening. I've added a fun game as a station as well. Should be comfortably able to cope with 40ish by using 5 stations. About ten mins a station & rotate through them.

Retrieval is something you can (and should try to) use with any age group.
It’s a great way to check for understanding and focus the players minds for what’s to come.

Forward movement 🏃♂️Making more than one run is a must. The lateral runs here and recognition to empty out are top class. This visual might help your players.

1 Theme: Not in possession. Another clip of the Dubs in defensive action. The delay and dictate aspect on show again. Refuse to give up the wing easily. Relentless work rate.

Rewatching the Munster Final. Kerry utilised the keeper V Cork in the same way Tyrone & Monaghan did. Should make for an interesting AI semi-final. Both teams have plenty of time to plan. How would you counter it?

Here's an activity to consider if you're working with U-7s or U-9s this week. Works just as well for hurling and football. A few progressions included as well.

Is ‘crowding the D’ the new ‘Free the D’?
Previous Dublin teams may have looked to free the D but this one are creating space in a different but equally effective way.

Does every coach in your club use the same language when it comes to tactical concepts, skills, FMS & athletic development?? If they don't, should they? Is there a plan? Would it be more player friendly? Have a look at U-7 hurling language & cues.

One point down. 48 mins on the clock. Éanna Murphy delivers a 🚀 of a puck out. Arrows it between a cluster of Limerick defenders. 🎯 Unbelievable puck out!! View from behind gives us a look at how small the margin for error was & a look at the Limerick zone

There are many basketball concepts that can be taken and applied to Gaelic games. Certainly the backdoor cut is one that is becoming more popular. Great way to keep defenders honest.

Can we create a game to encourage players to try and develop the skill?
#GAA
Based on the last 3 games posted, here’s a sample of a session that you could run for 30/32. Theme = not in possession, sub-theme = delay and dictate in defence. Start with initial game, split panel & rotate through modified & progressive game. Back to initial game to finish.

Kerrys deep set up for their ‘Bunch and Break’ KO.
The extra depth & space makes man on man defending virtually impossible. What would your approach be?? Will the Dublin press be able to crack it?
Under 8 session from this weekend. Survived the experience. Warm up game, rotated through 3 games & finished with a mini match at the end. Each rotation was 4x1 mins but one of those minutes was for explicit instruction i.e dodging etc Any feedback appreciated.

The before & after of Tony Kelly’s awesome point V Limerick. It gives us a little glimpse of what made this game such a spectacle. Kelly given the license to roam & the intelligence from Flanagan, after the score. Unbelievable!!

Lots of teams focusing on getting numbers back and defending the D. Getting numbers back is important but being aggressive in the D is also vital. Here’s a game ‘Defend the D’ that you can use in training to encourage this.

Try introducing something in a warm up that will be the one of the principles of your session. Warm-up game: Kick Pass & Go: Introduces give & go and scanning the field. It encourages players to move after they pass the ball. Kick passing is a focus here.

Here’s an introductory game based session that might be useful as you feel your way back into full contact training. 3 games & rotate each group through. Change the dimensions and conditions to suit. Change the numbers of players as we progress past the 29th.

Mayo and Dublin are masters at pressing their opponents. IMO players on the second level and 3rd man runners are vital in beating the press. Here’s a session to work on just that. Focus = practise against the press & working the second level. Animations and games to follow.

As we all get ready to get back to the field for some fun & games, here’s some suggested pitch layouts for different ages and size groups. It might be of some help. Drive link for the PDF:
1/ How can we encourage players to develop the inside runs they make?? Very often we see that ‘straight run’ out to the ball. Try this game. Crossover focuses on delivering the ball & encourages players to explore and rewards them for lateral runs. Animation to follow.
#GAA
Hurling Session: Hurling through the lines. Put the last three games together, and you get a nice session to encourage playing to the second level and support runners.
#GAA
The Bounce = Most underrated skill in GAA. High bounce for extra steps, change of direction bounce, dummy bounce, bounce to fend off a player.
@pilly66
talked about craft work time in a recent webinar. Allow players time to develop skills at the start/end of a session.
#GAA
‘Freeing the D’ is an important attacking principle. Here’s a game that encourages that principle. Simple conditions can be added to encourage purposeful movement & create game progressions. (Limiting a player to two plays at their own discretion to discourage slow play)
#GAA
Theme: Not in possession. Dublin are brilliant at delaying & dictating where the ball goes. They don’t give up the wing or centre. They drop until they can work as a unit. Players always in behind to cover. They pass off men. They rarely jump into the tackle.
#GAA
Building on the precious video clip, here’s a hurling game to work on the themes of playing through the lines, 3rd man runners and players on the second level. Missing Link
