Unsurprisingly, launching a fund is very hard. It requires execution on multiple fronts: building/managing a portfolio, legal/operations buildout, capital raising and building a brand, and then eventually managing a team as the AUM scales. These roles require v diff skillsets.

A good analyst does not automatically convert to a good PM, and being a good PM does not mean you will be a good leader of a business. Managing people is v different from managing a portfolio of stocks. Introspection and recognizing your strengths and weakness is key.

Most likely you will be constantly thinking about the fund and all the things you need to do, probably in an obsessive way. This drive to get the biz going has seen me working 7 days/week, often late into the evening + no holidays. The upside is it doesn't feel like work.

This requires both decisiveness and being strategic to drive forward outcomes. You need to be highly self-motivated because the onus falls entirely on you to will the fund into existence. This creates a mental burden that is very different when working as an employee.

This requires not just buy-in from yourself, but buy-in from your partner/family. You will have less time for them and the stresses of launching a fund can affect the quality of that time you spend together (it can be hard to be present when your mental bandwidth is limited).

The biggest gating factor to launching a fund is capital. Raising capital requires building trust, often with people you've only recently met. This is a VERY different skillset from stock picking and building that trust falls squarely on the CIO.

@NickCowles11 You’re still getting an asset that can compound. Think of if you were to buy the whole biz and what the payback period on your initial capital would be if you bought at a low-DD multiple and the biz continues to grow. Fed actions matter less with that lens.

This is sensible as $U is trying to draw in developers, which learn how to build using their platform tool and are incredibly sticky. They might be undermonetising now, but there are benefits to attracting developers early... 2/

That's a very nice chart re Tinder rev/day accel $MTCH. Tinder price increases seem to be sticking (manageable payer drop off @ -4% & notably they're remaining in the ecosystem). This is big given that Tinder = 56% of revs and even > % of earnings. Narrative inflection underway.
