If Ofsted are continuing with regular inspections on Monday and Tuesday it suggests to me they are more concerned with reaching an inspection target than the welfare of pupils, school staff and inspectors. Can someone
@Ofstednews
explain the rationale please?
If you are a parent and feel your school has done a decent job this week trying to keep education rolling then please drop your headteacher a short note of gratitude. It will mean the world, honest.
Today, I heard the Children's Commissioner explain how schools reached out to check on vulnerable children during the pandemic. She stressed how important this was. Nearly all of the recent Ofsted reports I have read make no mention of this important work.
May I suggest those on the Truss and Johnson honours list are all stood down for two real heroes. I give you Sir Rob Burrow and Sir Kevin Sinfield. These gents make me proud to be British.
What an unbelievable moment 👏
Kevin Sinfield carries his best mate,

Amazing day. Received an MBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace with my wife + two eldest children. The staff were incredibly gracious and I was pleased to explain to the future king what fantastic work the Coop and the Coop Academies Trust do for children in the north.
This is wrong. Can someone at the DfE explain how the actual examination can be used to identify strengths and weaknesses? The results will arrive in the last week of primary schooling with no time for analysis before pupils head to secondary school.
SATs play a key role in helping to identify pupils’ strengths or where they may have fallen behind as they head to secondary school.
Here's everything parents need to know about SATs, including how we develop the tests and why they're important ⬇️
After receiving a WhatsApp message from former HMI I have decided to hang my boots up over the Ofsted inspection issue. I have made clear my deep displeasure based on four family members who are teachers and the many senior staff I know. I have fought the good fight.
I agree and when the dust settles this will be difficult to recover from. In the greatest hour of need Ofsted still phoned schools. I will never forget this and it is seriously challenging my view of Ofsted being a force for good.
Finally, may I ask reporters/ politicians not say children leave primary school unable to read. Very few cannot read and this is usually down to a specific learning need. A small proportion do not read well and struggle with more technical vocabulary and texts. A big difference.
I'm starting to read tweets congratulating students on Oxbridge places. Shouldn't we be congratulating equally students from very tough backgrounds who gain places at less lauded institutions? So, let me start and congratulate Imran on his place at Leicester Uni studying history.
Reading about grade inflation for GCSE and A levels. Gives me impression that exams are intended to NOT deliver the results the students actually achieve so that grade inflation does not occur. We've been down this road before. Exam review, anyone up for it? My hand goes up!
Ofsted shouldn't be in schools at the moment unless there are significant safeguarding concerns. These are not normal times and Ofsted. These stories are coming through frequenrly to me from troubled headteachers, HMCI needs to ensure inspectors are showing tact and compassion.

Ofsted last week was the final straw for me. 27 yrs in education and I’m out. In the past year I’ve lost 3 friends to covid, run myself ragged safeguarding vulnerable kids, been worried sick about losing my parents (1)
I'm delighted to announce I have been appointed independent chair of Blackpool School Improvement Board. I have enjoyed my recent work in the town and I am pleased to be able to continue supporting. There is genuine cooperation and momentum and much positive work going on.
Govt must eliminate external pressures on schools so senior leaders can focus fully on coronavirus issue. Make clear that all Ofsted inspections stop from Monday, no parents' evenings, school productions or trips. We must go to skeleton service and focus on the important stuff.
I've just heard the SofS for Education on Sky News announce that the NTP is making a massive difference already and teachers and parents know this. As the Indep Chair of Blackpool Education Improvement Board I have robust evidence to challenge that assertion.
I agree and when the dust settles this will be difficult to recover from. In the greatest hour of need Ofsted still phoned schools. I will never forget this and it is seriously challenging my view of Ofsted being a force for good.
Ofsted's decision NOT to suspend inspections show how much the chief inspector + her senior managers are out of touch with the reality of schools. They should learn from the example of their Scottish counterparts. Ofsted's disconnect is very serious for its relations with schools
Apparently the Chief Inspector has communicated a reassuring message to her staff. Good you might say but where is the reassuring message to the schools and services Ofsted inspects. The lack of leadership and fronting up is rank poor.
As a colleague I respect today, said, 'The system would close down immediately if all current senior leaders stopped inspecting'. It's simple, isn't it?
I will be reviewing all school inspection reports for last week’s inspections to see the number that mention current staffing shortages due to the pandemic. I suspect it will as high as zero.
Truly humbled by the congrats messages re MBE award. The key to successful leadership is to surround yourself with great family and friends and brilliant work colleagues. who share passion for improving lives of young people who really need our help and support. Thank you all xx
What is happening on teacher recruitment. DfE didnt reaccredit the main teacher provider for Blackpool and Fylde Coast, which gave local people chance to successfully train as teacher. It’s now not awarding decent pay rise for teachers and is seeking overseas teachers to fill gap
What worries me most about how DfE monitors social media is that it appears to be about checking on criticism rather than trying to use it to help improve its work.
Our 40th wedding anniversary today. Can't believe those years just slipped by. I met my wife in a monastery! Don't ask. But she's been my soul mate and best friend ever since. Three fantastic children and four grandchildren emphasises the importance of family on a day like today.
Standing down from the CEO role today will enable me to push even harder for social equality and to campaign for improvement in accountability, Ofsted, funding, community focus and other stuff!!! I am not standing down from campaigning. Far from it.
I've just watched again
@branwenjeffreys
sensitive but hard hitting film on tragic events at Caversham PS. I'd urge followers to set aside 30 mins and decide whether Ofsted is still fit for purpose. Please share and invite to others to ensure wide coverage
Let's be clear. I've inspected since 1995, led delivery of two school inspection Fwks as senior HMI, been CEO of large trust and now supporting colleagues in NW. In that time no HT told me they didn't think schools should be accountable. AS not as aware as she should be. Grim.
Just reread our submission to the Education Select Committee and struck by the power of the final paragraph. 'And finally, after the pandemic the Chief Inspector instructed inspectors to ignore what schools had offered their communities and get back to inspecting
@HarryWorcester
OMG we truly have it the bottom of the barrel when we have tweets like this. I truly dont care what politicians look like cos I'm.more interested in what the say and believe. Truly awful tweet.
This is why Ofsted may be wrong in stating that some schools have focused too much on pastoral matters. Having a bed, food and clothing come first in my book. If govt can't support this happening, what else can a school do?
This number of destitute people is one reason public services are under so much pressure. Schools are having to spend so much time on pastoral support; the NHS is having to deal with the medical impact of this kind of poverty.
Not having a proper safety net is very expensive.
Some subjects to be trimmed to allow more Èng and Ma? If ever you wanted to demotivate the very students you want to return following lockdown this is the strategy to do it. Who is coming up with this sort of stuff?
Heading to Houses of Parliament tomorrow with other Trust colleagues for a NGA ceremony. Our Trust is one of two finalists for the Multi Academy Trust award. Just getting this far is a great reflection of the Governance work undertaken since 2014. Fingers crossed.
Can someone explain why a successful SCITT in the country's most deprived community achieves 91% retention rates over 8 years (and has more than 50% of secondary graduates holding a middle or senior leadership post in local schools) but fails to achieve recent ITE accreditation?
This is tremendously good news for our young people, for the prospects for the country and (with the right resources and lead time to build up to it) for our sixth forms and colleges.
And in spirit of openness, I assume all of this material and how it is delivered will be shared next week so that the sector can see how seriously Ofsted is taking the issues? Film it live. The underlying point is that we all know ONE day's training will not resolve the issues.
Ofsted will delay inspections next week by a day to give lead inspectors urgent extra training on dealing with anxiety and when to pause their visits
It comes after a coroner ruled inspection contributed to Ruth Perry's death
I’m sorry but I need to say this again. I’m a supporter of inspection, less of it, but a supporter. I do not feel regular inspections should be taking place at the moment. The only exception to this is if there is a safeguarding concern.
Last night I had dinner with two former HMI. It was an enjoyable meal and great company. Obviously spoke about Ofsted and we all had predicted long ago that weak leadership and Board would eventually have devastating negative impact on the inspectorate.
I have four family members who are primary teachers. One is a headteacher. They are working their little socks off and any suggestion they are lazy and uncaring is completely wrong. Really fed up with the recent negative narrative from those who don't teach.
It's my final full time working day as CEO at the Trust. I'm handing the baton on to Chris Tomlinson. I'm not disappearing altogether; Co-op Grp want me to play a part time role going forward in work not linked to the Trust. All very exciting. I can't wait.
I am aware of two Primary school inspections this week. One had an intimidating and unreasonable team inspector while the other had no issues at all. It only takes one weak inspector to undermine confidence in inspection teams.
School complaints about bullying Ofsted inspectors soar to ‘ridiculous’ levels in England. School leaders warn Ruth Perry’s “rude and intimidating” inspection far from unusual. One consultant had 3 calls from distressed heads in just one day this week.
I shouldn’t reveal this but with the Coop’s Members’ Council meeting this weekend I thought I would share the news that three more academies are joining our Trust tomorrow. That’s numbers 16, 17 and 18. Proud Director.
This approach really isn't helpful. We've northern students missing chunks of schooling and we still think all we have to do is knock the exam back a few weeks. It is like putting your fingers in your ears and humming and hoping that all will be well. I am not optimistic on this.
Breaking: Most 2021 GCSE and A-level exams pushed back by three weeks, but pupils will still have to sit one maths GCSE paper and one English GCSE paper before May half term
Donated and encouraging others to follow. I am not determining the rights and wrongs of the case but feel it is in the public interests, and as such, we need to ensure the family can make their case without financial penalty.
We are three days away from the beginning of the inquest into Ruth Perry’s tragic death, which followed an OFSTED inspection at her school, Caversham Primary…
Deeply concerned about the list of accredited ITT providers and the gaping holes it will leave in the supply of locally based teachers. Areas like Blackpool and Fylde need great providers like Fylde Coast SCITT. Bizarre decision appears as crazy as more prominent ones this week.
It has taken three years but I’m proud to have connected the brilliant research undertaken at Univ of Bristol with the Northern Powerhouse Partnership so that a different slant on school accountability can be highlighted today.
I can hear my mother telling me to thank Mr Johnson for the U turn but we all know this is down to Marcus Rashford, Co-op and thousands upon thousands of decent, civil and value laden people who knew the initial decision was crazy. So thank you to those thousands and thousands.
Surprised Ofsted didn't anticipate findings of Coroner's work. This would have enabled them to offer training on initial findings/any learning inspectors need to take heed of. Could have offered more intense and specific training early in 2024. Looks a bit thrown together tbh.
I was pleased to explain today to DfE Ministers the undeniable evidence that Blackpool schools are improving. This is happening due to combination of factors but largely a coming together of the Opportunity Area, the Council and the school leaders. The old narrative is misplaced.
I mentioned to my 9 year old granddaughter that I liked her bracelet. She asked if I would like one and what colour? As she handed it over she said she had to exchange her collector cards to get the right colours. I melted. It is not the cost of the gift but the sentiment.
I left Ofsted in 2012 and have never inspected since. I had a major role in the development of four inspection Fwks from 2005. I never felt constrained by any political force or ideology until the year of my departure. The Ofsted today does not resemble the inspectorate I joined.
After watching Panorama tonight on what's been going on at Bright Tribe I thought you would want to know that our trust is the largest business sponsored trust in the country and we don't procure any services or products from our sponsor, The Co-op. Simple!
Is it me, but just walked to the Coop to buy Mothers' Day card and bread and saw groups of teenagers just larking about as if it was the first day of their holiday. Either we are in this together or we are not.
It has been a sham and a cover-up. The most disadvantaged children and young people have suffered the most from the pandemic but also from the current Framework.
Earlier this year in April in a BBC interview the Chief Inspector of Ofsted Amanda Spielman saidthe inspection had been carried out professionally and sensitively. Yesterday, the coroner said it had been at times "rude and intimidating" and lacked fairness.
In recent presentations to headteachers I have highlighted the impending cliff edge over funding. I have asked them to reach out to their MPs and write directly to the Sec of State. Some headteachers have called this approach too political and have criticised me.
Delighted to announce that 23 Yr 10 Trust students have been accepted on to the Universify summer prog at Oxford University in Aug. Up from 8 the previous yr. A week of lectures, seminars and visits. The target is for our Leeds and Wirral students to join in 2020. Proud Director.
Sadly, Sir Kevin Collins understood this but was ignored by the government. When children needed more investment after the pandemic they got little of worth other than tutoring.
“We are now seeing the pastoral impact of the pandemic in full force: attendance is extremely low. We have learnt that the manifestations of trauma, grief & disillusionment don’t appear straight away. It takes time for the impact.. to come to the surface.”
Really pleased to share the news that my work for the Northern Powerhouse Partnership will continue with the backing of the Co-op. So much to get stuck into around levelling up, skills, apprenticeships and post Covid recovery in the north. Looking forward to it.
I'll be reflecting on my former role as CEO of Coop Academies Trust, the issues I should have tackled earlier, the importance of comms strategy and the need for rock hard values and principles when I speak to
#trustleaders
at the CEO North West meeting tomorrow in Chester.
There is a bit of contradiction in the levelling up paper isn't there? It's ok for 90% to be expected to reach expected standard but this isn't allowed to happen for GCSE and A levels. Aren't we baking in a decline in pupil performance at KS3-5?
Big night tomorrow. Trust’s staff recognition evening at Etihad Stadium. We won’t be using the stands, we’re not that big, but will have full access to pitch side area. Over 150 expected from all 18 academies with five special awards based on The Ways of Being Co-op.
"I believe that there is a need in education for the ‘good-enough’ teacher, particularly in response to the tyranny of the ‘outstanding’ teacher (which is a form of perfectionism, in my opinion). The good-enough teacher goes their best to care for & educate their class…" 1/2
HMCI's annual report gives the impression that while schools were facing extreme recruitment problems inspectors were more interested in the curriculum. If you haven't got the teaching staff you don't really have a functioning curriculum. Can we begin to reset Ofsted altogether?
Our 11 year old granddaughter has experienced prep for SATs for most of this academic year. As the Minister states, this is only relevant for determining how strong the school is academically. The children are definitely suffering cos of the accountability system.
@Iainrhall
My own, in very good schools, have had pretty much constant mocks from year 10 onwards. Exams are the least worst method of summative assessment, but the constant prep for them sucks the soul from learning
Reading some teachers explain on Twitter that their inspection wasn’t too bad in 2019 just misses the point entirely. It is about current priorities and my view is that Ofsted is an unnecessary distraction atm.
Just completed the Mcr 10k. The seventh time, and the by far the hardest, and the warmest. Thank you to family, friends and colleagues who have supported the funding raising for Diabetes UK. Over £300 raised. I will match that so £600 to help find a cure for Type 1.
On a trip to Denmark in the summer, a university lecture explained that the heavy investment in education was essential for the future growth of his country. 'The youth are the most valuable resource we've got', he said. Im not quite feeling this in the UK at the moment.
I have read over 50 recently published reports and I am convinced they do not accurately reflect the overall effectiveness of those schools. Deeply disturbing realisation for me about the impact of the current Fwk.
My daughter's classroom at 7.51am. Imagine having to manage an Ofsted as well as the 30 children in her class in these conditions. Her school hasn't had the call but I feel for those that have.
Can I just explain to the DfE that some children will like an online tutor and some will not. Some will prefer face to face whereas some will not. Some will respond well to a mentor while some will not. Some areas will find it hard to find a good tutor/mentor and some will not.
I am delighted to be working with Nicole on her work experience from
@MCMAcademy
. We've been working through work experience applications. Proud Director
I understand the pressure DfE officials are under but why did they not alert the profession in advance that they would be releasing additional guidance? They could have made clear what the focus of the guidance would be. Publishing Friday evening with no warning is poor tbh.
I posted a tweet last week encouraging parents to thank schools for their efforts. It was viewed more times than other tweet I had posted. 99.9% of responses were positive. It made me proud to be part of the teaching profession.
Had some free time today with only one of our gorgeous grandchildren to care for. While she slept I wrote a think piece on a refocused Ofsted undertaking inspections with greater collaboration with schools. I have much more on the topic, will share in time
Ive chatted to HTs and CEOs today and message that's coming across clearly is they are hanging on in there, but only just. What the government announces shortly on exams is going to illustrate whether they understand the current situation in many schools and whether they care.
The reality of my departure from my job hits home today as we welcome Chris Tomlinson, Designate CEO for two days of early induction. He's visiting all our locations, attending SLT meeting and having a meal with the chair and me tonight. He's a strong replacement.
I'm feeling mega proud to be associated with this wonderful provision. Always going the extra mile and putting children, young people and their families first. Well done Frank's Place.
I have a sense some in govt think those in educ just want more money for pupils so we can have an easier life. They don't understand we are truly ambitious for pupils and genuinely feel pain when govt fail to deliver again. The pupils are our country's future. It's not about us!
Telling schools they must stay open may at the moment be lawful but it's also neglectful and dangerous. What is the point in undertaking risk assessments locally if govt decides they are going to ignore those assessments. Northern schools can tell you what that feels like.
When do you know that a former weak academy is improving? When attendance rises by 1.2% for all pupils and 2.4% for pupil premium pupils, persistent absence falls by 7% and there have been no exclusions in the past term. Well done Co-op Academy
@ParklandPr
. Proud Director.
It is so predictable seeing government buildings lit up in blue and yellow but that same government unwilling to offer refuge to those attacked by Putin's army. We are not up to the standards of other nations. Sadly, not so Great Britain.
I was HMI for 11 years and it was incredibly rare for a report to be pulled in this way. Either the inspection team were poor or they were put in an invidious position by the poorly constructed Fwk they were expected to use or a combination. Ofsted should explain.
In a letter to parents today the school confirmed the report had been withdrawn and a full inspection will follow. The school told the BBC it will make no further comment in the meantime
First day as the former CEO of the Co-op Academies Trust ended with a short video arriving from pupils at Co-op Academy Nightingale. I love the comment from one who said 'Thank you, but now you are too old!
No HT or Trust CEO I have met has suggested that accountability is not important. It comes with the job but Ofsted's role in the accountability framework needs revising and improving. The best organisations regularly look in the mirror and reflect on their work with an open mind.
On
@BBCWomansHour
@Emmabarnett
reads out a message from parent saying Ofsted reports are helpful & asks if headteachers don't like to be held to account. Amanda Spielman says things are different after the pandemic but accountability has to happen
Today I visited Highfield Leadership Academy in Blackpool. Members of the DfE ministerial team were present. The 40 or so students we heard from were amazing. Only regret is that the teaching staff couldn't hear the glowing comments students made about them. Proud beyond words.
I'm in Nottingham. Have been given opportunity to explain why all those who work in schools must serve the entire community of children and not just those that happen to attend a particular school. I will tweet later a few quotes and a personal reaction
as if the pandemic never happened. This meant that reports that should have highlighted mental health concerns, recruitment and retention issues, limited applications to senior roles, shortage of non-teaching expertise, funding problems and effectiveness of catch-up funding
All of the 6 houses in our close came out and clapped, banged drums and said hello to each other. We also thanked the community nurse opposite who felt she hadn't done much yet but we were grateful for her profession. Humbling stuff tbh.
