Academia: Wow, we're still struggling with bringing BIPOC into many areas of academia. Why?
BIPOC: Give us money? Few of us have generational wealth or savings & we're saddled with comparatively more student debt.
Academia: It's a mystery... Anyway here's a diversity workshop.
Is there a Chrome extension for academics who are in writing mode that tells you, "Hey, you've already got this paper that you're trying to load open in 3 out of your 68 tabs, you dumbass."
It's Day 1 of

Here's me out in the field casually freaking out over these 540 million year old burrows made by worm-like things.
Absolutely OBSESSED with this footage from the Jurassic Oceans exhibit at the
@FieldMuseum
of a crocodile punting itself off the bottom with its hindlimbs. I've never seen this locomotor behavior before and I want to KNOW MORE
Normal whales when evolving: Alright we're gonna shorten and stiffen up a bit to be more efficient in swimming.
Basilosaurus: I'm going to be snake.
Normal whales: We don't recommend tha--
Basilosaurus: Ssssssssss
I'm always so unnerved to be reminded that the biggest Tiktaalik specimens are like 9 feet long.
I don't think we'd be able to punt it back into the water very easily.
Fun fact: Did you know that mosasaur fossils have been discovered that exhibit paleopathologies (diseases) of the bends aka decompression sickness?
Goes to show that evolution doesn't necessarily lead to perfection.
Even for a giant marine reptile.
It's funny that people think this was a cosplay. It genuinely wasn't. I was given the red bandana when I got to our camp, bought this blue shirt cuz it was the only color in my size, and just got my prescription sunglasses for fieldwork.
This is accidental paleo perfection.
Ah I see people are having that medical Dr. vs non-medical Dr. discussion again after some trash article. So I defer to this educational video again. (As always no offense to dentists)
Is there a name for taxa that appear suddenly and last for a fleeting amount of time in the fossil record? If not they should be called Cotton-Eye Joe Taxa because
Where did they come from?
Where did they go?
Anyway, all scientific papers are simply progress reports on topics in a field.
They're not truths. They're not final words. Especially in paleontology. They're efforts of understanding-- of our natural world.
I think I became an official Paleontologist today with this personally ENGRAVED Estwing rock pick. Made in Rockford, Illinois. Home of the Burpee Museum.
Thank you,

Even though there are differences in habitat and geography, all tapir calves, no matter the species, begin life looking a lot like brown-and-beige-striped watermelons. Why? This pattern and color combination serves as the perfect camouflage as they explore their forest home.
