More railway action under Highbury Fields. British Rail used to use the tunnel under the Fields to divert trains from Scotland and the north to Liverpool Street, if Kingโ€™s Cross was closed. Last night @LNER tested an Azuma train on the route to see if they can do it again.

Itโ€™s not a particularly busy evening and the weather isnโ€™t brilliant, but Highbury Corner square is full of people strolling with shopping or kids, sitting, walking back from work, chattingโ€ฆ hell there were even some kids playing on the grass. This, or four lanes of traffic.

. @TfL have still done nothing to protect pedestrians from motorists routinely crossing on green pedestrian light at the corner of Corsica St and St Paulโ€™s Road. A bus and two cars crossed on green this time. Itโ€™s dangerous and @tfl need to sort it out urgently.

Opposite 12 Highbury Place, c1910 & 2020. Building wasnโ€™t possible here until the 90s as it sits on a railway tunnel. New houses built c1997 to continue the terrace. In 1910 it was home to a florist & a cobbler. A pile of cobbles outside the bank ready for work at Highbury Corner

The woman who closed Highbury Corner: after 60 years of the gyratory, Kelly Alavoine, traffic manager of TGL Group, personally shut down the Highbury Corner roundabout for good at 12:45am this evening, and will reopen two-way traffic at 7am. #HighburyCorner #HighburyCornerLive

Islington is to create a network of designated spaces for dockless bikes to park in. Anyone using a dockless e-bike must leave it in one of these spaces or they will continue to be charged for their journey. To be piloted in 21 trial areas including Cally.

Another local landmark in the sunshine - Islington Central Library, 1900. Thereโ€™s such a wealth of superb architecture here - people really were trying to make Holloway Road a grand London boulevard before it was surrendered to heavy traffic from the 1960s.

The saddest news. Mr Bhatt was one of the most relentlessly cheerful people around, and one of the hardest working. I stopped regularly to buy Private Eye (and things for the kids), and he thought it was hilarious when I appeared in it. Sincerest condolences to his family.

@BarryCraig @TfLBusAlerts @drewsonix Hi, @TfL @TfLBusAlerts - I agree the trial is really awful. The settings are wrong, the announcements are mistimed, and donโ€™t help anyone anyway. Teaching drivers not to accelerate away from stops as people are trying to find seats, on the other hand, really would improve safety.

BUS 19 SAVED! Highbury and Battersea stay connected to the West End. Thanks to everyone who campaigned on this, and thanks a lot to @Heidi_LDN and @TfL for listening. It makes a big difference for a lot of people. 5,200 a day, to be precise!

Very sad news indeed - after 27 years on Upper Street, The Only Place for Pictures will close permanently on Sat 27 January because of an unaffordable rent increase. Their Palmers Green shop will remain open. Much love to David and colleagues. @theonlyplace

Just about every big community event Iโ€™ve attended, every charity fundraiser in Islington Iโ€™ve been involved in, every fair on the Fields, Gunnersaurus/Jerry has been there, entertaining the kids and livening things up. I totally get why people are upset about this. I am too.

Drivers jumping the red light eastbound at #HighburyCorner onto St Paul's Road and driving straight across the pedestrian crossing at Hen & Chickens, while green man is showing. I see this almost every day.

People are complaining that Highbury Corner is gridlocked โ€˜all dayโ€™, traffic trailing back to the Alwyne, etc etc. It isnโ€™t. Here it is, just now. Itโ€™s busy, but trafficโ€™s flowing and minimal waits at the lights. About the same as with the roundabout.

Big news is elsewhere today & LTNs not the only issue. But I have to say, on big turn-outs, the Labour & Green vote is absolutely -crushing- for opposition to LTNs โ€˜on principleโ€™. Hope we can now listen to each other to make better streets work as well as possible for everyone.

Highbury Corner/Highbury Place in around 1900. The horse-drawn bus is the General from Highbury Barn to Angel Islington - HB&AI for short, a precursor of the no 19, which started running on its current route in 1906. (1/2)
