We have been hated before. We have been targeted before. We have been here before. We won then. We will win now.
If the far right and their friends in public office want to start a culture war on 2SLGBTQIA+ issues, we will rise to the challenge. And we will win.
#NewProfilePic
“Girl, 9, accused of being trans at Kelowna track meet”
This is where anti-trans hate leads. It is an attack on all forms of gender non-conformity, ending in the re-imposition of regressive gender norms and threatening progress on women’s rights.
Trans people in 🇨🇦 are scared. Terrified. Hate is rising and no one is doing anything about it.
Y’all wanna pretend “Canada is different”, but we aren’t.
We’re seeing what’s happening in the US. We’re seeing the warning signs of the same here. But no one is listening.
"This has destroyed our beautiful daughter's confidence, and she was inconsolably crying during this whole event and continued once it was over and we were leaving.”
A world where young girls are verbally assaulted for … having a pixie cut?
“Star said the man's wife then started calling her "a genital mutilator, a groomer, and a pedophile."”
“Star says the man then carried on to demand certification to prove that her daughter was born female.”
Is this the world we want to live in?
I deserve it all? So you think it’s okay to encourage people to kill themselves? To call people slurs and share their private information? This is abhorrent.
Matt Walsh is trying to force trans people out of public life.
Those who push anti-trans hate want to roll us back to an idealized version of the past. One where women are forced to look and act a certain way. One where gender conformity is enforced through hate, shame and stigma.
Fighting anti-trans hate is key to a feminist future.
TEACHING STUDENTS ABOUT DIVERSE FAMILIES AND QUEER PEOPLE IS NOT GROOMING.
The far right is lying to you. They are spinning a false narrative about what is happening in our schools.
No one is trying to convert anyone, but queer kids are still being bullied in our schools.
My heart goes out to this young girl. She didn’t deserve this, nor did her family.
Those pushing, amplifying and condoning anti-trans hate are responsible for this.
From Premier Higgs to Jordan Peterson to Rebel News and countless others.
We need to stop pretending this but isn’t a Canadian problem too.
Anti-trans hate is infiltrating the mainstream, jeopardizing all the progress we’ve made.
When will our governments
#Act4QueerSafety
? When will we - as a society - categorically reject this hateful agenda?
For the last week, I’ve had my twitter locked while I made sure I was safe and cared for myself. But now, I want to tell you what it’s like to have the entire force of the anti-trans ecosystem pointed directly at you.
TW: transphobia, transmisogyny and hate & threats
This. Is. Fucking. Disgusting.
Y’all think it’s not happening here?!
WAKE UP. Stop pretending we’re different.
They are coming for queer and trans kids. We must fight like hell for them.
Shoutout to the disorganized anti-trans bigots in Regina who organized a protest of me speaking at the YWCA event tonight and…
Protested at the wrong venue 😂
(CW: transphobia)
Three guys in a car yelled “what the fuck is that” and “kill yourself” as they drove past my spouse and I while we were walking home from the grocery.
Just another unpleasant incident on an ever lengthening list of unpleasant incidents. Happy Pride Month.
A strategy of the far right re: trans people is to force trans people out of public life by sending such a tsunami of hate our way that we come to loathe ourselves.
We can’t and won’t let them succeed. Transness is beautiful. Trans people are beautiful.
Transgender women are:
- a tiny fraction of the population
- much more likely to live in poverty and be homeless
- much more likely to be survivors of sexual violence
And Pierre Poilievre is punching down on us to appease far right radicals in his base.
Happy
#TransDayofVisability
! I have a love/hate relationship with today, especially given the price I paid for being visible earlier this month.
So my message today is: we deserve more than visibility. We deserve liberation. Health. Fair pay. Housing. Safety. Rights. Happiness.
My papa dropped off a very kind note to me from a woman who goes to his church ❤️
I have a received ton of wonderful messages of support from folks. I haven’t managed to reply to many of them, but I will.
I’m not a celebrity. I’m not a journalist. I have 14k followers and publish the occasional oped - usually in my city’s paper.
And I’m being targeted by a transphobic shithead who’s fans are fascist, misogynistic far right extremists.
This is life as a trans woman with any kind of visibility right now. Demonization and dehumanization. Sustained campaigns of hate.
They want to force us out of public life.
I’ve been targeted with hate before, but never like this. I’m still reeling from what I’ve been subjected to in the last week.
But I’m not going anywhere. I will keep fighting this fight - for women and girls, for trans people, and everyone who believes in social justice.
Teaching kids about diverse genders, sexualities + families is not grooming.
Performers dressed up in costumes, reading books & singing songs is not grooming.
Policies that allow trans kids to be themselves at school is not grooming nor an infringement on “parent rights”
I go on private for a week because I’m being mobbed with hate and hate mail. I come back on, share some examples of what I’ve had to deal with, and Matt Walsh stomps on me for the second time.
I keep opening Twitter and hoping I’ll find the right words to respond to what happened at the University of Waterloo, where a man stabbed 2 students and a professor in a gender studies class.
I am at a loss. I’m scared. I’m worried.
I’m calling on our friends, allies and families to speak up. I’m calling on every organization and individual committed to social justice to act now.
I’m calling on our elected officials to speak up and act now to fight rising anti-queer snd anti-trans hate.
I am calling on the Government of Canada to redouble their efforts to support 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
No more minimal commitments. We need leadership. Urgently.
Expand the 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan. Ensure we are included meaningfully in the upcoming anti-hate strategy.
To my trans sisters, brothers and siblings: please take care of yourselves. Hate is rising but we aren’t alone in this fight. We have allies and accomplices on our side.
It is hard right now, but we will get through this.
What an incredible day. Thank you, Ottawa, for showing up in record numbers to celebrate pride.
Thank you,
@FierteCapPride
for choosing me as your Grand Marshal ❤️🏳️🌈
I will never stop fighting for queer and trans people.
Where are our governments? Why aren’t they acting? Where are our allies? Why is it - time and again - left to us, under-resourced, disproportionately poor, trans people, to fight back?
And why are we always alone?
Let me be crystal clear: Premier Moe is weaponizing the public’s lack of familiarity with trans people to set a terrifying precedent:
Overruling the fundamental human rights protections laid out in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
I am one of few trans advocates in Canada with a (moderate) platform and (limited) presence in media
They’re coming for me because if they can hound me off of this platform + out of the public eye, it will deter other trans people from speaking out
Not that I’m going anywhere.
To everyone else:
Support your local queer and trans organizations.
Fight hate and raise awareness however you can.
Demand more from your elected officials on queer and trans issues.
We had a record breaking 1500-2000 people at the Ottawa March for Trans Rights. Thank you, Ottawa, for showing up for trans kids and all trans people.
Together, we will win a future free of transphobia.
I ran into
@PierrePoilievre
at the Halifax airport yesterday. I introduced myself. We spoke briefly. I expressed concern re: rising hate, what’s at stake with anti-🏳️⚧️ rhetoric, & how such rhetoric is not good for 🇨🇦 - a diverse country where we care about & protect human rights.
The term “gender ideology” is a homophobic and transphobic dogwhistle.
It is absolutely disgusting to see the leader of the Conservative Party echoing this fundamentally hateful rhetoric.
My deadname was likely found through an old IG post. I changed my name over 6 years ago.
No, I didn’t go back and delete all posts with my deadname. I didn’t feel the necessity. How wrong I was.
As a bisexual trans woman with a homosexual male origin story and an ongoing flirtation with non-binary identity…
The way bigots try to segment off different types of queers is not how our communities function, nor is it how systems of oppression operate.
Pierre Poilievre has publicly voiced his support for banning transgender women from women’s spaces.
This is an assault on the rights of transgender women. This will result in more homeless trans women and more trans people subjected to hate.
This is a war on trans rights.
I am worried straight and cis people - and even some in our own communities - don’t realize the precarity of progress for 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 people.
They imagine the progress we’ve made couldn’t possibly be put at risk. They couldn’t be more wrong.
Every major feminist organization, most local feminist groups, and the overwhelming majority of feminist activists in Canada want nothing to do with TERFs.
TERFs don’t speak for feminists, and they certainly don’t speak for most women.
The Conservative Party just passed this policy at their convention in Quebec City today. If enacted under a CPC government, it would ban trans women from women’s bathrooms, shelters, etc.
This is the CPC, as a party, voicing its opposition to 2SLGBTQ+ rights. This is terrifying.
Since early March, I’ve been bombarded with thousands of hateful tweets, DMs & emails
I've been called a tr*nny, groomer, pedophile & f*g. Encouraged to suicide & more
All for being a trans woman in a Canadian ad campaign to uplift women & girls for

LGBTQ+ rallies to be held across Canada, billed as largest since marriage equality: Their message is crucial now because "far-right groups and cynical politicians" have spread misinformation about the LGBTQ+ community, says Fae Johnstone.

I came out as trans seven years ago today. Wild to look back and see how much I’ve changed.
7 years being the real me. 7 years of authenticity. 7 years of freedom after too many years hurting and hiding.
✨🏳️⚧️Happy tranniversary to me! 🏳️⚧️✨
My inclusion in this ad, as just 1 of 5 young female change makers featured to celebrate women and give young girls positive possibility models, spurred an international campaign to boycott Hersheys.
This happened the same week that a high profile republican called for the “eradication of transgenderism” from public life.
That same extremist did a segment on me the day before he gave the speech containing that quote.
I will not be bullied. You can throw as much hate as you want my way. I’ll persevere.
I walk in the footsteps of trans elders who went through hell to give us a better future.
I’ll keep fighting. No matter what. Because the future they envisioned is one we deserve. All of us.
Anyone else notice which leader of a major political party didn’t say a single thing about the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia yesterday?
And hasn’t condemned rising hate against 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 people? But is happy to talk about how Canada’s too « woke »?
Far right media across North America tore into me with zeal. Hundreds of articles and clips. Millions of media impressions.
Personal info going back years has been dug up and shared widely.
I had my deadname outed by a figurehead of the far-right in a video with over 100k views
The hatemongers at Rebel News just launched a petition calling on YWCA Regina to “Fire Fae”. They misgendered me and published my deadname.
The far right is targeting trans people and trying to force us out of public life. But I’m not going anywhere.
Gender-affirming care, including for youth, is regulated by professional standards that all doctors and healthcare providers are bound by.
It is evidence-based healthcare supported by medical associations across North America.
I have had disgusting memes and caricatures made of me. I’ve had my privacy and that of my family violated.
I’ve had conspiracies and blatant lies shared about me across social media platforms.
My life will never be the same.
I would like everyone to recall, quite simply, that trans people are generally poor, more likely to be homeless, and experience a whole lot of hate for being ourselves.
This is the community that the Conservative Party of Canada is picking on.
Because they can.
Parents should be as involved as possible in the lives of their children. 1000%.
BUT that doesn’t mean overriding the privacy and autonomy of young people.
Mandating parental consent for trans students will harm the most vulnerable trans kids: those without supportive parents.
It’s the last day of Pride Month. This is your reminder that, especially amidst rising hate, queer and trans people need your allyship year round.
Support local 🏳️🌈 activists and organizations. Show up to rallies and counter protests. Raise the bar and call on governments to act.
Does
@ABDanielleSmith
understand that 24-40% of homeless youth are 2SLGBTQIA+?
Your policies are going to cause irreparable harm to some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
Shame on you.
Trans people aren’t trying to take the word “women” away from anyone.
You can call your sister your sister, your mum your mum, your wife your wife.
All we are saying is that, in medical contexts and a few others, we should use gender neutral language. It’s more accurate.
This is an absolutely appalling tweet from Jon Kay.
1) it was a cool shirt - not a threat against anyone.
2) to insinuate I was “physically aroused” is disgusting. I wore tight pants and didn’t wear a gaff.
3) Imagine the outrage if he was talking about a cis woman like this.
I don’t expect folks to understand the details and nuance of trans health - or why trans people need gender-affirming healthcare.
What I do need folks to understand is the dangerous precedent of a government banning access to an evidence-based health intervention.
Tucker Carlson made a quip about Trudeau being in the closet. The audience ate it up.
Textbook homophobia: using the insinuation someone is gay to portray them as weak, effeminate & worthy of mockery.
And tonight he’s on stage in convo with the Premier of Alberta.
School boards, parents and queer advocates forced Premier Ford to back off when he tried to mess with 🏳️🌈-inclusive comprehensive sexuality education in 2019.
We will do it again, if we have to.
Also, Tucker Carlson doesn’t have a job anymore — but do you know who still does?
@FaeJohnstone
As a reminder, Carlson did extensive anti-Trans coverage when Fae was one of five women on Hershey chocolate Canadas’ IWD campaign.
Exciting news to share: As of today, I am a registered social worker! I learned a ton through my BSW and MSW at
@CUSocialWork
, and am honoured to call myself a social worker.
It is okay to be scared right now. It feels like we’re on the precipice of regression on queer rights and so much more. And, if you’re like me, you probably feel powerless to stop it.
But you aren’t. We aren’t. We have been here before, and won. We will win again. Together.
We need to scale up the fight for trans kids in New Brunswick. This is an existential threat. It is the first legislative volley in a country wide attack on trans kids.
Your organization needs to speak out. We. Cannot. Let. This. Stand.
Trans kids needs us right now.
Today seems like a good day to make fascists, misogynists and transphobes lose their minds. So cool to have met my ginger sister
@atRachelGilmore
at the Ottawa March for Trans Rights today ❤️
Together for trans rights and against misogyny 💪🏻
My trans visibility gets me threats and hate mail. My visibility as a trans advocate comes at an immense cost to my mental health.
I dream of a 🇨🇦 where being yourself and advocating for your community doesn’t mean having a target on your back.
#TransDayOfVisibility
IM NOT CRYING YOU ARE. This is leadership. Thank you,
@WabKinew
, for showing us love and unity as a counterpoint to the hate and division of conservative politicians.
At least 22 anti-🏳️🌈 protests at schools and school boards across Canada since March 2023. SINCE MARCH 2023.
The far right is organized, well-funded and coming for the safe spaces our queer youth need.
We cannot keep ignoring this. Politicians cannot keep ignoring this.
5000+ people attended the Montreal Trans March yesterday, denouncing rising hate, demanding trans rights, and rallying for a safer, more equitable future for trans people.
Honoured to have spoken at the rally, and helped lead the March through downtown MTL.
Being trans isn’t something you “catch”. We aren’t an infection. We aren’t a contagion.
This is part of a dangerous agenda to pathologize transgender people, restrict our freedom and deny us healthcare we need.
“Our naïveté about Canada’s supposed progressiveness blinds us to how the anti-trans movement exemplifies the broad coalition the far right has built and its ability to influence our social and political spheres.”
My first time in
@thewalrus
.
Shame on Premier Ford. Schools are not indoctrinating students.
This “parental rights” rhetoric is just a good slogan hiding an anti-trans and social conservative agenda.
And - right now - it’s a desperate distraction from his scandal-plagued track record.
#onpoli
New direct messaging from Premier Ford at Fordfest here in Kitchener: “Parents rights. They need to be..informed when they [students] make a decision. It’s not up to teachers and school boards to indoctrinate our kids. I can’t even figure out what school boards do anymore”
#onpoli
Imagine, as a 16 year old, struggling with a debilitating medical issue that makes every day hard to cope with, and it’s illegal for your doctor to prescribe you the medication you need.
That’s what the CPC policy, if enacted, would do to trans youth.
In Ontario: Kids learn about sexual orientation in grade 6. And about gender in grade 8. Maybe the school does an assembly about respecting diversity for pride month. And maybe a school rainbow club hosts a bake sale.
That’s pretty much it.
Facts over fear.
A stranger just aggressively screaming “ew” at me from their car while I was on a walk in my neighbourhood.
Experiences like this are all too common for trans folks as is. It’ll only get worse if we don’t confront rising hate.
We are being outgunned. We are losing these battles. With kids lives at stake. Trans folks can’t win these battles alone.
I need folks to finally wake up to what’s going on: a full-on assault on the rights and freedoms of vulnerable young people.
Tap in. We need you now.
Poilievre could’ve spoken out about the importance of acceptance and inclusion for queer and trans Canadians.
He could have also stayed silent.
Instead, he weighed in, amplifying a slogan pushed by homophobic far right groups.
In March, I was subjected to one of the most concentrated online hate campaign targeting a trans person in 🇨🇦 history.
Today, alongside 80+ partners, I’m calling on the federal government to address rising anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hate.
Sign our petition:
Case in point: Caryma searches her own name so frequently she saw this - through a mutual block - in under an hour and is already trying to spin a narrative. 🙄
I’m fighting for queer and trans rights. What the hell are you doing, for anyone, Caryma?
This sends a message to every homophobe in hockey that they’re welcome to keep being homophobes, to keep bullying the queer kids in the locker rooms, to keep forcing queer people out of sport.
Shame on the NHL.
The NHL clarified today that there is a league wide ban on Pride Tape by any player in games, warm-ups, or practices.
It's 2023 and there's now a new "Don't Say Gay" set of rules issued by a major international sports league.
I literally cannot.
We don’t require parental consent for a student to come out as gay at school.
We shouldn’t require parental consent for a trans student to be out, and referred to correctly, at school.
Students should be supported to come out at home or at school if and when they are ready.
I married the love of my life,
@discowormparty
, a year ago today ❤️
I am so grateful to have met someone who brings so much into my life, who I can learn and grow with, who I can support, and who supports me, through thick and thin.
Here’s to many more years together ❤️
Sheila Gunn Reid and Rebel News, after publishing… 5 articles, 3 videos, a petition about me and otherwise firing up their hateful audience against me, disclosed the hotel I was staying at in a video posted to Sheila’s Twitter yesterday afternoon.
What. The. Hell.
A digital world makes it easy to lose sight of people’s humanity. TERFs long ago lost sight of mine.
I’ve never mocked a TERFs appearance. I’ve never violated a TERFs privacy. I’ve never encouraged my followers to target a TERF.
They’ve done all of the above and more to me.
When I was growing up as a closeted queer kid who loved hockey, it would’ve made my day to see teams wearing Pride jerseys. Would’ve sent a powerful message to my teammates too.
Shame on the NHL Board of Governors for caving to bigotry.
From NHL Board of Governors: teams will not wear specialty jerseys in warmups next season. Also: Cap, Ottawa, Arizona and other topics. With Commissioner Gary Bettman here —
I am so tired y’all. Every day, the hate piles on. Every day, it becomes more normalized.
Queer and trans people - like everyone else - deserve the freedom to be ourselves, to be treated with dignity and safe in our communities.
Speak up with us. We can’t do this alone.
We are defiant in the face of hate and regression. We aren’t scared. We’ve fought this fight for decades. And we’re going to keep doing what we’ve been doing for decades: winning.
Happy

Queer and trans friends: it’s been a rough week. Lots of fear in the air. And Poilievre just added to everyone’s worry.
Take a deep breath, spend some time with friends/family/pets, and have hope.
Equality will win through.
It is rough right now, but We Will Win.
