I don't mind the rain. I don't mind people laughing at my socks. I don't mind not having a shower at work. I do mind not feeling safe riding in to Sheffield daily. I do mind that 25 yrs after working promoting cycling things are worse. I do mind worrying about my kids on bikes.

Met a lad in the Peaks walking home with a flat. Gave him a tube and lent him tools/air. He offered money and I said no, but if he wanted to drop a tube off here, that would be fine, but no problems if not. Came in today - lovely lad over here from China studying robotics😎

Am reading Animal Farm. When the pigs start sleeping in beds the other animals say that one of 7 rules was no animals in beds. They are told by Squealer they remember wrongly - just not beds with sheets. And that pigs need good rest to help with all thinking they do for everyone.

Cuts to Council budgets are a scandal. They get little attention, very few MPs are really interested. In fact one of the only things the centre really like to devolve is budget reductions. But, business rates are a contributing factor to the slow death of the British High Street.

17 yrs ago, almost to the day, my mum died. Today I'll cook pineapple upside-down pudding from her Bero recipe book, using same dish we used when I baked with her on Sundays (Rod Stewart "Atlantic Crossing" blaring out on kitchen speakers). Gluten-free for one of 17 yr old twins.

Just cycled down past @GreystonesPri and through their morning drop off road closure. What a delightful atmosphere - people chatting in road, younger siblings scooting. I defy anyone to visit that and think the car jammed frenzy is preferable. Roll it out to all schools now💚

I find this frustrating ... it's not is it. And I find a Green Councillor saying it is disappointing. Cycling levels v low and public transport expensive and unreliable. I love Sheffield and everything, but let's not kid ourselves.

Lessons learned since we re-opened after lockdown: 1. Sheffield people are sensible, kind and flexible. 2. Forgetting to social distance is a thing and nothing odd about gently reminding people. 3. So many people go out their way to support local, independent businesses.

We are opening tomorrow, but with restricted hours. It's more of a trial openning. If my staff don't feel safe or we think the public are not safe we will re-think. We have done some role play to choreograph distancing, which was useful, but until actually open hard to judge.

The whole Snake Pass stuff is doing my head in. My view is people should not break law, if it is wholly and legally closed to cycling - which is obviously not clear cut. But, what is not in doubt is that it demonstrates the huge untapped demand for safe places to cycle in UK.

Today was one of those days when our commitment to unhurried and thorough eye testing paid dividends. Last appointment of day - 18yr old, regular check up and no symptoms. Often dismissed as easy/quick one in some environments. Today was an emergency hospital referral.

It's drivers in queues flashing people as it makes no odds to their journey time and those flashed drivers thinking that the flashing means that they don't have to check it is safe. As if the flashing indicates someone else is responsible. Not your fault remotely.

People cycling on footpath at Higger - do you know it's not allowed or know, but don't care 🤔 It's behaviour like this that gives others who ride off road (like me and friends/family) legally a bad name 😐 And undoes great work that people like @ridesheffield do.

Reflecting on the day at work - saw 5 people for eye exams - one per hour and every one was a pleasure. Other opticians laugh at our low volumes and then moan about seeing people every 15-20 minutes, as if there is no choice. There is a choice of course ...
