En route Belfast. Apart from Connolly station being more depressing than any I’ve seen outside island, worst thing to see was the extreme poverty around Abbey St and generally destitute feeling & appearance of area-far worse than late 80s when we were one of poorest states in EU

Lazy & inaccurate phraseology on @BBCNews saying SF’s success marks end of unionist ‘domination’ for a century. GFA was about consociational power sharing- between unionist & nationalist parties & others - not domination. Seems people have lost sight of GFA over past 24 yrs.

@MaryMcAuliffe4 I didn’t take that interpretation at all. I thought Eoin O’Malley was implicitly reflecting on how hard it was for his own father who had senior roles in government & led the PDS. I didn’t see it as a gendered comment.

It’s to @dfatirl and @irishgov credit that from the start, 2016, they foresaw the challenges, (though probably not to this extreme) & possibility that NIrl could be pawn in trade talks. Hence backstop in original Protocol -no change to any border, sea or land.

This is puzzling on Irl’s Future: ‘Its profile is nationalist to unionist eyes, despite its non-partisan stance & credentials, because it chooses unity over any existing or renewed U.K. future…’. But surely that is partisan on the constitutional issue?

@AndrewPRLevi That’s very moving. I hope he found a peaceful life in his adulthood. Frightening times now.

Appalling comment explaining Harris’ attitude to UI: ‘Greystones is an outlier in one respect. It’s the most Protestant town in the south, with a Church of Ireland population of nearly 10%’. Alot to learn about here-that way of thinking long since gone

One of the less headline grabbing consequences of Brexit is that Irish gov reopened its consular office in Wales & opened one in Manchester. E-W cooperation diversifying & strengthening between Irl & GB & hopefully will reenergise Strand 3 British-Irish Council with NI reps too.

So different from joint guardianship of peace process & GFA where govts carved strategy together: U.K. official says govt in intensive talks with DUP & Irish gov involvement in restoring Exec would be ‘problematic’ for unionists.

Interesting by @AlexKane221b that Varadkar’s comment expecting UI (not aspiring to it as he said on Mon, but ‘expecting’ it) ‘spooks’ unionists, so CHH may have publicly criticized for fear DUP deal would stall. Whole thing implies, (like legacy) breakdown in intergovernmentalism

Hard-hitting words from ⁦⁦ @mickfealty : overview of Churches (all-Ireland) role. He notes they had been preparing for months to make it service of reconciliation, with discussions with all parties.Tenor of article is that Higgins made decision alone

As an asthma sufferer and as my husband had had cancer, I always noticed an arrogance among smokers about how it affected others. That definitely changed & quite quickly. Thank you @MichealMartinTD

The (I think) most interesting aspect of Ireland’s smoking ban was how it changed behaviour in private houses unaffected by the law. Immediately people at house parties started to go outside to smoke. Laws affect norms.
