George Gascón has failed us.
As a violent crimes prosecutor, I’ve put a cop killer, serial rapists and members of MS-13 behind bars. Now I’m running for L.A. District Attorney to turn the tide on violent crime.
About a month ago, these calls were uncovered. Last Wednesday,
@GeorgeGascon
told
@JamesQueallyLAT
that nothing substantive was going to change on juvi policy. On Thursday,
@BillFOXLA
let the DA know that he had the Tubbs calls. Friday, DA does a complete reversal.
Before
@GeorgeGascon
took office, Justin Flores’ best offer was 32 months in state prison. Under George Gascon, it was 10 days in county jail and probation…
The question is when did
@GeorgeGascon
’s executive team know about these call?.Every indication is that they knew about them early on, but only acted on them after
@BillFOXLA
sought comment last week. Only then did they reverse course.
The Kevin Honea case is yet another example: George Gascón continues to lose in court. It turns out having a D.A. who has never argued a case in court in his life was a bad idea.

The right to express one’s political opinions is the cornerstone of our liberal American democracy.
However, for the past few years,
@PplsCityCouncil
has used violence—not speech—to further their agenda. They have attacked police officers, vandalized public property, and
Three lies told by George Gascón before the Daily News editorial board:
Lie No. 1:
“In their work against me, the union had to raise their dues twice and now a third time — they spend it on the campaign against me, on recalls, on lawsuits."
Fact:
We raised dues to pay for
"The time to build a functional mental health system was two and half years ago. Instead of doing so,
@GeorgeGascon
offered Tweets, press conferences, and his thoughts and prayers. That is not enough. It is irresponsible. And it’s dangerous," said Eric Siddall
Today, the judiciary affirmed the rule of law. Gascón’s authority is not absolute. He must follow the rules. While we are heartened by the Court’s ruling, we continue to be disappointed that LA’s chief prosecutor forced us to take him to court to stop him from breaking the law.
Congratulations
@BillFOXLA
on winning an Emmy for your investigative work on
@GeorgeGascon
’s retaliatory actions against Richard Doyle.
Well deserved!
There are over 10,000 unfiled cases currently sitting in the DAs office.
The current DA won’t do anything about it.
Nor can he fill the ranks and create the infrastructure to keep LA safe.
The utter incompetence is staggering.

@nypost
Today, a jury in Los Angeles told George Gascón that he was wrong for retaliating against an employee who had the guts to tell him something he didn’t want to hear. What’s more, they did it after listening to Gascón directly.
@LADAOffice
@BillFOXLA
@JamesQueallyLAT
@elonmusk
A few more points on this lawsuit:
George Gascón punishes those who follow the law, not those who break it.
He punishes those who question the wisdom of his policies, not those who show blind allegiance.
He punishes those who act ethically.
People’s City Council has pretty thin skin after I called them out for terrorizing the home of the president of
@AIPAC
during Thanksgiving.
It’s time for George Gascón to denounce this hate fueled organization. At the very least, he needs to reject their endorsement.
Gascón’s retaliation against these two respected prosecutors is more proof that he lacks the competence to lead the largest local prosecutorial agency in the country. And the citizens of Los Angeles County are paying the price.
Today, I want to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you who supported our campaign. Although the results did not turn out as we hoped, our commitment to justice, public safety and sustainable reform remains unwavering.
This campaign was a journey that
Gascon refuses to prosecute gun & gang enhancements, he dismantled the hardcore gangs unit of veteran prosecutors who handle the most serious gang crimes, and he refuses to prosecute juvenile gang shooters as adults, even days from 18. Out by age 25 and DJJ being is phased out.
This ideology-driven incompetence doesn’t just cost taxpayers money - it also diverts valuable personnel away from taking on important cases to put violent criminals behind bars and keep our community safe - instead sending them on wild goose chases that can’t be won.
(3/4)
As your D.A., I’ll never put politics ahead of public safety. Sadly, this is just the latest in the near-daily reminders that voters must vote George Gascón out of office.
(4/4)
Not since the 1990s have we seen this level of bloodshed in a single day. We don’t have a DA willing to meet this challenge. He refuses to acknowledge that LA has a
#gun
and
#gang
problem.
For over decade, Los Angeles County has failed to create a safe and humane way to detain violent mentally ill people. This report shows the result of this lack of leadership.
EXCLUSIVE/THREAD: LAPD arrested a man for stabbing the neck of a construction worker, nearly killing him. Despite a prison recommendation from Probation Dept., LA DA
@GeorgeGascon
's admin agreed to give him diversion instead. He is now charged w/ murdering his neighbor last week.
We are still waiting for
@GeorgeGascon
’s response. One of the cornerstones of our democracy is that political leaders answer questions and explain their agenda.
No matter how many times this happens, Gascón continues making politically motivated prosecutions where he puts ideology ahead of evidence, and his personal preferences ahead of the law, leading to a staggering number of defeats in the courtroom.
(2/4)
So the next question is what caused this reversal: was it a desire to improve the policy or was it that
@GeorgeGascon
was exposed as being incompetent? Was it a true conversion or was it damage control? I think the timeline of events tells the real story.
“Today, the Court gave a civics lesson to George Gascón... So, while today represents a great day for the rule of law, it is a stain on Gascón’s legacy.”

Only a handful of lawyers want to work for the LA County DA’s office. Applications are at record lows and vacancies are at record highs. Today, the few who have applied for the open positions learned how little
@GeorgeGascon
cares about them.
We went from one of the safest American cities to this chaos. Progress is not possible when those responsible for ensuring the public’s safety refuse to do their job.

Fact:
The union negotiated directly with the County CEO office to get raises. Gascón had no input in the process.
Nor did he offer raises.
All of us welcome change… if it makes our office more efficient and effective. But
@GeorgeGascon

Gascon told
@alexcoheninla
@LAADDA
increased dues because we went broke in the last election. Wrong again George. Reality: Our members voted to dues because we needed to sue Gascon for his retaliatory and illegal policies, including violation of civil service rules.
Not sure I have ever seen a Los Angeles District Attorney blame
#victims
for causing crime. But that is exactly what
@GeorgeGascon
did when he put the blame on
@UnionPacific
for a surge of thefts.
Never did he acknowledge that his edicts had anything to do with it.

Lie 2:

Fact:
Never happened. The union never told members not to take the exam.
Last week, I called out George Gascón for making gross misrepresentations to the
@ladailynews
and other newspapers owned by the SCNG. Today, the
@LAADDA
filed unfair labor charges against Gascón for these false claims.
One thing is clear, we need to move in a new direction.
At his brief press event this week,
@GeorgeGascon
said he wasn't there to "explain" Flores’ time-served, probation sentence.
Don't the families of those murdered police officers deserve an explanation? Maybe it's because there is no good explanation…and he knows it.
This week,
@GeorgeGascon
said that the past was "water under the bridge." He suggested that he's ready to move on and lead the DA's office.
OK, George.
Here's the data:
@EricSiddall
isn't the only DA that
@GeorgeGascon
has blocked.
Can't lead when you're afraid to listen.
"Releasing people back onto the streets with no supervision is not the answer. LA County needs to build out a system that includes lockdown mental health facilities to treat those with serious mental health concerns."
So second degree murder is 15 years to life, not 25. Maybe it would be helpful to review a penal code.
It’s online so it’s not too difficult.

The ADDA’s injunction struck down Gascón’s illegal policies and forced him to follow the law. It is the only reason Ms. Avant’s killer is going to state prison for 193 years.

Thank you to
@VICE
for having and hosting a mature and nuanced discussion about the felony murder rule. As with so much else in law, examining an issue from both sides doesn’t make you weak… it makes you an adult.
Smash and Grabs continue. These crimes are not victimless. From workers, shoppers, and store owners, they impact the livelihood of so many of my fellow Angelenos.

County need a reliable partner in the District Attorney’s office. That’s why I’m running.
Together, I know we can finally move LA into a new direction with safer neighborhoods and healthier communities — because the people of LA deserve nothing less.
There is no real plan by the LA DA’s office to deal with the surge of criminals in possession of firearms… Besides thoughts and prayers, Gascón thinks credit card companies should take a more active role.
How about holding criminals accountable?
When you rewrite the definition of recidivism to narrow its scope, and then claim you lowered recidivism, that doesn’t mean you lowered it. It means you cooked the books.
DA Gascón has engaged in anti-labor activity and refuses to bargain. Union busting, retaliation, and costing the taxpayer millions is the hallmark of Mr. Gascón’s administration.

Beautiful day in Watts honoring murdered victims.
A fitting end to National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
Special thanks to LaWanda Hawkins, John Coughlin, the Moms, Justice for Murdered Children, LAPD, and LASD.
Last month, Gascón replaced the career civil servants who normally screen new applicants with his usual cast of political loyalists. Some of those cronies weren’t around for today’s scheduled interviews.

The problem with prosecutors like
@GeorgeGascon
is that they are so focused on releasing people from custody that they don’t think twice about what happens to those people when they get out.
I’m running for district attorney to put an end to these increasingly extreme, partisan swings of the criminal justice policy pendulum. Our future doesn’t have to look like our past. There is a better way forward.
@GeorgeGascon
has had two and a half years to find a workable solution to this mess… one that complies with the law while protecting public safety.
He hasn’t. In fact, he didn’t even weigh in on this issue.
In court,
@GeorgeGascon
refuses to hold criminals accountable for having or using a gun.
In a campaign letter, he will tell you the opposite.
Reality versus politics.
@GeorgeGascon
never engaged in an individual case analysis in this case. If he had, he would have realized that Cachu’s criminal history, including committing a murder, and limited prospects for rehabilitation, meant he should have been in adult court.
Tonight I'll be joining my fellow candidates for LA County District Attorney in a forum hosted by multiple law enforcement labor partners. Notably absent from the list is George Gascón who can’t be bothered to show up to speak to law enforcement about the issues that matter most
“The district attorney overstates his authority. He is an elected official who must comply with the law, not a sovereign with absolute, unreviewable discretion.” This point should be obvious, but our fantastic legal team made this happen.
Law enforcement agencies and prosecutors across the state were given millions to combat organized retail theft.

@JoeBuscaino
is 100 percent right. We have lost all common sense on how to deal with gun and gang violence in Los Angeles.
Thoughts and prayers are not enough.
Phony political pandering from the guy who refuses to enforce California’s gun laws.
Now he wants to use the tragedy of the

Try doing your job.
This is a horrible loss for Los Angeles. Hitting the newsroom as hard as the management did only further damages our democracy and erodes accountability.
A terrible day for our community.
@Elex_Michaelson
glad to see you can see the bigger picture.
This is terrible for Los Angeles...and our democracy itself.
A strong, vibrant local newspaper is essential to holding local officials accountable & connecting a community.
Local government can't function properly without educated voters.
Support local reporting!
California has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation, but those laws don’t matter if people like
@GeorgeGascon
and Pamela Price
@AlamedaCountyDA
don’t care enough to use them.
And, as this story makes clear, he still believes he is above the law and beyond question.
That may be how you do things when you’ve afraid of political backlash. It may be how George likes it. But it’s not how we do it under our system of justice.
Every defendant, every victim, and every fact pattern is unique. Our approach to each case should reflect those variations. That’s why I’m committed to violence reduction, reserving the harshest punishments for the most violent criminals.
“The office is in crisis,” said Siddall, who presented himself as part of “a new generation of prosecutors” who neither embraces Gascón’s more liberal policies nor wants to “to turn back the clock” to policies that fuel mass incarceration.

Find your polling location:
Gascón has made clear that lessening any punishment defendants face, and reversing punishment for already in state prison, are his priorities. Abandonment of victims targeted for their membership in a racial minority is a result of these policies.
"Recent polling data indicates that Siddall’s candidacy presents a substantial challenge to Gascón’s incumbency, with Siddall emerging as a strong contender in a potential head-to-head matchup."
Los Angeles needs a DA with both prosecution and leadership experience who can be a reliable partner to everyone in the justice system - not just those who commit violent crimes.
