When I wrote My Favorite Thing Is Monsters I kept thinking about a kid in a community that was violently unsupportive of their identity as a gay, lesbian, trans person. I kept imagining them secretly reading Karen's journal and not feeling alone anymore. This breaks my heart.

I know that it's hard to be ANYONE in this world (and for many almost impossible). I'm lucky to have been published/ given a voice, but I wish it could be easier to be who I am and ask for what I need to remain a creator. If the difficulty is because of my gender, I don't know.

@jelani9 @samthielman This was touching. I spent a few weeks of my teens homeless and the library allowed me a safe place. I was deeply dismayed earlier in this administration when the defunding of libraries was broached. There is no hope for a democracy without them.
