I’m very proud and honoured today to have been appointed by HM The Queen as High Sheriff of Greater Manchester. 2020/21. Following in the wonderful Mark Adlestone’s
@HighSheriff_GM
footsteps from April 17th
So, after an on-air partnership of 32 yrs, Jimmy Wagg and I are finishing our Sunday morning programme on
@bbcradiomanc
. Final programme is 28 March. And we're having one last theatre show
@StockportPlaza1
on September 19th in aid of
@StAnnsHospice
Please join us
Thanks to everyone who has supported our Installation, shared the experience with us and sent us best wishes. We really appreciate all your thoughtful messages of encouragement. Best wishes The Sheriffna and High Sheriff
When you applaud our NHS heroes in half an hour, please also think of our amazing colleagues
@StAnnsHospice
who are looking after very vulnerable patients at this difficult time. All hospice workers are also heroes. Thanks
An informative royal visit from HRH PRincess Anne to
@Catch22
Manchester. It's an organisation working in partnership with
@gmpolice
to help victims and witnesses in Greater Manchester to cope and recover from the impact of crime
@GMLO_UK
It’s 30yrs since I played a tune with maestro Mike McGoldrick. Now, thanks to a clever app and Mike’s patience, I can virtually accompany him as we play an Irish tune called St Anne’s Reel- especially for the fab team at
@StAnnsHospice
Our special year in office as High Sheriff and Sheriffina of GM comes to an end today. Best wishes to our next High Sheriff,
@DianeHawkinsDL
Many thanks for all your support, encouragement and engagement during the year. 'Before and after photos, ' April 2020 - April 2021
Two weeks today I will be installed as High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, following Mark the current wonderful HS,
@HighSheriff_GM
. Installations are often grand affairs but this one is now going to be done 'virtually' from home.(I'm still getting dressed up though)
What a week for
@StAnnsHospice
. Just before our 50th anniversary, we have been given permission to build a brand new hospice, securing our future. Now we just need to raise £10million! If you know of any philanthropists, please point them our way!
Remembering The legend- Tony Wilson on his birthday. Tony on the north/south divide: "We gave you The Industrial Revolution, the trades union movement, the Communist Manifesto, the first computer and the best music. Down South you came up with Chas and Dave"
Happy anniversary to my beautiful and very modest wife, Sheila. Today we celebrate 31 years of marriage. How and when we first met is a matter of fact. However, whether we were ever actually 'childhood sweethearts' is still a matter of huge debate!
This week should have seen the official Hanging of the Sheriff (a photo portrait) in the Crown Court. Obviously it’s postponed but to make up for it, this surprise painting arrived today. Present from
@Laura_ONeal
and painted by Anna
Delighted to have been invited to contribute to a documentary for
@mcrhistfest
marking 50 years since the world-changing disabled people bill introduced by Alf Morris. Absolutely right to do this in Wythenshawe
Such sad news. He was a private man and in the sometimes self-congratulatory world of media, his authenticity and humility shone through. He was very proud of his girls and they'll be comforted to know how much their dad was admired, appreciated and loved by all of us.
I know I've said this before but please, at 8pm, when you'e applauding, remember those key workers who look after patients in our hospices. Hospices are independent charities and make a huge difference to our communities, especially at this time. Thanks a million
After Jimmy Wagg and I said goodbye to Sundays 12 months ago, I’m back on the Sunday morning slot
@BBCRadioManc
(10am-2pm) -temporarily- during April and May. Hope you can join me. Let’s have a giggle
This is for the 3.8 million lives that were ignored.
The freelancers and the self employed.
The Conference are trying every trick to have this taken down…so I’ve just deployed large digital vans as well, to keep circling the area.
My grandson,Harry, asked which app I used to teach maths when I was a teacher. I told him calculators had only just been invented. This was my ‘interactive’ board. (It moved up and down, and everything. He thinks I’m very old
If you’re coming to support the London Marathon, please look out for me and give me a wave of encouragement. It’s my very first time. I’ll be standing next to the beer and burger vans near Vauxhall Bridge.
A huge day for
@StAnnsHospice
Our 50th anniversary today. Half a century of looking after the people of Gr. Manchester. One of the UK’s oldest and largest hospices. Congratulations to all colleagues and volunteers
Our final official event as High Sheriff and Sheriffina: we were grateful to be invited to share in Manchester Cathedral's Evensong service during which we remembered HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
@ManCathedral
@LordMayorOfMcr
A great pleasure to present the MBE to Dr Heather Williams,
@alrightPET
a senior medical physicist
@TheChristie
specialising in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Also a huge advocate for women and girls in science. A well-deserved honour
@GMLO_UK
A thoughtful and classy gift (& one each) from my sister
@BernieONeal
as Jimmy Wagg and I prepare for our final Sunday morning programme together this weekend on
@BBCRadioManc
This week's Majorca holiday cancelled, obviously. Oh for the days you could pile all the family and luggage into (and on top of) an old Ford Anglia and leave Wythenshawe for a week in Ireland. It was just a quick three hours to Holyhead, through all the clogged up N Wales towns.
The GM High Sheriff Young Citizen of the Year for Trafford is Freya Gavin. She's faced huge challenges and lost her sight in 2019. She's heading to elite athlete level and volunteers with Challenge 4 Change, demonstrating her leadership skills. Inspirational Freya (and Lennon!)
It was a privilege to know Caroline and to work with her closely in the early days of her amazing career. I was also honoured to be invited to her funeral. A generous, kind, authentic woman. If you missed the programme, please watch on catch up.
The opening of the DIanne Oxberry Rose Garden at Media City. A beautiful memorial that also serves the purpose of spreading the word about ovarian cancer symptoms

office for a superb collaboration -a new rooftop park and snazzy ‘Metrolink-ready’ interchange heard the story on
@BBCRadioManc
and came to see for myself
History has been made. A serving High Sheriff presents a radio programme
@bbcradiomanc
to mark the death of a senior Royal Family member. Guests include Lord-Lieutenant, Sir Warren Smith: former HS
@PaulGriffithsDL
and Karan Lee DL. The GM Lieutenancy well represented.
@GMLO_UK
The GM High Sheriff Young Citizen Of The Year for Manchester is Kea Bell. She is an outstanding community volunteer with the Caribbean & African Health Network: Life & Friendship Group Burnage and much more. Congratulations Kea
Delighted to be sitting in Studio 23 for my former TV partner,
@BeckyWant
on
@BBCRadioManc
this afternoon from 2pm. Hope you can listen in at some point.
There were many social distanced parties yesterday. At ours, the High Sheriff and Sheriffina of Greater Manchester made a short speech to the neighbours and proposed a Toast to our WW2 heroes, using a loudhailer, obviously. (Then the uniform was swapped for T-Shirt and shorts).
@BishManchester
@BBCr4today
Bishop David, you were, as always, excellent in Radio 4 this morning. Perfectly measured - it with an appropriate, supportive ‘edge’. Thanks for representing us
@BishManchester
As I have just over two weeks left as High Sheriff before I hand over to
@DianeHawkinsDL
, I have written my final HS column in the Manchester Weekly News. Thanks to the paper for helping me to publicise all the great work our communities have been doing.
Following the announcement of the 'road map' I've started looking at flights online. Sheila's very excited, which is surprising as she doesn't play darts.
Thanks very much to
@AndyBurnhamGM
for visiting the Dianne Oxberry Garden at Media City UK.
@TrustDianne
really appreciates the Mayor’s interest in our charity’s aim to raise awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer.
Really looking forward to sitting behind the mic tomorrow morning (Sunday) 6-10am
@BBCRadioManc
Hope you can join me and producer
@BekkyKelly
. We’ll be talking about Ukraine,
@Francishouse
and
@caritassalford
among many other things.
I'm am so thrilled that
@MENnewsdesk
has today kindly published the story about the wonderful achievements of our Young Citizens. It shows the MEN's commitment to celebrating social action. Congratulations to all our Young Citizen of the Year winners, and those Highly Commended.
I want to pay a huge, heartfelt tribute to my wonderful colleagues
@StAnnsHospice
Thank you so much for stepping up, supporting each other and doing it all with goood grace. All for the good of our our patients. Thank you very much. I’m very proud of you. E
Backstage at the Plaza with co-presenter Jommy Wagg and in between us the amazingly talents Buzz Hawkins.... the man behind The Bradshaws. All in memory of Dianne Oxberry. So many loyal listeners and fab acts making it a great night
