Jose Ramirez's day:
-Demanding handshakes from anyone standing in clubhouse
-Throwing small ice cubes at pitchers, then hiding out of view when they turned around
-Yanking on Erik Gonzalez's leg and spinning him around in his chair while he was on the phone
-3 hits, 23rd HR, SB
Opposing front office: We’d like to have Bauer
Indians: OK
FO: But that incident today was kinda ugly
Indians: ya not ideal
FO: so we probably wouldn’t give you as much for him
Indians: well we’re happy to keep a really good pitcher
FO: but he threw the ball
Indians: OK?
It felt hard to believe when Tito picked Cleveland. That press conference felt like an organizational rebirth. The energy had changed.
For Francona era to last 11 years also feels hard to believe. Truly privileged to see part of it up close. Incredible chapter for the franchise
I can't believe it. This doesn't even feel real. I don't even know what to say. I never even would have guessed it.
Mike Clevinger passed Corey Kluber in fWAR today.
Crazy ... Oh, what are you guys talking about?
Carrasco: "I just want to finish my career with (the Indians). I’m thankful for that and really happy. At the same time, my family’s happy, too. That’s all that matters."
Trevor Bauer throwing to hitters today (Haase, Rosales, Barnes). Bauer was joking with Jose Ramirez during simulated innings.
“You tell me what you want to hit and I’ll throw it.”
Jose pointed out to outfield and said “home run pitch.”
I think two things can be true: First, the Ramirez extension still doesn’t excuse the lack of activity this offseason or the payroll staying where it’s resided. Second, this is an incredibly great thing and a needed change of operation worthy of celebrating.
Baseball can’t connect with a younger audience?
Earlier today, TV turned on and football was on. 2-year-old screamed “Noo!” and demanded baseball. Now, he’s running around the living room in circles with a bat yelling “home run!”
So, so proud.
Always appreciate small details in a walk-off. While Francisco Lindor's teammates were preparing to greet him at home for a celebration, Trevor Bauer grabbed a single cup of Gatorade, carefully ran toward the group -- he didn't want to spill it -- and dumped it on Lindor's head.
The Cavs are in such a fun point of their build up. It’s new enough where the regular season games are enjoyable. Feel meaningful. It’s not to a point where expectations make it tough to enjoy the little things along the journey.
"Throw strikes!" a fan yells from the upper deck after Bauer went to 1-1 against McCann. Bauer, having *never* considered that option prior to receiving that advice, fires a pair of strikes to emerge from a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.
Before today's game, Francona said of Yandy Diaz: "He’s a guy that, at some point, is probably going to hit in the middle of our lineup."
So, maybe that should be, like, now.
Some personal news: I won't be on The Athletic's opening day roster of writers. I want to thank them for the opportunity and 2+ years of fun. Also, thanks to our loyal Indians subscribers for making it a blast. I'm not sure what the future holds, but eager to see what's next.
Un-freaking-real. About an inning ago, they showed Ramirez and Rosario on the bench. Quiet. Observing. Both anything but quiet in the 9th, they keep it going, and Cleveland’s rookies do the rest.
Anything can happen in the postseason. We’ve seen it. But my biggest takeaway may remain that Cleveland entered this stretch full of youth and just demolished everyone in one of the biggest flexes we’ve seen in a while.
Chants of “Let’s Go Bieber” fill Progressive Field just before Shane Bieber strikes out the side. He gets a big hug from Francisco Lindor as he returns to the dugout. Not a bad All-Star debut.
“I’m *sure* they’ll get it right next year...”
- me, talking about the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts and the Browns’ annual coach search
Corey Kluber goes the distance, a complete game shutout on 98 pitches. That my friends is a

. Kluber has allowed just one run over his past two starts (16 1/3 innings vs. Tigers and Angels).
I’m always a little surprised to see Gonzalez take some wild cuts earlier in a game or at-bat but then manage to focus on contact later in a sequence. Part of what makes him a fascinating hitter. So hard to predict sometimes.
There is no bigger blessing than having a
@MattLoede
in your life. How much he loved and cared for others was seemingly endless and inspirational. He never stopped fighting. For friends. For family. For life. If you needed ANYTHING, he was there. An incredible friend. A fighter.
Bauer said Jose Ramirez not participating in Derby was "just giving other people a chance to win it."
"I was making fun of him the other day. I was like, 'You only hit a homer after Lindor hits a homer.' And then he went out and hit two homers and looked at me [and shrugged]."
So much gets lost in his recent playoff starts, but if you get a chance (and you can stomach it), go back and watch some of Kluber's 2016 playoff starts before Game 7. Forgot just how dazzling he was in Game 1 of the WS.
Baseball is weird/awesome and you should just expect anything and everything. But regardless of what happens the rest of the way, I’d be lying if I said I expected this Indians team to go all Thanos and snap away an 11.5 game lead.
This was true after 3-way deal, but more true after dealing Alonso: Now less pressure for Indians to move 1 of their starters due to financial needs. If they still wish to move one, deals can be motivated by return, as they should be. Or, should they choose, they could keep them.
Typical kids would give play-by-play of themselves as they imagined delivering in a big moment in their backyard.
Cleveland kids would imitate the beats of John’s drum as they prepared to bring that runner in from second base.
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of John Adams.
John has been with us since our time at Cleveland Municipal, banging his drum for nearly 50 years, bringing joy to fans and players alike.
John, you will be missed but your legacy will live on forever.
Did you know: Kipnis, over his career, has struck out 17.1% of the time with RISP -- below the league average from 2011-2019 with RISP -- and posted a .794 OPS (above average during that time frame) and 110 wRC+ in those situations in his career?
There are typically few ways for a contending team to massively upgrade multiple spots. It’s usually a small upgrade or depth here and there. Cleveland got so little from DH and C. You add solid players there, that’s a massive, MASSIVE difference, even if they aren’t superstars.
If sports has taught me anything, it’s that T-shirts don’t win games. A couple bangs on a trash can, an ability to whistle and a good home video feed does.
After Bieber collected his first big league hit -- a double! -- the Cardinals tossed the ball into the Tribe dugout. Bauer grabbed it and briefly pretended to throw it into the crowd.
If there was thing Terry Francona felt confident about, it was Trevor Bauer keeping his arm strength up through injury. Bauer is currently wearing a walking boot, kneeling on the outfield grass with a bag of baseballs to his right and firing ball after ball to an athletic trainer
It’s not just the one start by McKenzie. It never is for anyone. It’s actual growth and development you can see - both mental and physical from the start of the year.
6 years ago, Jason Giambi played the role of hero one more time, blasting a walkoff homer to keep the Indians in the Wild Card race. One of my favorite pieces last year was reliving that moment through the eyes of the players, coaches and front office
Never forget that as the chaos of the Ramirez-Anderson fight was being unpacked, what did you hear over the ballpark speakers: “OOOOOOOOHHH WHO LIVES IN A PINEAPPLE…”
Yeah, I know, using a player's current pace to project their year-end numbers is silly. But why be so damn serious all the time? ... At their current rate:
- Lindor: 53 doubles, 45 homers
- Ramirez: 47 doubles, 47 homers
@SherwinWilliams
u up?
Since Terry Francona has been in Cleveland, he’s frequently said how much he enjoys watching his teams rise to meet a challenge. Asked him about that theme going into Game 3.

So, they let Urshela go and kept Gonzalez. They traded Gonzalez for Luplow. If they kept Gio, they don’t have their *best* hitter. Galaxy brain. Flawless logic. Don’t @ me.
