The Daily Show is running a full page Oscar-style “For Your Consideration” ad in the New York Times today, aimed at winning President Trump’s upcoming dishonest media awards...
The president’s legal team put out an initial statement that said: “the President did nothing wrong and Paul Manafort will tell the truth.” Minutes later, they put out a new statement that said simply: “the President did nothing wrong.”
I was just standing in an office in the WH press office when Kellyanne Conway came in. I asked for her reaction to this. She pointed to the door and said “can you leave, please?” Later, I asked her again, and she said: “I have no reaction. Why would I give you a reaction?“
The U.S. Office of Special Counsel today sent a report to Trump finding that Kellyanne Conway violated the Hatch Act on numerous occasions.
OSC recommends that she be removed from federal service.
BREAKING: DOJ says Ilya Lichtenstein, 34, and his wife, Heather Morgan, 31, both of New York, were arrested today and charged with money laundering cryptocurrency stolen from Bitfinex in 2016. DOJ says it has recovered a whopping $3.6 billion worth of crypto.
This is great: at the Russian Embassy in DC, people projected the Ukrainian flag onto the embassy building. The Russians tried to obscure it with a spotlight. Hilarity ensued.
There were several tactical and presentation decisions that made last night’s Jan. 6th Committee hearings so effective:
1. They dispensed with the dumb “every member gets 5 minutes” rule. Congressional committees cling to the format, and it makes many hearings incoherent.
President Biden promised a US response to DarkSide yesterday and right now something very bad appears to be happening to DarkSide, which hacked the Colonial Pipeline.
President Trump praises his own scientific skills: "All these doctors say, 'how do you know so much about this?' Maybe I have a natural ability, maybe I should have done this instead of running for president." Trump says his uncle went to MIT and was a super genius.
More bad news for President Trump on our new CNBC/Change Research battleground States of Play poll our this morning: Joe Biden leads by 6 points in the 6 battleground states (50 to 44), up 3 points over the past two weeks. Biden has a lead in all six battleground states now.
CIA Director Burns says China’s President Xi and Chinese leadership are “unsettled” by blowback from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Says China did not anticipate Russian difficulties, reputations damages to China and economic consequences of the invasion.
A former sr administration official tells me President Trump has slew of pardons ready to go, as well as executive orders, plans to declassify Ukraine info and appoint special counsels on Hunter Biden and possibly Dominion voting machines as well. Unclear which he will do.
I asked President Trump if he had ever asked any foreign leaders for corruption investigations of anyone who was NOT a political opponent of his. He said we’ll have to check that.
President Trump is now being rebuked by “Sully” Sullenberger and The Rock in the same week. My guess is these independent cultural figures coming off the sidelines carries more weight than anything a politician can say. Who will the Trump campaign turn to to motivate their side?
11 years ago, Sully was called for his moment. Now, we are all called to this moment.
Join Sully in regaining control of this nation's destiny by voting Donald Trump out.

Just as Sen. Romney finished speaking, the White House announced that reporters will now no longer be invited to the Oval Office for the pool spray that was scheduled at 2:15 pm. Reporters were already on the South Lawn and ready to go in when the WH cancelled it.
There’s an absolutely bonkers flame war going on in the dark web right now. It’s nuts, but American companies and government agencies might want to pay attention. Because (likely) Russian hackers are venting rage against the US and vowing revenge.
Say hello to Norah Javers, born this morning at 6:16 am. She joins big brothers Declan and Hugh and big sister Evelyn in our Javers family. My wife Maureen is doing well, although maybe just a little tired. Happy New Year!
@Acosta
to President Trump, after Trump criticizes CNN: "I think our record on delivering the truth is a lot better than yours sometimes, if you don’t mind me saying."
DOJ says in late December alleged Oath Keeper member Kelly Meggs wrote in a Facebook message, “Trump said It’s gonna be wild!!!!!!! It’s gonna be wild!!!!!!! He wants us to make it WILD that’s what he’s saying. He called us all to the Capitol."
In a new book, Michael Cohen writes of President Trump “I know where the skeletons are buried because I was the one who buried them.” And he alleges “When Trump wanted to reach Russian President Vladimir Putin, via a secret back channel, I was tasked with making the connection.”
2. It was bipartisan. Yes, Rep. Liz Cheney is on the outs with her fellow Republicans for her role here. But she is a leader and from one of the most prominent Republican families. The hearing showed Democrats and Republicans working together for a common cause.
7. Introduction of new characters in a known story. Officer Caroline Edwards’ testimony was riveting. She got knocked down, knocked out, got up and back in the fight only to be pepper sprayed and gassed again. Committee showed who was fighting to save democracy that day.
I’m told the president’s anger about the CDC briefing yesterday is focused on Dr. Nancy Messonnier, who said it’s not whether, it’s when the virus will hit the US. “She never should have said that,” a senior administration official told me. “it’s bad.”
5. They broke news. We heard, for the first time, eyewitness accounts of what Trump was doing and saying during the insurrection and saw raw, searing, previously unreleased video of the attack.
6. They teased ahead to more news. The committee said members of Congress sought legal pardons from President Trump for their roles in the insurrection. Who were they? Committee indicated we will learn their names in hearings to come.
3. They let the staff take a lead in questioning. You even got to see the staff engage witnesses. Most committee members want to hog the spotlight for themselves, ignoring the fact that not all congresspersons are actually good at this. And some are really bad at it.
White House aides right now offering no explanation for why President Trump believes he can “hereby order” American companies to do anything. Also, officials have no information about what the president may or may not be announcing this afternoon, per his Tweet.
I spotted Peter Navarro and Robert Lighthizer just outside the Oval Office moments before the president tweeted this. It’s entirely possible he’s tweeting now with their input as he goes along.
Lost in the chaos yesterday was the fact that Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff Marc Short was barred from the White House grounds in apparent punishment for advising Pence to follow the Constitution. Indicates the level of paranoia and mistrust inside the White House.
Dr. Fauci commits on
@thenewsoncnbc
to staying on next year under either Trump or Biden: “I’m not going to walk away from this outbreak no matter who’s the president.”
A sr. adm official tells me there was a tense moment between Nancy Pelosi and Kellyanne Conway after POTUS walked out of the meeting today. “Kellyanne asked Pelosi a question,” the official said. “Nancy’s response was ‘I don’t talk to staff. I talk directly to the president.’”
The lighting and camera angles were warmer and closer than typical hearings. It gave the whole thing a welcoming and intimate vibe, which is the opposite of the star-chamber effect hearings can have.
Cybersecurity firm Mandiant says it sees dark web posts claiming DarkSide lost access to its infrastructure, including blog, payment, and servers and will be closing its criminal service service.
Some politicians don't realize that by treating reporters this way, they're just giving them more material. And it will often make them look worse than whatever it was they were upset about in the first place. This paints a picture of an enormously stressed out Mike Pompeo:
White House Counsel Don McGahn will be leaving his position in the fall, shortly after the confirmation (hopefully) of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court. I have worked with Don for a long time and truly appreciate his service!
A White House official tells me this morning’s Fed meeting took place in the White House residence - the president’s personal quarters- not in the West Wing, where the Oval Office is. I am told the president has not yet been in the West Wing today.
Statement from
@PressSec
: “the President has authorized economic sanctions against International Criminal Court officials directly engaged with any effort to investigate or prosecute United States personnel without the consent of the United States.”
Burns says the Chinese are “unsettled” by the impact of Russia’s invasion on the global economy at a time when China needs exonomic growth. Also unsettled by Putin driving EU and US closer together at a time when China felt it was better able to drive a wedge there.
I’m told the White House coronavirus Task Force has two estimates being used now:
Optimistic scenario: Peak virus will come 1 month from Saturday March 14. Pessimistic scenario: peak virus 3 months from March 14.
I asked a Trump Administration official what to make of the dramatic moves at the Pentagon. He said: “It’s just Trump guys getting revenge on people they don’t like and padding their resumes. It doesn’t mean anything on policy front.”
I asked a White House spokesman why it was proper for the president to say China should investigate Joe Biden at a time he's negotiating an enormous trade deal with the Chinese. The spokesman said: "No comment."
Joe Biden: “What we know about this president is if he’s given four more years he’ll be what he’s been for the last four years... he’ll wake up every day believing the job is about him, not about you.”
Mandiant says the Posts claim decrypters will be provided for companies who have not paid- that is, DarkSide is allegedly telling its affiliates to let its victims off the hook.
It couldn’t be hotter or muggier at the White House today, so spare a thought for the impressive Marines guarding the West Wing in their dress uniforms - they don’t even seem to break a sweat!
Trump attorney van der Veen makes it clear that Democrats got nothing whatsoever in their stipulation deal - he says the Trump team does not agree that anything in the article is true, just that the article exists.
Also - bear in mind that DarkSide may very well want the world to *think* they have gone away, even as they scramble to reconstitute in another format.
I am told to expect a number of federal criminal charges to be filed today against people involved in yesterday’s lawlessness in Washington. Details to come.
No deal text yet, but Sen. Schumer says there’s a provision that could have a huge impact on the Trump Org: “Prohibit businesses controlled by the President, Vice President, Members of Congress, + heads of Executive Departments from receiving loans or investments from Treasury”
A former Sr. Administration Official tells me sentiment is shifting in the GOP Senate:”In talking with Members of the House and Senate, I get the very real impression that impeachment would succeed right now. Everyone is just tired of Trump, and afraid of what he might do next.”
A senior administration official just gave me this reaction to this tweet from Nikki Haley:
“The only person person talking about Nikki Haley as Vice President is Nikki Haley.”
Enough of the false rumors. Vice President Pence has been a dear friend of mine for years. He has been a loyal and trustworthy VP to the President. He has my complete support. ❤️🇺🇸
And Intel 471 also reports the Cryptocurrency mixing service BitMix is reportedly inaccessible this week- that’s important because it’s one way hackers allegedly launder the proceeds of their criminal activity.
Couple notes of caution - this could be the result of government action, private sector Cybersecurity action or rival gangs sensing weakness and piling on.
DOJ says “a Russian national with extensive ties to the office of the president of the Russian federation” has been arrested and charged in hacking and insider trading scheme. Vladislav Klyushin, 41, was arrested in Switzerland in March 21 and extradited to the US on Dec. 18.
Spotted: A group of senior administration officials walking briskly on the colonnade heading toward White House residence; including Treas Sec Steven Mnuchin, Sec of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley.
Asked if the US government is responsible for this apparent DarkSide takedown, a National Security Council spokesperson tells me now: "unfortunately don’t have anything for you here."
I just asked Sarah Sanders if it was appropriate for President Trump to tweet about the jobs report before release this morning. She said it was, because “he didn’t put the numbers out.” She also confirmed that the President was briefed on the number last night.
Just got off the phone with a senior official at the Department of Justice who walked me through the changes coming tonight in the way prosecutors handle corporate criminal enforcement.
NEW: Rep. Gaetz has been informed that he came into contact with a CPAC attendee who tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus:
"Under doctor's usual precautionary recommendations, he'll remain self-quarantined until the 14-day period expires this week."
The CEO of Donald Trump’s new SPAC is a man named Patrick Orlando. According to his bio, he has recently “been serving as Chief Executive Officer of Yunhong International.”
That company is based in Wuhan, China:
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco will lay these out officially in a speech at 5:30 tonight. It's all about going after, and ultimately jailing, individual corporate executives at companies that commit fraud.
It all started earlier this week when the US government reportedly launched a coordinated attempt to bring down the servers of the ransomware group REvil.
I’m seeing a LOT of Trump critics on Twitter saying that these unexpected jobs numbers must have been “cooked” to help the president. Remember, candidate Trump made the same allegation against Obama in 2016. There was no evidence for it then and there’s no evidence for it now.
TFW the National Economic Council Director texts you a complaint, then texts that text to the President of the United States to show him that he texted, who then Tweets it out to 88 million people ... about a story you did not write.
Interesting that the Fed's statement is nearly word for word the same as the one released in February. Only difference seems to be that, today, they added the phrase "as required by law" to explain what the Fed's priorities are for monetary policy:
A former senior Trump administration official tells me he believes there are enough Republican votes in the Senate to convict and remove President Trump if they get articles of impeachment from the House.
A Swedish TV reporter who was at the White House event today took this video of someone kneeling during the national anthem at President Trump’s celebration of America event today.
Former Trump CoS Mick Mulvaney on
@CNBC
now, acknowledges he has not seen any evidence of voter fraud in this election. Says: “Sooner or later you do have to put up or shut up when it comes to the evidence.” He says allegations are not enough.
This will prompt curiousity: “Finally, Chair Powell said that he and his colleagues ... will set monetary policy, as required by law, to support maximum employment and stable prices and will make those decisions based solely on careful, objective and non-political analysis.
Kudlow on
@CNBC
now: “I think there will be a peaceful transfer of power.... This is the greatest country in the world and we abide by the rule of law as will the president.”
Wow, that look and the “cut it out” hand gesture from Speaker Pelosi instantly shut down a burst of applause from Democrats at the impeachment vote gavel. Controlling her caucus in real time.
Kellyanne Conway on her exchange with Speaker Pelosi yesterday, says Pelosi is rich and acts that way: “She treats me like she treats her maid or her pilots.”
President Trump going after the US chamber of Commerce now on
@CNBC
. Says he may resign his membership in the Chamber because the Chamber loves companies more that it loves the country.
I asked an administration official if he expects President Trump to issue pardons and fire officials such as Defense Secretary Esper, CIA Director Haspel and Dr. Fauci in a post election period. He replied, “Yes.”
The
@NSAGov
just responded to my request for comment on all this ... and referred me to the National Security Council, which has already declined to comment.
President Trump brings out Conan the Special Forces dog from the al Baghdadi raid. President Trump says Conan is trained to attack if you open your mouth - and warns the press to be careful.
Goldman Sachs on the virus: “We conclude that there is a significant risk of a second wave if policy or distancing behavior are eased prematurely and indiscriminately.”
It’s worth pausing for a moment to note that we have never in modern history seen a president so vehemently denounced by so many of his own former high level staffers. And in such stark terms.
DOJ says Lichtenstein and Morgan allegedly conspired to launder the proceeds of 119,754 bitcoin that were stolen from Bitfinex’s platform after a hacker breached Bitfinex’s systems and initiated more than 2,000 unauthorized transactions.
A former DOJ official tells me that to get a warrant to search a fmr POTUS, investigators would have to have “overwhelming evidence.”
“If you’re going to drop that type of paper you’d better be damn sure your Ts are crossed and your Is are dotted and it’s all double checked.”
The total value of Bitcoin stolen was $4.6 billion, DOJ says, and they have recovered $3.6 billion of it. BUT the DOJ is not accusing the married couple of the hack itself, leaving open the possibility that someone else was involved.
So cool. They found the original US Army Juneteenth decree: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, ‘all slaves are free.’”
