I’ve been on an X-Men kick lately with two marathons. Been revisiting all the films (and some other Fox Marvel films) in prep for Deadpool & Wolverine. And I’ve been catching up on X-Men: The Animated Series because of all the amazing things I’ve been hearing about X-Men ‘97.

This out-of-context quote has caused a lot of discourse for a few days now, so I wanted to put my piece on a rising problem in the Animation Twitter sphere: making assumptions based on deleted/revised material, and focusing on what a film ISN’T instead of what it IS.

The animation community needs to accept that not everything is made for them, but that doesn’t make it bad. DreamWorks’ filmography is like a buffet. There are a lot of options for everyone and while not everything will be on your plate, that dish might appeal to somebody.

There needs to be a massive “tell all” book about this. The DCEU is a fascinating case study of how not to run a cinematic universe and filled with constant executive interference. WB really wanted their MCU, but rushed to play catch up and overcorrected too many times.

ANIMATION IS NOT A COMPETITION. A work of art like The Boy and the Heron deserves way better than to be loved just for beating Disney. It should be celebrated on its own merits as another work of art by one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. God, you guys are annoying.

Changes are a part of the creative process, not just in animation or filmmaking, it’s part of making art. Your initial idea won’t always stay as is in the final product. It’s going to evolve with time as things get added, changed, or removed entirely. It’s how all films are made.

The Wish discourse cycle: 1. Animation Twitter wants Disney to do a thing. 2. Disney does that thing. 3. Animation Twitter still complains that “it shouldn’t be like that” like there’s one way to do stylized animation or in this case, a villain song. 4. Rinse and repeat.

Going back to Shame, they got cut not because of cowering out from a mature story, but because it wasn’t fun. That’s something people on here are missing. At the end of the day, these are FAMILY films. If it’s not fun for anyone, whether for kids or adults, then it’s not working.

Mann remarks how there are good movies that you’d never watch again because of how heavy they are, and that wasn’t the movie he wanted to make. Films like Grave of the Fireflies, The Zone of Interest, The Last Duel and any war film are a couple examples that come to mind for me.

Moral of the story: You can learn a lot from the behind the scenes of a film. But don't dwell on what didn't make the final cut. It can be fun to think about the "what if?", but like the filmmakers, you got to keep moving forward.

There’s a lot of reasons why a scene, character, concept or story would be cut, and that’s part of the filmmaking process. It could be budgetary, pushback from the crew, execs, or test audiences, or simply that the story doesn’t work with that idea in it.

I know a lot of people, myself included, are fascinated by the idea of “what if?” Whether it’s a deleted scene, concept art, or an entire film that got scrapped, it’s fascinating to imagine what could’ve been had it been fully realized, but wasn’t meant to be.

But often, people forget that the filmmakers deleted these scenes/characters/ideas for a reason because they felt the story wasn’t working. There’s always bound to be material that’s on the cutting room floor, and sometimes it sucks when a great scene gets cut.

The song would’ve been in this deleted scene when Sabino sings it after Asha recovers his wish. This is a heartfelt scene with a beautiful song to go with it. It would’ve helped the pacing between Asha recovering his wish and Magnifico storming their house not feel so rushed.

During Wish’s development, they developed the idea of making Star a magical human and potential love interest for Asha, or that the Queen was going to be a villain alongside King Magnifico. These could’ve been neat ideas, but it’s not our choice because we’re not the filmmakers.

@NeilNevins I guess to some parents, anything that’s not R is “family friendly”. The whole purpose of PG-13 was a middle ground for films with material not hard enough for an R, but stronger than a PG and is recommended more for older kids. James Gunn really made the most of that PG-13 in 3.

Talking about Wish makes me tired. Dislike it if you want, but a lot of the hate is so obsessive, vitriolic and insulting to the crew. I don’t have the energy anymore to deal with having a million swords pointed at me for saying “it’s fine” or “I liked it”.

I think enough time has passed to say that Wish is one of those films that has a justifiable reason to be overhated.

#Argylle is a silly fun guilty pleasure. Has the ridiculous action you’d expect from Matthew Vaughn (that skating scene is gold) even in a PG-13. A fun ensemble, especially Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell are a great pair. And thankfully, Sam does dance in this.

Got to check something off my bucket list to see The Room in a theater. That was one of the greatest experiences of my life! Here’s some highlights from some of the best scenes. 10/10, would do again any time it plays to throw some spoons. Happy 20th anniversary!

But at the end of the day, I think DC’s future is brighter and more hopeful than ever in the hands of James Gunn & Peter Safran. Gunn has made my favorite superhero movie trilogy and the best projects of the DCEU. He knows what makes a great story that connects with audiences.

#KungFuPanda4 is really fun! The action sequences are as awesome as ever, plenty of laugh out loud moments and some fun new characters. I can’t help but love Awkwafina in anything she’s in, so I already love Zhen. Good to have these films back and all I can say is SKABLAM!

There are parts of the DCEU I’m sad to see go like some of the cast, and others I’m glad to be free from like most of Snyder’s choices (and his delusional fanbase that’ll never move on) and not having to see Jared Leto or Ezra Miller in these movies ever again.

Both of these are beneficial, especially that second one. I hated that trend from the start. It’s CGI necromancy. Even ones done with the family’s consent like CG Harold Ramis in Ghostbusters: Afterlife are as uncomfortable as The Flash’s. It’s creepy, unnatural, absolutely evil.

#NoTimeToDie was incredible! A thrilling, action packed and satisfying conclusion to Daniel Craig’s legacy as 007. Cast is phenomenal with Craig, Malek, de Armas, Lynch, Wright and Waltz being standouts. It’s on par with Casino Royale and Skyfall and one of the best of the year.

Then again, there is a part of me that doesn’t want to get my hopes up since all of it could get canned if David Zaslav wants another tax write-off and makes sure no self-respecting filmmaker ever pitches their film to Warner Bros.

@Saberspark I’d say Pixar never really “fell off” and more people’s standards have changed. Other studios wished they had a legendary run like 2000s Pixar and that set everybody with a stupidly high standard that anything less than perfect is bad. At least there’s been more originals lately.

#Maestro made me ask “is there anything Bradley Cooper can’t do?” An engrossing and beautifully shot portrait of Leonard Bernstein with Cooper and Carey Mulligan giving powerhouse performances. A tremendous achievement for Cooper as an actor, and especially a director.

Every single piece of information about this film’s production is depressing and sours my feelings towards a film that I love. I’m going to piss off a lot of people for saying that I don’t want this to win all the Best Animated Feature awards because of all of this.

Better question, do you actually care about a film you like winning? You seem to care way more about Disney losing. Not beating those grifter allegations.

Damn, this stings. Carl Weathers was always great to see on screen. Many remember him best in Rocky, Predator, Happy Gilmore, and The Mandalorian, but I’ll always remember him as Combat Carl in the Toy Story Halloween special Toy Story of Terror, and he made a cameo in 4.

Good. If this isn’t finally the big boot to the ass to get Zaslav out, then I don’t know what is. After what happened with Batgirl, Scoob Holiday Haunt, and Coyote vs. Acme, I’d never want to make a film with Warner Bros. knowing that all my work could become a tax write-off.

We’ve been having this discussion since 2011. 12 years of this now. It’s just gone from “too many sequels” to “their films aren’t catering to MY tastes” and making it a box office = quality narrative, and too many misconceptions to name.

What's funny about all these discussions of "Pixar is losing their touch" is that we literally had this same discussion back in the 2010s. Of course, everyone forgot about that because they're only panicking from what they see on the surface.

All she said was that the animated film scared her as a child and describing what their take of the remake is. I’m 100% sure they never cared about Snow White for a moment in their lives until the chance to harass a young actress of color came up.

Because the trailer of a certain lion prequel came out, I need to make something clear: You guys need to learn to move on. Don’t let a movie you know you’re going to hate eat away at you. It’s not healthy. It’s just a movie.

“Their films are cheap” $70-90 million is still a lot of money to put into a movie. It’s not Disney/Pixar levels, but why is Illumination singled out when Sony and recently DreamWorks have their budgets in the same range? Mario was their first with a 9 digit budget at $100 mil.

This is a bit of a dumb thing to complain about, but can an editor at Skydance remove the “Celebrating 10 Years” from their logo already? They’ve been celebrating 10 years for 3 years, even though it was founded in 2006 and became a big name in 2010. Why have they not fixed this?

With all of the rampant review bombing recently towards Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ms. Marvel, and now Lightyear, it might be for the best to get rid of user reviews/audience scores all together. IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, get rid of it all. Except Letterboxd, that can stay.
