USS New Jersey is now high and dry (curator for scale), a small amount of water is being retained to facilitate the de-mudding and de-fishing of the drydock, but she's almost ready for work. (Photo courtesy of Ryan and

) Drydock tours are available!
The engineer in me is always fascinated by WW2 era force control computers (this one on HMS Belfast), so many different calculations being solved mostly by many gears and levers. 'Bolt on' expansions were somewhat more literal back then.
A reminder of just what lengths the RN went to in an effort to get the maximum flight deck length out of the interwar Ark Royal whilst keeping the hull down to a size that would fit in a lot of pre-existing drydocks.
How Wellington beat Napoleon at Waterloo!
What do you mean the British Army doesn't have a regiment of highly trained velociraptors? "Excuse me, mate, were you there?"

Today in YouTube comment:
"There were no colonies in the Spanish Empire, learn history."

I mean, I'm pretty sure.the population of Santa Cruz came from somewhere... 😀
A fallen hero was laid to rest today, this is Brin, he was a stray my father-in-law (Mrs Drach's family are South African and mostly still there) adopted a few years ago before he unfortunately passed away. Brin went to live with Mrs Drach's grandparents...
216 years since HMS Victory broke the line at Trafalgar and 100 years since she entered drydock, HMS Victory sails into battle again, aboard HMS Victory!
@NatMuseumRN
What is it with 'journalists' and a complete ignorance of anything naval showing through even more than usual?
We've had HMS Victory turned into the Flying Dutchman, the battleship Vanguard returned to us by ferrous necromancy and now guns that shoot out the back of the mount!
Going a little past 1950, but involves a pre-1950 ship. In my opinion the refit of HMS Victorious (left most here) was the beginning of the end for the RN's carrier fleet in the Cold War. It was so badly done and so expensive that the planned refits of much better ships were...
Whilst scanning photos today, Mrs. Drach found a picture of HMS Jupiter, and had also recently taken a photo of the sunset that looked a bit like Jupiter. Overlay one onto the other, and the result is actually quite pleasing. :)
Please keep your hands and arms inside the Battleship until she has come to a full and complete stop, which is now!
The Dragon is roosting!
@BattleshipNJ
When a ship moves at any substantial speed it generates a bow wave & with any wave peak comes a trough, then a peak etc.
Wavelength(Wv) = 0.557*v^2 (v is in knots)
If you know the length of the ship in a picture, then the square root of Wv/0.557 will give you the ships speed.
Wrapping up recording the last of the videos (for now!) of my 2022 USA Tour, realised that in the space of one year I managed to not only see my first ever battleship (USS Massachusetts), but also to 'collect' all four Iowa's.
Having just got back from seeing Godzilla -1, I'm amazed at the level of detail not just in the ship models but also in the choice of ships used in the movie (amongst other things, it's a really good movie). Carrying on the trend that movies that aren't actually trying to be...
In the next few hours, this will be full of water, and then shortly thereafter, once
@BattleshipNJ
is in place, they'll have to take all the water away again 😀
As you can tell from the layout of the blocks, we will be going in stern first.
When your orders to take the last outpost of an occupied European nation leave you calculating how to attack the primary fleet of the joint-largest navy on earth 6,000 miles away from the oil fields you actually want...
Hey
@TeamYouTube
your bots have just demonetised my latest video, and when I requested a manual review, this was 'reviewed' in the time it took me to reload the page and check on its status, clearly not an actual human! Please actually review this!
The early Torpedo Boats / Destroyers had an interesting variety of bow types, and with good reason! They were small enough that even the mildest sea could have some interesting effects.
Well, after being able to check on my laptop YT Studio, I've been able to determine the absolute farce that is
@TeamYouTube
's supposed review system has decided to accuse me of showing 'graphic violence or injury' in the Punic War video.
Anyone see any of that in the video???
Divers have confirmed all blocks are in their positions, we are now starting the main drain! (Previously the water was pumped out so the ship was a couple of feet above the blocks to make sure they still lined up)
Ever wanted to get a copy of a really good reference book, only to find it's out of print and costs a fortune? A small part of that frustration ends today, working with
@USNIBooks
I am happy to announced a reprint of 'Russian and Soviet Battleships' coming this autumn! (1/2)
Day 9(???) - After a fantastic afternoon aboard
@BattleshipNJ
and a long drove back to Dulles, it's time for one last American dinner before the flight home! So good to see so many of you, both new faces and those who've come to say hi before. Until next time!
Well, it's time to head back to the UK after 3 very full, very exciting and extremely enjoyable weeks in the USA. Met so many new people, made so many new friends. 😀 Will be back next year. Tour Mk2 naming suggestions can begin now!

So, after the Great White Fleet video, some people wanted to know what more modern USN ships would look like in that colour scheme. Courtesy of a subscriber, I give you the USS Iowa.
Wrapping up my first of three visits to the US this year, now heading back to the UK, once again met a bunch of great people, toured a bunch of awesome ships and concluded by being able to walk UNDER
@Battleship_TX
, plus the food was excellent as usual!
One way of working out where a ship's armour belt is, is simply to look for where the portholes aren't. Another way is to find a picture of the ship on launch-day as most ships had their belt fitted afterwards, and the resulting gaps are really obvious. 😀
Today at almost 16 weeks, Floppy has achieved a weight of 32lbs, which apparently makes him an alternate ammunition source for the heavy guns of HMS Victory 😀
Since it is the anniversary of the Battle of Jutland, I suppose I should put a link to my three-part series on the Battle, complete with all-star voice cast!
Very sad to hear Nathan Okun is no longer with us, he did a huge amount of work in making all sorts of naval information, but especially the fields of gunnery and armour, widely available to the public in an understandable format.
Can we all take a moment to celebrate the genius of French ship designers who, more than a century later, made me ponder for several minutes why they have decided to salvage three identical capsized hulls in exactly the same way... (Cerbere class)
It's always worth bearing in mind that you might have some idea what you want to do at sea, but the sea also has ideas about what it wants to do with you. :)
@GubbWerks
My mother has been in a wheelchair (paraplegic) for over 4 decades, I and my two brothers were all born whilst she has been wheelchair bound.
Y'know the one thing she would always include in stories about our family in the future? Her not being in a wheelchair...

@DockyardChatham
, can absolutely recommend a visit! Just completed the audio-visual Hearts of Oak tour, very well presented and accurate. The reward for finishing is this huge model of HMS Victory. :)
Day 12 - DATA DECLASSIFIED - Spent a wonderful day with Othais and the crew hunting wild sea mines amongst other things. We brought this one down successfully!
It may be about 80 years later and both my great-uncle and his aircraft are now gone, but thanks to
@CWHM
I was able to bring him and his old station back together again!
To help with a Drydock question coming up in a few weeks, I came up with this handy chart for working out which Standard-type battleship you're looking at.
Starting 10 days in the US with a visit to NASA Houston. Finally got in after having to queue twice as they don't tell you the queue to get in isn't the same as the ticket queue, even though the line passes the booth...
