I dedicated my best years to my current hospital, only to be abused beyond anything I could ever imagine. They have pushed me to the point where I now plan to take my own life. I am exhausted, I am done. This pattern of discrimination and abuse stops with me.

Neurosurgery registrars at my hospital (and likely other surgical registrars) have not been paid for the hours they have worked after midnight since February 2020. Physician trainees have not been paid their rostered weekend hours. Our hospital continues to ignore and silence us.

All of this. And to never have to have another meeting with hospital administrators to explain why neurosurgery registrars have the audacity to work after midnight on their on call shifts. Because “no other specialty seems to have this issue except you guys” #Neurosurgery

Junior doctors don’t need 1 day a year to wear coloured socks... They need; Humane work hours and humanly achievable workload. A supportive non-hostile work environment. Not to be in situations completely beyond their scope of practice. Be allowed to eat lunch.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out, I really appreciate it and feel overwhelmed by all the concern The hospital in question is *not* RCH or RMH- I’ve only ever experienced kindness there I am not angry, I just feel immense sadness and betrayal

THIS. 2020 was all about changing my goals. New goal: every training doctor is paid for the hours they have been asked to work by their hospital. Without guilt, without retribution, without question.

Could every consultant who interacts with this tweet and seems outraged please promise that on Monday you’ll ask your juniors how many hours of unpaid overtime they’ve done in the past fortnight? And do something with the answer.

This is exactly the problem- junior doctors are in a vulnerable position and the hospitals are aware of this. Many will never speak up for their rights out of fear of reprisal, out of fear of being “blacklisted” for future jobs. #timesup #metoo

@drpete00 @drruthmitchell @amavictoria I nearly got fired fighting about this, as a second year resident in 1997. So sorry it's still happening. At that time, some residents were being paid HALF what they should have been. Regularly rostered till 530 but working till 2200. Weekly compulsory unpaid Sat ward rounds.

@KArandjelovic @NasMAbdul It’s interesting that there is always someone in admin whose sole job is to chase up overpayment. But there never seems to be someone dedicated to the equally important issue of underpayment.

@NasMAbdul @KArandjelovic To my knowledge so far- everyone from accredited registrars to residents and interns. Our medical workforce has shifted the blame to the doctors- implying that if we were more vigilant with cross- checking our payslips this could have been avoided

I was once a very junior neurosurgery registrar - at trauma calls, the lead trauma surgeon would push a physical path through the sea of tall male surgical registrars, to escort me to the front to view the CT. “Get out of her way she needs to do her job, she is important too”

I looked 14 y.o at the time, and no one takes 14 y.o neurosurgery registrars seriously. This is how someone once advocated for me, and made sure I was never left to feel like an imposter. I remain forever grateful for this kindness #womeninsurgery

I was gushing about how amazing our paediatric anaesthetist (kind, helpful, competent, hardworking, loves neurosurgery) is to my boss- she then pulled out her phone to show me a video of him dancing in the anaesthetic bay on Christmas Eve to Mariah Carey. I was deceased.😍

Got carried out of the operating theatre barely conscious, severely dehydrated with a dangerously low BSL. I ended up with thrombophlebitis from the 14G cannula they stuck in me to give me IV dextrose. They had to get someone else in to close. Welcome to medicine my friends

The beginnings of our shrine to honour our Chief Health Officer in the neurosurgical office. Everyday the residents place a coffee in front of it and pray for a decline in community transmission, or a vaccine. A proof of concept study #insuttonwetrust #covid19 #stayhome

This does happen. I called in sick once with high fevers (pre Covid). Had to go find a GP for the required sick certificate because no one believed me. Never got any rest, got called back in for an urgent operation- I collapsed in a state of fevers and rigors whilst operating

@dr_ashwitt That was a truly heartless comment, made by someone who is defined by shift work and who is not exposed to the unique pressures and anxieties of doing remote on call. You should have said “oh, you knock off at 8am? I’m starting rounds at 7am after 96 hours’ on duty. MUST BE NICE”

@NasMAbdul I can’t agree more. Unaccredited registrars are in a uniquely vulnerable position. Silence, “going with the flow” and accepting poor treatment is rewarded with an invisible carrot- one day maybe getting into a training programme (no guarantees)

@RedWoodyRN @drroopearson @ElRees1 I too, would enjoy going into extraneous detail and justifications for what activities count as “wellness”: being paid on time and correctly; having a shower without the hospital calling; not having to do “work from home” hours on my days off that the hospital won’t pay for...

Please take the time to read this. This is not okay, this is a modern day horror story. One should not have to be married to a trauma surgeon in order to access basic medical care and acknowledgement of mechanism of injury

@DrMarcusMcMaho1 This is an all too common theme, and it saddens me that consultants are not immune to this treatment. Public hospitals have lost so many brilliant and talented doctors over time because they do not truly value their staff.
