Dec. 2, 1859: John Brown rode to the gallows on top of his own coffin. On his way to the stairs, he stopped to kiss a Black child who had been brought forward. He then slipped the hangman a note with his last words, "The sins of this land will not be purged away but with blood."
The West Virginia Building will be lit "Spring Valley blue" tonight for Wade Smith, a freshman at SVHS who is currently awaiting a heart transplant at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Born in Slab Fork, WV in 1938, Bill Withers was a singer-songwriter and musician. He won 3 Grammy Awards and was nominated for 6 more. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
