My sources confirm that, yes, Sony will in fact be hosting a PlayStation showcase!
In the future.
At some point.
Maybe this month.
Perhaps next month.
Could also be next year.
Ya know, like, sooner or later-ish.
Report:
Animal Crossing: New Horizons reached 2.68 million retail units sold in Japan within 10 days of release.
This is after hitting 1.88 million during its opening weekend.
Nintendo Switch hardware is now at 13 million consoles sold in the country.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 5M digital copies in March, per SuperData estimates.
Would be the highest console digital unit sales launch ever, passing 2018's CoD: Black Ops 4.
For context, it sold about the same as *combined* launches of Smash Ultimate & Poke SW/SH.
Wow.
Take-Two Interactive:
Grand Theft Auto V has now sold-in over 160M units, up 5M in the quarter ending December.
It's "reached $1B in retail sales faster than any entertainment release in history."
Series overall has sold-in 370M units lifetime.
Nintendo Switch lifetime shipments now total 89.04M units, after selling 4.45M in the 1st fiscal quarter ending June 2021.
Which means it's now officially passed PlayStation 3. Sony's 2006 console is ~ 87.4M at last count.
Nintendo reiterated its annual guidance of 25.5M units.
Curve Digital:
The Ascent generated $5M in revenue during its launch weekend, which is a record for the publisher.
And that doesn't include Xbox Game Pass. This is just unit sales from Xbox + PC, where the company said it was tops on the Steam Global Charts for the weekend.
I can now safely say Forspoken is a totally competent open world action game.
Traversal is awesome. Exploration is fun. Combat is solid, even if I wish there was a melee.
And banter is fine. Not nearly as bad as the internet would have you believe. I'll definitely finish it.
Sony:
Various accessories will work with PS5 games.
The DualShock 4 controller is not one of them.
"We believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."
Sony FY2021 Q1:
PlayStation 5 global shipments reached 10.1M as of June, after moving 2.3M in the quarter.
Compared to 10.4M for PS4 during its first 3 quarters.
Company recently said PS5 passed 10M sold-thru to customers as of July 18th, so it's essentially selling out.
Ubisoft PR: "AC Odyssey is a huge open world with lots of things to do!"
Gamers: "Who has the time to finish all that? It's too much. No buy."
Rockstar PR: "RDR2 is a huge open world with lots of things to do!"
Gamers: "I can't wait to get lost in this game forever. GOTY!"
🤦
"Assassin’s Creed Origins, released in 2017, was originally going to injure or kill off its male hero, Bayek, early in the story and give the player control of his wife, Aya, according to two people who worked on it. But Aya’s role gradually shrank over the course of development"
Yes, it's true Microsoft is paying a lot of money for Activision Blizzard & its IP to attract people to its platform.
Yes, it's true Sony has paid for content exclusivity, thereby keeping games off rival services, to attract people to its platform.
That's called business.
The irony of Sony's reply here in opposition to MS buying ActiBlizz being comments like:
MS would control the new IP it bought.
MS might restrict rivals from content.
MS is incentivizing people to use Xbox.
MS may raise prices on consoles/XGP.
Sony would never do such things!
Phil Spencer on CNBC:
Coronavirus shouldn't impact Series X. More likely to affect software pipeline.
"We're in line with where we thought we'd be. I’d say the bigger unknown is probably the game production."
He is confident, however MS won't force games out if not ready.
Xbox fans: It's awesome that I can play old games!
Sony fans: But no one uses it.
Microsoft: 50% of players have used back compat.
Sony fans: But it's not a selling point.
Sony: PS5 plays PS4 games.
Sony fans: Yes! One of the main reasons to buy a PS5 is back compat!
Me: 🤷♂️
Microsoft:
"We continue to invest in new gaming studios and content to expand our IP roadmap and leverage new content creators.
These unique gaming experiences are the cornerstone of Xbox Game Pass.."
(It's not done spending, that's for sure.)
Xbox: "We don't share console sales anymore because it's all 'bout that content & services."
Also Xbox: "We won't regularly tell you how many people subscribe to or use said services."
Also Also Xbox: "Oh, and we won't ever reveal how profitable our business is either."
🙄
I see an "Xbox Game Pass is bad for sales" narrative is popping up again in the context of Microsoft + Activision Blizzard deal resulting in games like Call of Duty launching into the service.
XGP is complimentary. Additive. I haven't read any data that reveals cannibalization.
Ubisoft:
Games expected in the fiscal year ending March 2022:
Far Cry 6
Rainbow Six Quarantine (It's still called that, huh..)
Riders Republic
The Division Heartland
Roller Champions
Skull and Bones will now be released in fiscal 2022-23 (Between April 2022 and March 2023).
Microsoft:
Gaming revenue increased 16% in FY 2022 Q1. Above estimate of "low double digits."
That's nearly $3.6B in sales for Xbox in the quarter. Which is a record Q1.
Xbox Content & Services rose 2%. Growth in XGP subs & 1st party.
Hardware sales up 166% on strong demand.
Ghost of Tsushima is the fastest-selling new PlayStation IP as measured by digital unit sales at launch, according to Super Data estimates.
It sold approximately 1.9 million units digitally during July.
As a comparison, it took Horizon Zero Dawn two months to reach this amount.
Remedy Entertainment:
Control now has 10 million players. It's reached a "formidable audience."
Condor PvE project is in development. Future "bigger budget" Control game is in early conception phase.
Separately, the AAA project with Epic Games is now in full production.
"Series X is hot, like really hot! It doesn’t make any noise, but damn it’s hot! The console is emitting heat like crazy. It’s almost like a fireplace shaft. You can heat up your flat with it."
Well, that's certainly one way to be the hottest product on the market this holiday.
Sony:
PlayStation 5 lifetime shipments reached 25M after selling-in 3.3M during the quarter ending September (same as last year's fiscal Q2).
Compare that to PS4's 29.4M thru its first 8 quarters.
And congrats PS5! You've now passed the sales of Nintendo GameCube & OG Xbox.
Electronic Arts:
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sold "beyond" projections.
You'll note that the company originally said it expected 6 to 8 million copies sold by the end of March 2020.
Sounds like that's on target at the least, and will be beaten at best.
PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console in the U.S. during September 2021 by units & dollars.
That breaks Nintendo Switch's massive streak of 33 straight months leading by units, dating back to Nov 2018!
PS5 is also the year's best-seller to date on dollar sales.
Per NPD.
Laying down a formal prediction:
Ghost of Tsushima overall review consensus and aggregate scores will be the biggest surprise of 2020. Sucker Punch's latest will far surpass the average guess.
Embargo is tomorrow: 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has passed 10 million digital downloads worldwide on the Nintendo eShop, according to Famitsu.
Previously, you'll remember I shared that Super Data estimated the game sold 5M digital units during its launch month of March.
Electronic Arts upcoming pipeline includes:
July to September 2022: FIFA & Madden NFL.
October to December 2022: Need for Speed, NHL.
January to March 2023: PGA Tour. Then, four unannounced titles: Major IP, Partner Title, Remake & another Sports Title.
What could they be? 🤔
Phil Spencer on IGN:
There isn't one focus. Hardware, services & software are all moving forward.
In terms of software: "I've heard the feedback on the first party."
"We'll talk about a couple more games before the end of this year. We'll talk about Scarlett next year."
#X019
Sony announced it shipped 3.2 million PlayStation 4 units during its 1st quarter 2018, bringing lifetime shipments to 82.2 million.
It's the 10th piece of gaming hardware (inc handhelds) to eclipse 80 million. And Sony's 5th.
Congrats to the team on a successful run this gen.
Biggest takeaway from EA earnings:
Battlefield is no longer the flagship shooter in its portfolio.
It's now firmly Apex Legends.
I find this quite representative of AAA industry shifts at large. Live service, seasonal, battle royale, cosmetics, ongoing revenue, low barriers..
Sony: State of Play today.
Gamers: *Create unrealistic expectations due to equating this to an E3 press conference, thus setting themselves up for major disappointment*
Sony: *Presents promised 10 minutes*
Gamers: So disappointing! How can they do this to us? Liars!
Me: 🤦♂️
On AC Odyssey leads Alexios/Kassandra:
"The team originally proposed making the sister the only playable character, according to four people who worked on the game, until they were told that wasn’t an option. The final product gives players a choice between the two characters."
A misconception I'm seeing in light of layoffs is PlayStation making "record profits."
Sales are at record levels. Last annualized operating profit is the lowest since FY 2019.
Expenses are mounting. Margins are slim. There's a reason for PS Plus & PS5 Digital price increases.
Warner Bros Discovery:
The Last of Us is averaging almost 32M viewers per episode in the U.S.
Most-watched title ever on HBO Max in Europe & LatAm.
Company's total streaming subscriber base rose to 97.6M in March, up 1.6M since December, and this segment is now profitable.
Activision Blizzard:
Call of Duty: Warzone now has 60M players, up from 50M a month ago.
Modern Warfare has sold-thru more copies & has more players than *any* CoD at this point after launch.
Q1 sell-through for MW was the best for the series ever outside of a launch quarter.
Reminder:
While Starfield is important for Xbox, it isn't some make-or-break moment for the business.
Saying so is an exaggeration and an oversimplification of its new model. MS is the least reliant on individual 1st party hits because its most important exclusive is Game Pass.
Nintendo announced that the Switch has reached lifetime sales of 22.86 million units, during its financial report today. This implies 3.19 million units moved this quarter.
For the six month period ending September 2018, Switch unit sales are up almost 4% over the prior year.
Take-Two Interactive:
The Outer Worlds has reached 3 million units sold-in to date.
That's up from 2.5 million as of this time last year, a recent bump driven by the launch of Murder on Eridanos DLC.
Source: Conference Call.
CD Projekt hit a number of impressive milestones today:
5 year anniversary of its flagship title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
It's now the largest gaming publisher in Europe at a market value above $8.7B, surpassing Ubisoft's $8.2B.
Also the biggest company trading in Poland.
Naughty Dog:
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End has over 37 million players to date.
Somehow, the game released 5 years ago already.
(Because we are old.)
Now the question becomes what's next for the series..
Today, Sony announced that there will be games for the PlayStation 5.
"Games for the PS5 that deliver this new gaming experience are being made by both 1st and 3rd party developers, and we plan to introduce a compelling line up of titles soon."
Whew. Glad they cleared that up.
Good. Expose it. Tell the stories.
We need as much reporting as possible on sexual abuse & any misconduct in the industry.
And hearing about Assassin's Creed teams attempting to add playable female characters is beyond frustrating.
Sony:
PlayStation 4 has passed 102.8 million lifetime units shipped, after moving 2.8 million for its quarter ending in September.
This means it's officially passed both the Wii & original PlayStation to become the 2nd best-selling home console ever.
Activision Blizzard:
Call of Duty: MW2 has reached $1B in sell-thru within its first ten days on market.
It's the fastest-selling game in franchise history, and I believe the second quickest selling premium game ever behind only GTAV's $1B generated in 3 days in 2013.
Massive!
@JezCorden
Even assuming Xbox + ABK combined figure, which might be inflated due to double-counting of certain sales, PlayStation's latest fiscal H1 is more than $8B.
¥1,726B * 0.0066092 (JPY to USD 10/31) = $11.4B.
Looks like they are excluding some segments. Not sure of the methodology.
CD Projekt RED:
Continuing its migration to a "dual-franchise" model, those being The Witcher & Cyberpunk.
Definitely sounds like Cyberpunk 2077 is only the beginning for a new series of games/projects.
These will be supplemented by "several independent product lines."
PlayStation 5 returns as the best-selling game console in the U.S. during June 2023.
Measured by revenue and units.
In fact, it's the best June month for PlayStation hardware dollars since June 2008 & unit sales since June 2010.
It's also the year's top seller by both metrics.
Prediction that won't be wrong for another decade:
When the 10 year deals are up & MS makes its Xbox after next, ActiBlizz console/PC games will be exclusive.
Let's be real: Deals were to appease regulators. Beyond that, it's promises. And we know how companies are with those.
Microsoft has won the preliminary injunction battle with The FTC, as Judge Corley denied the regulators' request to block its purchase of ActiBlizz.
Note FTC can appeal the decision, plus there's still the outstanding UK CMA resolution.
Still, it's happening. Sooner than later.
Microsoft $MSFT passed $11.5 billion in gaming revenue over the trailing 12-month period for the 1st time since it began reporting it.
Last quarter was the 1st time it eclipsed $11 billion.
Prior quarter, $10 billion.
(Translation: Don't listen to anyone saying Xbox is dead.)
Activision Blizzard $ATVI
Dividend increasing 9%.
Headcount reducing 8%.
Translation:
Giving more to shareholders, while firing employees.
(Yes, this is wholly reductive. But it's also true.)
I think people are misinterpreting EA's statement on Star Wars BF2. It isn't removing microtransactions. It's delaying them.
It's a "win" for fans being heard, but the fact microtransactions will return *literally* proves that they aren't going anywhere in the broader industry.
Within key European markets, the average gamer is 31 years old.
56% play on PC. Around half play on console. 17% play across a multitude of devices.
Nearly half are female, making up 46%. In fact, 52% of mobile gamers are women.
More at the link below!
Take-Two Interactive:
Red Dead Redemption 2 has reached "nearly" 43M units sold-in globally in December, up from 39M last quarter.
Claims it was the 2nd best-selling title in the U.S. during the last 3 years on dollar sales.
The series overall has reached 65M copies shipped.
Sega:
The next "Ryu ga Gotoku Series Installment," i.e. new Yakuza game, could be out as soon as September if I'm reading this reporting correctly.
The studio previously announced it would be revealed on August 29, so best guess is it's out in the last quarter of calendar 2019.
Microsoft FY 2022 Q4:
Gaming revenue declined 7% in quarter ending June. In-line with estimate.
Implies $3.45B quarterly sales from Xbox, the 2nd best Q4 ever.
Content & Services was down 6%, again in-line with guidance, despite growth in XGP subs.
Hardware sales dipped 11%.
Take-Two Interactive FY 2022 Q2:
Because apparently people can't stop buying it, Grand Theft Auto V has now sold-in 155M units.
That's from 150M last quarter. And before the next gen version, scheduled for March 2022.
Grand Theft Auto series overall at 355M copies lifetime.
Sony's Jim Ryan claims Microsoft's offer of keeping CoD on PlayStation for 3 years beyond the current contract "inadequate on many levels."
I'll just say:
MS didn't have to make this offer.
Would Sony have done the same?
And, if Sony didn't, how would the reaction be different?
Bandai Namco & FromSoftware:
Elden Ring reached a staggering 12M units sold since release in February, including 1M in Japan.
For context, Dark Souls 3 was at 10M.. 4 years after launch.
Absolutely incredible start & milestone. Plenty more to come.
Mortal Kombat X has sold nearly 11 million copies since release in 2015, according to Ed Boon.
It's the best-selling Mortal Kombat game to date.
In comparison, it's estimated 2011's MK9 moved around 5 million units as of 2015.
Each platform holder's idea of how to play its older games:
Sony: Buy our small console or pay for a streaming service that doesn't work very well.
Nintendo: Buy one of our small consoles or pay for a service on our new console.
Microsoft: Own it? Play it on our current console.
Xbox: Here's a gameplay showcase! (With no demos.)
Gamers: Boooo. Give me gameplay.
Epic Games: Here's gameplay running in Unreal Engine 5 on a PS5 devkit! (Like, an actual demo.)
Gamers: Boooo. An engine showcase? No 60FPS? Not until 2021? Where's a real game reveal?
Me:🤦
E3: Gaming's biggest media event of the year!
GamesCom: Gaming's biggest conference of the year!
Nintendo, on a random day in September: *Hold my beer*
#NintendoDirect
AC: Origins done. 75 hours.
Suffice to say: Among my fave games of 2017, one of the top titles in the franchise (moved to 2nd behind II for me) & arguably the most beautiful game I've ever seen. No jokes or complaints here.
Applause to Ubi Montreal & all teams on a masterpiece!
Nintendo:
Metroid Dread reached 2.74 million units sold-in between launch in early October and year-end 2021.
In the span of two months, it's nearly outsold the *lifetime* units of the series' previous best-seller in 2002's Metroid Prime ~ 2.84M.
The Switch in full effect!
Imagine enjoying a game that reviewers didn't, expressing it online and receiving courteous, level-headed replies from others saying that they value your opinion.
More rumors about a new Switch model circling before E3.
This time saying that it would replace the current model, launch in September - October and could be announced in the weeks before E3.
And I swear if it's not called the Super Nintendo Switch, it's a missed opportunity.
Microsoft:
Gaming revenue increased an impressive 50% in FY21 Q3.
Assuming this, quarterly sales from gaming totaled ~ $3.52B. Best Q3 result ever.
Xbox Content & Services rose 34% YoY. Driven by 3rd party, XGP subs & 1st party games.
Hardware rose 232%. Not hard to know why!
Activision Blizzard:
Revenue reached a record $8.8B for the year ending Dec 2021, up from $8.1B.
Note: When adding this to Microsoft's recent record Xbox annual sales, it's $25B.
Combined it's above or roughly equal to Sony's PlayStation business, depending on exchange rate.
Kojima: There's a woman in my game who doesn't speak. Her name will be Quiet.
Gamers: Whoooa.
Kojima: There's a delivery man in my game about connections. I will name him Bridges.
Gamers: Dude, that's way deep. What will he think of next?
Kojima: Diehard Man.
Gamers: LEGEND!
@shinobi602
People will answer Sony because of its likely sequels or Nintendo because of its strong IP.
I'm answering Xbox because I have a feeling its teams are working on the most new, unique projects. Give me that over the predictable any day.
Top-Selling Games of 2018, U.S., Per NPD:
Red Dead Redemption 2
CoD: Black Ops 4

Marvel’s Spider-Man
Far Cry 5
God of War
MH: World
AC: Odyssey

Microsoft:
Based on FY 2022 Q2 gaming sales ~ $5.43B, its current annual revenue from the Xbox division is roughly $16.26B.
That's the first time it's above $16B and an all-time high.
I see ~ 77% from Content & Services.
Here's my usual chart showing rolling yearly sales.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate has surpassed 2.5 million units sold in Japan after moving nearly 260K units last week, per Media Create.
Now at 2.61 million copies.
The remainder of last week's top games (12/31 - 1/6):
Super Mario Party
Pokemon Let's Go
MK8D
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Note:
XSX previews are live.
And this quote 👀
"Switched back to an older X1X briefly during testing, & it was like going from cable internet back to the days of a 56k modem. That’s how much the XSX improves the games you already play every day. Everything just feels better."
Microsoft FY 2022 Q4 Call:
CEO Nadella states MS has sold more Xbox Series X|S consoles life-to-date than any previous generation of Xbox at this point in its cycle.
Also, claims Xbox was the top hardware among next gen consoles in North America for 3 straight quarters now.
PlayStation 5 was the 2nd best-selling hardware in the U.S. during February 2021. Dollar & unit sales.
It's currently the fastest-selling console in history, per NPD Group.
Big sales fit with its overall theme, that's for sure!
(I'll take any excuse to wear out this joke.)
Nintendo announced Switch lifetime sales have increased to 19.67m units as of its quarter ending June, up from 17.79m the previous quarter. Implying 1.88m Switch units sold during April to June.
Total Switch software sales across the platform increased to 86.93m, from 68.97m.
Focus Home Interactive:
Revenue of €79.8 million ($88.4 million) for the 1st half of its fiscal year, up 80%. A record result.
Strong digital distribution of World War Z on consoles, then "successful" launches of A Plague Tale: Innocence & GreedFall.
Reaffirmed its guidance.
Microsoft FY 2023 Q1 Call:
Gaming has experienced usage growth across all platforms. Recent strength in hardware.
PC Game Pass subscription growth of 159% YoY.
More than 20M people have now used Xbox Cloud gaming.
Almost half of Xbox Series S buyers are new to the ecosystem.
Microsoft FY 2023 Q2:
Gaming revenue declined 13% in the 3 months ending Dec. In-line with guidance.
Implies ~ $4.74B in quarterly Xbox sales. The lowest since FY 2020 Q2.
Xbox Content & Services down 12%, again in-line with estimate.
Xbox Hardware sales were also down 13%.
Heard a comment it's "absurd a Microsoft studio would be working on a multi-plat game."
Do gamers seriously not understand development timelines or time in general? Obsidian has been working on Outer Worlds for years. It's not going to suddenly cancel then shift to an exclusive.
