We had been warning about this (

And perhaps we had not thought it would come this fast...
You cannot imagine the euphoria that the ipcc synthesis report is pre-approved in the longest plenary ever!
After 46 hours with a total of 3 hours of sleep...
Sweden's chief epid: “W calculated on more people being sick, but the death toll really came as a surprise to us.”
Curious. How many of us, laypeople&experts, have been warning about the hi death toll to come...?

Even in a 1.5°C scenario with the most extreme levels of CO₂ removal (green), CO₂ emissions decline ~90% at the time of net-zero CO₂ emissions.
It is not possible to offset your way out of the climate problem: deep emission reductions are essential.
The top 1% emits more than 2/3rd of the global population, or 5 BILLION ppl.
If they just halve their emissions - for which who else if not them - global emissions would plummet, without touching the poorer 2/3rd.
Why do we never talk about this?
Finally caught up on some sleep on my way home from the

Very proud of the outcome, esp figure 7!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
the IPCC's Working Group 1 report has been approved, made history in a fully online plenary!
Hundreds of delegates from 140+ countries worked online in impossible hours, and we have an Assessment Report that is much improved as a result of their work!!
Looking at this curve, I do not see any evidence that we have already avoided the worst pathways (4 or 5C by 2100). Am i missing sg?

Very worrying. 60% decline in flying insect populations, just in two decades. Incidentally, in the same period the amount of man-made materials have TRIPLED on Earth, outbeating all living biomass.

This was NOT taken in Alaska, but Cairo. Outside pleasant 25C, indoors jackets, hoods&hats needed not to freeze.
How can we dramatically reduce emissions while providing power for billions more if the richest cannot even give up excessive AC?
"the warming rate of 0.18C/decade since 1970 has almost doubled to roughly 0.3C/decade over the past 15 years. "
Is this within the range of climate variability or signal of accelerated warming?
My concern is it might be too late if we just wait to see
"If we ultimately fail to keep global climate to below 1.5C, then we fight for 1.6C and then 1.7C and then 1.8C – because as scientists we know that every 10th of degree of warming will make a huge difference to the impacts of climate change."
>9,000 cities committed to cut emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, but more than a third haven’t built an inventory of emissions as it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. The new tool can help them calculate much of those emissions at no cost.

fatigue, but we have been working on this for about 6 years!
Why is growth so sacred in the rich world when we have only been able to achieve it in the past decades through planned obsolescence, unreparability by design, frequently changing fashion, billions of marketing rewiring our brains on our "needs", and tricking us into addictions?
Low-cost airlines created crazy new demand for flying. In Budapest many dental centres thrive from e.g. Irish flying here just to have their root treatments done. You can fly to Israel (3.5h) for EUR10. Who is paying the real (full) costs of these trips...?

So much more fun than flying. You get to see so much of your continent.
I wish there were direct train services to much more European destinations!
Why do we so insist on growth when we more and more can only achieve it through forcing ppl to consume what they did not want to: eg thru planned obsolescence, fast changing fashion, agressive marketing, or rewiring their brains thru psychologists to become addict even to death?

The problem is that even at the most optimistic economic growth scenarios, many of them will still lack access to AC even in 2050.
That means, many of these are sentenced to death because with many days beyond wet bulb temperatures, we exceed limits of adaptation
The poorest 50% of EU citizens reduced their consumption based GHG emissions by 32% 1990 - 2015, the richest 10% by just 10%, while the emissions of the richest 1% INCREASED by 7%

According to the

Direct subsidies roughly doubled in a year.
Instead of carbon taxing them, the world still subsidises the fuels whose burning already warmed our climate by 1.2C
Internet use "account for 40% of 1.5C carbon budget, 55% of carrying capacity for mineral &metal resources. Rapid decarbonisation and reducing the use of fresh raw materials in devices (lifetime extension) is paramount"
@GlobalEcoGuy
This is not true. 4-5C scenarios (just by the end of century, let alone afterwards, are fully realistic in IPCC assessment report 6.
Remember, climate will stabilise only when we reach net zero CO2, and that is still very remote
Should this not be banned? The world is on fire; our relationship with nature is resulting in deadly and (economically) devastating pandemics; and we allow people to roast our children this intensively just for fun?

What is the source of this shocking figure,

Very surprising and brave to say the unpopular: the director of the US's leading energy technology Lab

Is this really the best use of our beautiful land...?
We showed in our latest paper (see my pinned tweet) that we could produce more than the total global power demand using only available roofs for PV.
No need to waste our valuable, beautiful land!
"Food systems are responsible for 80% of biodiversity loss, and 80% of all agricultural land is for livestock and its feed, while providing only 20% of calories."
The science is clear & time is running out—we must go from harming our planet to healing it.
We need to rethink the way we live and the way we consume. There is
#OnlyOneEarth
. We must take care of it.
Facts & figures:
#YearInReview
There is now more man-made stuff on the planet by weight than all living organisms, from plankton to whales, estimated to be 1.1tn tonnes. The weight of things as infrastructure phones & plastics will be 3x the biomass on earth by 2040.
Deaths are also soaring. Over 20 deaths/mln/day. More and more young people, without preconditions.
Why are we now worse than almost everyone else in the world? I really do not see what we have done soo wrong. We are vaccinating 2nd most in Europe.
When shall we finally start seriously converting our building sector to
