Today I stand on my ancestors' shoulders ready to serve as the first Native American cabinet secretary. Follow me
@SecDebHaaland
&
@Interior
for updates on how we're building back better, protecting our public lands, & creating an equitable clean energy economy for all Americans.
A voice like mine has never been a Cabinet secretary or at the head of the Department of Interior.
Growing up in my mother’s Pueblo household made me fierce. I’ll be fierce for all of us, our planet, and all of our protected land.
I am honored and ready to serve.
Thank you to the U.S. Senate for your confirmation vote today. As Secretary of
@Interior
, I look forward to collaborating with all of you. I am ready to serve.
#BeFierce
If confirmed, I will work my heart out for everyone. The ranchers and farmers who care deeply for their lands and the people of color whose stories deserve to be heard. I will honor the sovereignty of Tribal nations, and I will be a fierce advocate for our public lands.
A former Secretary of the Interior once proclaimed it his goal to “civilize or exterminate” Indigenous people. I’m a living testament to the failure of that horrific ideology.
I’m here on the shoulders of my ancestors and all the people who have sacrificed.
I'm moments away from taking the stand at my confirmation hearing for Secretary of
@Interior
. I look forward to the discussion with the Senate Energy Committee.
The historic nature of my confirmation is not lost on me, but I will say that it is not about me. I’m no stranger to the struggles many families across America face today. I’ve lived most of my adult life paycheck to paycheck.
The historic nature of my confirmation is not lost on me, but I will say that it is not about me. Rather, I hope this nomination would be an inspiration for Americans - moving forward together as one nation and creating opportunities for all of us.
Let's get one thing clear. Women don't need permission to celebrate their accomplishments.
@DrBiden
is an accomplished woman, and yes, I will refer to our next
#FLOTUS
as
#DrBiden
.
I carry my life experiences with me everywhere I go. It’s those experiences that give me hope for the future. If an Indigenous woman from humble beginnings can be confirmed as Secretary of the Interior, our country holds promise for everyone.
#BeFierce
The Interior Department manages our public lands to make sure we protect them, honor them, & preserve them for future generations.
This was all Indigenous land, once — so it's ironic that we've never had a Native American Interior Secretary.
I would be honored to be the first.
My life experiences give me hope for the future. If an Indigenous woman from humble beginnings can be confirmed as Secretary of the
@Interior
, our country and its promise still holds true for everyone.
Let it be known:
Our Interior Department will fight to address climate change and environmental injustice.
We will empower communities who have shouldered the burdens of environmental negligence.
And we will ensure that our decisions will once again be driven by science.
I have pieced together health care for me and my child as a single mom, and at times relied on food stamps to put food on the table. It’s because of these struggles that I fully understand the role Interior must play in the President’s plan to build back better.
Right now my heart is with George Floyd’s daughter and with his family, and with many others. I want so badly for things to change. Justice must be a reality for people who haven’t ever known it.
#BlackLivesMatter
I believe we all have a stake in the future of our country, and that everyone shares a common bond: our love for the outdoors and a desire and obligation to keep our nation livable for future generations. Thank you to the Senate ENR Committee for their vote of confidence today.
BREAKING: The Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources has voted to move Deb Haaland's Interior nomination to the full U.S. Senate. The vote Thursday included 11 in favor and 9 opposed.
Last week I announced my endorsement of my friend
@ewarren
for President. She isn't afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Elizabeth is the leader we need right now more than ever.
As a single mom, I volunteered at my daughter's preschool in order to afford tuition. I’ve relied on food stamps, lived paycheck-to-paycheck, & put myself through college/law school. I would be the first Native American woman elected to Congress, here'a why it matters.
#nmpol
Whether your ancestors have been here for hundreds of years or you are a new citizen, know this: Whether we vote, and how we vote, will determine if our nation’s promise of social, racial, and environmental justice will outlast us.

At 10:00 AM EST, my confirmation hearing to be Sec. of
@Interior
will resume. Yesterday I stood on my ancestors' shoulders, told my story, & outlined how my experiences as an Indigenous woman from humble beginnings will lead the department. I look forward to the conversations.
When I accepted the nomination to be Secretary of Interior, I did so on the shoulders of my ancestors & all who have come before me in this fight. I stand ready to serve & address the issues facing our country, public lands, & tribal nations. I look forward to the work ahead.
I believe that every one of us – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents – shares a common bond: our love for the outdoors and a desire and obligation to keep our nation livable for future generations.
Elizabeth has been a great friend to me, and more importantly a great partner for Indian Country. That’s why I’m proud to endorse
@ewarren
for President!
I vow to lead the
@Interior
Department ethically, and with honor and integrity.
✅ I will listen to and work with members of Congress on both sides of the aisle.
✅ I will support the Interior’s public servants and be a careful steward of taxpayer dollars.
Thank you to the Senate Energy Committee for the discussion and questions over the past two days during my confirmation hearings. I thank you for your time and If confirmed, I will listen to all of the people represented by members of this Committee and this Congress.
Today, I held a virtual roundtable with Tribal leaders. It’s the start of
@joeBiden
’s & my commitment to
listening to our Indigenous communities as we work to address environmental injustice and live up to this country’s trust responsibility.
Tonight the people of New Mexico have chosen hope over fear, love over hate, community over division, and I am so honored that New Mexican’s have chosen me to serve in our nation’s 117th Congress.
#nmpol
Today we celebrate our Indigenous cultures. We take time to honor our ancestors and give thanks for their contributions to this country. On this

As a Native American woman who’s ancestral homeland is under attack from the Fossil Fuel Industry: I 100% support a Green New Deal and a Congressional Climate Commission.

Today, I had the chance to stop by my father's grave in Arlington National Cemetery and pay my respect to those who served our Country. I will always work to ensure that we are fighting for the benefits that all Veterans are owed.
Tonight marks the start of Kwanza, where we honor love, community, and family. To all celebrating, I wish you light, happiness, and peace in the coming year.
I stand here today … a proud 35th generation New Mexican and one of the first Native American women ever elected to Congress. I am a symbol of our resilience — as the embodiment of America’s progress as a nation.

I don't look like most people in Congress. My life is different, too. I pushed through college & law school as a single mom & I'm 30 years sober, but struggle made me fierce. I'm running for reelection to continue giving a voice to those that have never been heard.
#BeFierce
I know what it’s like to be on food stamps, what it’s like to teach my daughter to ride the public bus, what it’s like to piece together health care. When you’ve lived struggle, you can identify more with the struggles of average Americans.
@sharicedavids
I say the president – who worships Andrew Jackson, who coddles white supremacists and defends Vladimir Putin, who cages children, and freely admitted to assaulting women is no match FOR A WOMAN WITH A PLAN.

“Big, structural change” isn’t just a slogan.
It’s what I’ve fought for my whole career. It’s a value that will be the driving force of my presidency. It’s a mission—with plans to back it up.
Join us. Vote today. Let’s do it together.
My heart goes out to the families and the LGBTQ community, who are deeply affected by the findings around the death of Roxsana Hernández. Everyone, regardless of identity, race, ethnicity, or place of origin, must be treated with respect and compassion. Humanity demands this.
So proud to share the room with
@Malala
, recipient of the 2018 Gleitsman Activist Award. When asked what she would say to the 60 Members of Congress in the audience on refugees, Malala said “don’t hit them with tear gas.”
Representation matters, and for the first time in our country’s history, little girls and women of color everywhere can see someone who looks like them as our
@VP
. Thank you,
@KamalaHarris
, for being fierce and shattering that glass ceiling for all women.
With my friend
@sharicedavids
. Along the campaign trail I often said Congress has never heard a voice like mine. It’s true, and they’ve never heard one like hers either. With your help, there will be not one, but two Native American women in Congress in 2019.
#befierce
In 2018, I called on Congress to immediately address the critical unmet needs in Indian Country to ensure Native Americans get the full equity we’ve been fighting for.
Now, I’m proud to stand alongside
@ewarren
to build a brighter future for Native communities.
Washington is failing Native communities, and it's time to fulfill our obligations to Tribal Nations. Today I’m announcing ideas to ensure that tribal sovereignty and our trust and treaty obligations are binding legal and moral principles—not just slogans.
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. Today we give thanks, but above all else, we show the spirit of Christmas by demonstrating goodwill to all. I hope everyone has a safe and Merry Christmas.
✅ I will ensure that the Interior Department’s decisions are based on science.
✅ I will honor the sovereignty of Tribal nations and recognize their part in America’s story.
✅ And I will be a fierce advocate for our public lands.
Native Americans are more than
”Something Else,” and when we vote, we influence elections. Right now, we’re seeing that voice echo in states like Arizona, New Mexico, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
Wishing my dear friend, fierce woman, enduring leader, master organizer
@DoloresHuerta
a very happy birthday. Thank you so much for the light you bring to all of us. 🎂❤️
DON’T MESS WITH MAMA!
“I don't hate anybody…As a Catholic, I resent your using the word hate in a sentence that addresses me. I don't hate anyone…So, don't mess with me when it comes to words like that."

I’m in Colorado with volunteers who have been DREAMING BIG and FIGHTING HARD to elect

#MyNameIs
“Crushed Turquoise” translated from the Keres language. Like the color of the sky or a deep blue ocean. Before colonization, women were equals and I strive to be a voice for them. This is likely above Sen. Perdue’s head.

"I lived in a world where abortion was illegal and all I can say is some women got lucky, some women didn’t, but they all went through hell. We’re not going back. Not now and not ever." -

One of the reasons why I'm on
#TeamWarren
Look who I ran into.
@KaiKahele
will be just the second Native Hawaiian to serve in Congress. Our caucus is growing, and I can't wait to work with you, Kai.
You can't underestimate the power of being on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. A powerful moment when Reps. Debra Haaland (NM) and Veronica Escobar (TX) comfort Rep. Lisa Rochester (Del) after she broke down listening to Rep. John Lewis recount his exp on Bloody Sunday. 📸
@CapehartJ
There are a lot of national emergencies facing Americans right now I'd like to spend billions to fix:
1. Climate change.
2. Child care, because it costs more $$ than college tuition in far too many places.
3. Health care.
I supported
@JoeBiden
because I know that he’ll take climate change seriously.
A Biden/Harris administration will:
🌎 Rejoin the Paris Climate accord,
♻️ Work to cut emissions,
🌐 Convene global leaders,
🏭 Reverse Energy Rollbacks and,
📜 Address both climate and COVID-19
A few things the Biden administration may do early on to address climate change:
- Rejoin the Paris Agreement
- Convene global leaders
- Reverse energy rollbacks
- Make climate part of pandemic relief
- Sign executive orders to cut emissions
People told me the CFPB could never happen, but it did. I was proud to fight alongside President
@BarackObama
for middle-class families. I know how to fight—and I know how to win.
My mother raised me to be fierce. My daughter continues to inspire me every day.
On

we celebrate the women who paved the way for us and the women who are building a brighter future. Join me in celebrating the strong women in your life today!
I’m beaming with pride to see that Mary Golda Ross, the first Native American female engineer, is being featured on our currency! The new $1 coin honors the brilliant Native Americans who have contributed to our Space program.
#RepresentationMatters
We need to confront the racist legacy of redlining head-on. My housing plan creates a first-of-its-kind down-payment assistance program to help families living in formerly redlined neighborhoods buy a home.
I love seeing so many Native folks participating. Our ancestors would be proud of how far we've come. Thanks to them, our voice is being heard!

@JoeBiden
ran on the promise to unite our country and to make his cabinet look like America, and that is precisely what he's done. Joe Biden's administration is a melting pot of cultures and public servants ready and eager to serve the American people.
As the first Native American Cabinet Secretary in our nation’s history, Congresswoman Haaland will be a true steward of our national parks, natural resources, and all of our lands.
