RI State Representative for District 7 (Mt. Pleasant/Valley/Elmhurst) || Universal Healthcare, Fund RIPTA, and a $20 Minimum Wage ||
@TheRWA4EVER
HYPE Champion
I am proud to support all the laborers involved in the AFSCME 3299 Union strike against the UC system.
It is unacceptable our laborers are cleaning classrooms, cooking meals etc. WITHOUT being paid a living wage, in addition to the discriminatory environment they have to endure.
@elonmusk
Elon, as someone who hasn’t commented on this matter yet, please step down as the Head of Twitter.
I’ve talked to many neighbors and people across Rhode Island who feel uncomfortable using this platform based on your decisions and statements.
Thank you!
Today I woke up to a broken window and a tire removed from my car. Every other overnight parked car was spotless.
Over the last 9 months since running for office, there have been several times where I’ve been followed home and have had my tire slashed.
I will not be intimated.
Today, I experienced one of my proudest moments as a legislator.
A constituent informed me that he just paid $40 for his monthly supply of insulin medication, as opposed to the $100 he regularly paid.
This is the result of a bill we passed last Spring to lower insulin costs!
Growing up to a single immigrant mother, I understand the struggle of poverty.
Those experiences influenced my path as an organizer for social change. I’m proud to believe everyone deserves economic dignity.
Alongside groups of advocates, we showed that working people agree.
Congratulations to
@DavidMoralesRI
, who just beat a 6-year incumbent State Rep!
As part of a left coalition w/ groups like
@reclaimri
&
@sunrisemvmt
,
@ProvDSA
organized to elect the youngest Latino ever to the state legislature, while helping reelect fellow DSAer
@SamuelWBell
!!
Yesterday, over 500 neighbors showed up to vote because they believe in systemic change.
While these results are not yet final, I’m incredibly proud of our grassroots campaign! For 10 months, we tirelessly organized and helped empower our neighbors into the electoral process.
Thank you! I will always be proud of my roots in the 831 (Soledad).
Preparing to be the youngest Latino to serve in any State Legislature is an important responsibility that I do not take lightly. I hope to make us all proud by fighting for the needs of working people!
CONGRATULATIONS! I want to personally congratulate
@DavidMoralesRI
, a young progressive City of
#Soledad
native, who won a Rhode Island State Representative seat! At 22, he will be the youngest state legislator in the country when he gets sworn in on January 5, 2021!
#FELICIDADES
For the record: Early Voting and Voting by Mail helps encourage people to participate in the democratic process as it is more accessible.
Anyone calling to end this accessible and inclusive process is advocating for voter suppression.
Thank you — we did this! I’m proud our grassroots campaign was empowered by
@ProvDSA
volunteers.
Now we create systemic change where everyone earns a living wage, receives guaranteed healthcare, and a quality public education!
Despite being a large, private university with an endowment worth over $300 million —
@RISD
has failed to offer a fair labor agreement with their ESSENTIAL custodians, movers, and groundskeepers.
Our frontline workers deserve living wages, shame on

#PowerToTheWorkers
Here we go, I just introduced my first bill of the year — Repealing our State’s Unfair Pre-Emption Law that Prevents Cities and Towns from setting their own Minimum Wage!
(1/4)
Today we had a powerful grassroots demonstration at the State House as our communities mobilized to demand that our State Legislature finally take action to address gun violence and adopt common-sense gun-safety measures!

Mt. Pleasant High School, a Providence public school, currently has 35 staff members in quarantine due to recent COVID exposure. All else is normal.
Less than a mile away, La Salle Academy (a private school) had 1 teacher test positive & they immediately transitioned to virtual.
From being raised by a single mother in a rural town to the State House, I’m grateful for this journey and every person who has helped me.
As a Representative, my responsibility will always be to fight for working people and socioeconomic justice!
This is a national trend. Each time a school department decides to reopen, it results in high levels of COVID exposure forcing students to quarantine.
In RI we are seeing a slow rise in COVID cases along with high demands for testing. We must protect our families and teachers.
Almost 2,000 K-12 students in Mississippi have been quarantined in the state due to possible exposure to Covid-19, according to the state's department of health

on Sunday,

reports.
Across all levels of government, we need more people like
@JohnFetterman
. Sen. Fetterman and his wife,
@giselefetterman
, are such humble and caring advocates for working people and mental health.
Thank you both for your time — we hope y’all enjoy the beauty of Rhode Island! ⚓️
Tonight, we finally legalized recreational cannabis in Rhode Island!
Most importantly, this legislation includes state-initiated automatic expungement, social equity funding, and fair licensing.
Unlike most states before us, we are immediately taking action on these issues!
.
@DavidMoralesRI
: Compared to the other 18 states...they often waited years after passage before addressing issues of fair licensing, social equity, and expungement. Meanwhile, Rhode Island is urgently acting on this issue now.
#LegalizeRI
Imagine if we housed every homeless person in RI inside our vacant hotels that are losing money and furloughing employees.
The State can contract with the hotels and also contract mental health specialists.
While it might be too “creative” for some, remember, solutions exist.
Now more than ever, we need a resurgence of the Labor Movement. Through labor unions, working people are able to earn liveable wages & adequate benefits.
Today less than 11% of our workforce are a part of one. I will always be committed to supporting our unions & their growth.
Adolfo Gonzalez is nearly 60 and he is not a native English speaker.
Yet and still, he persevered and earned his bachelor's degree.
The best part?
He is going to pay it forward as a teacher and focus on addressing the achievement gap among the Latinx community.

This is State Rep. David Morales. Over the last 2 years, he has successfully fought to expand healthcare to every child across RI, fully fund our public library system, and establish the strongest whistleblower protections in the country.
This is State Rep. David Morales. He is in a Seth Magaziner political ad. David is a Democratic Socialist that has called for cutting police funding, removing police from schools, and ejecting police from the AFL-CIO.
When Seth says he supports the police don't believe him.
Rent is due in one week.
Just a friendly reminder that our State Government could cancel rent and mortgage payments for the duration of the COVID pandemic if they wanted to.
In less than a year since acquiring control of our public utility services from National Grid, RI Energy has proposed historic rate hikes for electric and natural gas services. Currently, RI Energy is proposing a rate hike of 47% for electricity and 15% for natural gas!

This officer should be fired and charged immediately. He intentionally hit a man on his moped.
Whether the person on the moped antagonized the officer beforehand is irrelevant.
It’s official.
#CoverAllKids
has passed, so moving forward, all children from lower-income families will be guaranteed healthcare coverage, regardless of immigration status.
This is a historic investment and a step towards achieving universal healthcare for our communities!
Instead of continuing to reference me in a disparaging way during debates,
@AllanFungRI
should be more concerned about the corporate interests he takes money from, such as the Pharmaceutical and Fossil Fuel Industry.
Fung is just another politician who is bought and owned.
Despite multiple calls to the Mayor’s Office from residents and officials, this DANGEROUS pothole between Chalkstone Avenue and Violet Street is still here, with even more potholes near Nathanael Greene Middle School.
For the safety of everyone, this needs to be addressed ASAP!
Between all of this instability caused by the closure of the Washington Bridge, my sympathy is for the working people of our state who have no option to work from home and have to endure hours of traffic for a job that does not pay them enough to keep up with the cost of living..
25 and grateful.
Between a caring circle of friends and neighbors, my son Mochi, a loving partner, my alter-ego as pro-wrestling’s biggest villain (Commissioner Morales), the thrill of cosplaying as Spidey, and my progressive work in the legislature — here’s to another year! 💙
In Rhode Island, the top-bracket income tax rate for people with incomes of over $500k was 9.99% before 2007.
Since then, the top-bracket income tax rate has been 5.99%. So today we have millionaires paying the SAME income tax rate as a working family.
This needs to change!
Taxing the rich isn’t radical. It isn’t even new.
The current top-bracket tax rate is 37%.
But in 1965, it was 70%.
In the 1950s, it was over 90%.
NOT taxing the rich is what’s new.
Families and teachers strongly disagree.
Even before COVID our public schools have been divested from. As a result, our school buildings are crumbling as they have not seen renovations in decades.
Teachers, students, and parents should not have to fear for their health.
We need to override Brown University’s State Charter from 1764 that allows them to be exempt from taxation.
Annual initiatives and a dependence on wealthy donors is not sustainable for our City.
Brown is a wealthy private institution, they can afford to pay their fair share.
NEW: It's true that Brown University can’t single-handedly save Providence schools. But it does seem like Brown, with its $4.7 billion endowment, with all the talent and expertise it produces, could be willing and able to try a little harder.
Last night, after 20 years of grassroots advocacy, we finally passed legislation to provide ALL people with the ability to earn a Driver’s License (regardless of their immigration status).
[1/5]
We did it! HB
#5257
has passed committee and will be making its way onto the House Floor for a vote.
No longer will our people be discriminated against renting property because of their source of income.
Thank you
@Rep_Williams9
and every advocate who has made this possible!
The
@RIStatePolice
just released personal information (home addresses) of protestors who were arrested last night.
This is harmful and wrong. I do not recall any other time where they have intentionally released such information across social media.
Please report their posts.
Amazon does not need or deserve any tax-break, especially when you consider how they treat their employees and their enormous wealth.
They can afford to pay their fair share of taxes just like any other business in Rhode Island.
I’m proud to announce that I’m running for RI State Representative!
It’s time for a political revolution in OUR state where we prioritize the needs of the working-class and encourage all residents to be civically engaged. ✊🏽
7 months ago, I announced my candidacy for State Representative in District 7 (Mt. Pleasant & Elmhurst).
Since then, I have received support from countless neighbors because we are the campaign advocating for our working families, youth & elderly.
Today, I officially declared!
White Electric Coffee on Westminster will likely become a unionized workplace and may even turn into a ‘worker co-op’ (workers own the business).
This is huge!
I am incredibly supportive of these efforts and I hope we can make this reality for other workplaces across our state.
LIST OF NEW RHODE ISLAND LAWS STARTING IN 2024:
LABOR RIGHTS:
• Penalties for wage theft has been strengthened to a felony and potential imprisonment.
• The minimum wage has increased to $14.00 per hour.
[1/10]
My name is David Morales.
At age 24, I have the honor of serving the working people of Rhode Island as a progressive State Representative AND an evil Pro-Wrestling Champion!
Here’s my story:
David Patten should resign. He should NOT be receiving an annual salary of $175,000 made up of tax-payer dollars along with benefits.
Now just imagine if a worker earning minimum wage behaved like this, they’d be fired immediately.
I'm proud to announce I've just introduced my first bill for the 2021 Legislative Session!
House Bill 5029 will urgently provide 'Hazard Pay' (150% of regular pay) to ALL our Essential Healthcare Workers throughout the duration of COVID-19.
This weekend I spoke with 4 neighbors about increasing rent prices and the toll it is having on working people. We agreed that it was our government's responsibility to address this.
Therefore, I'm excited to share that I will be introducing a Rent Stabilization bill this week!
We’re back for another Legislative Session to:
💰 Raise the Minimum Wage
🚍 Fully Fund RIPTA
🏥 Increase Medicaid Rates
🎓 Invest in School Social Workers & Psychologists
🍎 Guarantee Healthy School Meals for All Students
💲 Eliminate PayDay Lending
🩺 Reform Medical Debt
Hi Dan — are you also sorry about the dishonest letter you just sent to the community where you: insulted my age, lied about my desire to tax the elderly, and lied about my fundraising numbers?
I understand you’re scared of our grassroots campaign, but this is just low.
In case y’all missed it, Rep.
@BHenriesRI
rocked it on the floor last night during our floor debate regarding the Equality in Abortion Coverage Act 👏🏽✊🏽
In response to Anti-Trans amendments and fear-mongering rhetoric, she fought back!
I'm absolutely humbled to earn this endorsement.
All our working people in RI deserve a high quality of life with guaranteed healthcare, living wages, and affordable housing.

State Representative, up for election on Tuesday, September 8th in District 7 in Providence, RI.
David is a
@ProvDSA
member running to bring working-class representation to our Rhode Island's government. [1/x]
Yesterday, we introduced HB
#5268
which would establish a Medicare-for-All healthcare system in RI.
Today, alongside
@ProvDSA
we canvassed our community to inform neighbors about this bill and get them engaged.
This is grassroots organizing and it is how we create change.
Congratulations to our very own Mt. Pleasant Councilor,
@MSanchezPVD
for passing his first Ordinance out of committee!
We’re now a step closer to prohibiting the unnecessary development of Self Storage Facilities which have continued to take advantage of our Providence community
We just had a lobbyist call Hazard Pay, “Premium Pay”.
That tells you everything you need to know. Additional compensation for risking your health is not a privilege or a ‘premium’. It’s basic fairness.
Let's be clear, if we are going to legalize cannabis then it is necessary we:
- Expunge cannabis-related criminal records
- Have a sales tax that is not regressive
- Direct tax-revenue towards education & social programs
- Provide BIPOC communities resources to enter the industry
Vermont is now the 11th state to legalize cannabis.
In RI, it is time we:
- Legalize cannabis
- Expunge cannabis-related criminal records
- Direct tax-revenue towards education & social programs
- Provide BIPOC communities resources to enter the industry
If a 17 year old person of color crossed state lines, armed himself with an illegally acquired assault rifle, and murdered two people — they would be in prison for life without parole (or the death penalty).
That is the harsh reality and it hurts.
My name is David Morales, I’m a 23-year-old democratic socialist State Representative and the ‘heel’ Commissioner of the Renegade Wrestling Alliance!
When I’m not advocating for universal healthcare — I’m taking bodyslams and diving off the top rope.
It’s official.
Rhode Island now has the strongest Whistleblower Labor Protections in the entire country!
Thank you to every rank-and-file union member that advocated for this law.
No longer will our workers fear any form of retaliation for reporting workplace violations. ✊🏽
Today was a monumental day as we passed legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15!
Growing up to a single immigrant mom who worked multiple minimum wage jobs; I know the impact these higher wages are going to have on the thousands of working people in Rhode Island.
As a Brown University Alumni and Providence Legislator: this is disingenuous.
If Brown truly wanted to contribute to our community, then they would pay their fair share of taxes just like every other working person and small business.
BrownU officials respond to
@DavidMoralesRI
's bills:
"Legislative efforts such as these tend to overlook that Brown provides extensive contributions to the community we call home in significant areas that meet public need and offset the need for greater public resources."
More:
National Grid is currently proposing rate hikes for utilities. Under their proposal, the average customer would see their bill increase by nearly 10%.
This is an absolute shame, we are literally in a *pandemic* and thousands are unemployed.
We need to address this greed.
Happening in fifteen minutes! (9:30am, 8/31) Log on to a Zoom public hearing with the PUC to let them know you oppose a rate hike during a pandemic! Link: More info below
Here’s the reality: if wages had kept up with worker productivity, the Minimum Wage would be over $23
Specifically, in Rhode Island, a single parent working full-time needs to earn $37 an hour to cover their family’s basic needs.
A $20 Minimum Wage isn’t radical!
We are actively watching the abuse of human rights — innocent people are being murdered, families are being separated, and the violence only continues to get worse. This is inhumane.
We cannot turn a blind eye.
#FreePalestineNow
Thank you to all our Providence Public School teachers who are forced to teach in freezing classrooms due to a lack of heating and poor building conditions.
Our youth and educators deserve so much better. They deserve meaningful investments from our city and state.
I understand this is a city initiative, but remember it would only cost about $12 million a year to have FREE Public Transportation!
Meanwhile, this 'splash park' with limited use would be $140 million...
A young man of color, Jhamal Gonsalves, was intentionally hit with a car by a police officer.
Since then, the officer has been placed on paid “administrative duty”.
Meanwhile, Jhamal is still in a coma from the officer’s attack.
Our BIPOC communities will not stand for this.
Let's be clear, Rep. Justin Price must resign immediately. Through his actions and untruthful rhetoric, he has not only enabled domestic terrorism and violence -- he has contributed to it.
This is not controversial, all our communities deserve better from their officials.
Congratulations to
@WeAreRIEnergy
and the RI Public Utilities Commission for successfully enacting a 47% increase on electricity services (a historic rate hike).
As a result, poor people, working families and middle-class households will suffer. This did NOT have to happen!
#BREAKING
The Public Utilities Commission votes to approve an energy rate increase in RI.
Customers do have the option to defer a portion of the increase from winter payments to summer. RI Energy says help is available for residents who need financial assistance
@wpri12
Thank you! As the youngest graduate of the MPA program, it was definitely a challenge, but I was fortunate to have supportive staff and colleagues.
Now it is time to apply those public policy skills in a meaningful way that will improve the lives of working people!
A few nights ago, we closed out the 2022 Legislative Session. This also means I’ve now completed my first term!
In that time, I’m proud to have introduced & passed the following laws:
- Cover all Kids: Guarantees healthcare coverage to every lower-income child in RI
[1/8]
While knocking on doors the last 4 days, I continue to hear from our neighbors: “What is our State Government doing to address gun violence?”
I feel disappointed sharing that despite having 5 bills ready to pass, we have yet to take action.
Our communities are concerned!
Simple Idea: if a public school district ever wants to propose the closure of a school or a school building, they should be required to share a public report explaining their reasoning and most importantly, take the time to engage with students, families, and staff!
Brown University should pay their share of taxes and contribute to Providence just like every other working person, family, senior, and small business.

To all my friends and neighbors across Mt. Pleasant, Valley, and Elmhurst who have become my second family — THANK YOU!
It’s a special feeling to have earned over 80% of the vote as I consider it a sign of affirmation from our community 💙
Complaining?
Or teachers expressing valid concerns that testing should be postponed until conditions are safe and COVID testing is readily available for students and staff?
@ProJo
— words matter.
Judge LaSalle has a long history of being anti-choice and anti-union. As a result, hundreds of organizations, labor unions, and officials have come out to oppose his nomination.
So why is Rep. Jeffries using his platform to advocate for him?
"Judge Hector Lasalle is highly qualified to be the chief judge of the state of New York. Period. Full stop,"
@RepJeffries
says, adding LaSalle should be given the same rights as every other chief judge nominee to get a vote in the Senate.
Yesterday, Beyond Wrestling finally returned to our beautiful City of Providence to host
#FeteForever
at Fete Music Hall!
THANK YOU to mega wrestling stars — Ruby Soho, Alex Shelley, John Silver, and Mark Sterling for performing in some incredible matches for our working people.
Serious question for Democrats who identify as ‘Moderate’ or ‘Conservative’:
In terms of policy (not rhetoric or speeches), when has the Biden Administration moved “too far to the left”?
On days like these I feel empowered and grateful to hear directly from community members across various advocacy spaces who recognize and appreciate the work I’ve been focused on, inside the State House and across our neighborhood. Thank you so much.
Last week, we unanimously passed HB
#5196
to limit monthly out-of-pocket expenses for Insulin at $40 — one of the lowest rates in the entire country!
Given that over 80,000 RI adults have diabetes, 10% of our adult population, this is a major victory for our working families!
“I do not support rent stabilization, it has been a failure in other cities…it is failed public policy” —
@brettpsmiley
However, I will not cite any specific examples and will instead lean on rhetoric.
Let's be clear, this is not a random tax increase.
In 2006, our State cut income taxes for the wealthiest people from 9.99% to 5.99% (the same as a middle-class person). Since then, we have lost over a billion dollars in tax-revenue.
It is time we repeal these cuts!
Thank you so much for showing up to advocate against an austerity budget, Alex!
For the record, most of my wardrobe is from thrift shopping and the clearance rack at Marshalls haha.
Not only did representative elect
@DavidMoralesRI
speak passionately about the absurdity of cutting Medicaid during a pandemic, he also did it while being the most fashionable guy there.
#ReclaimRI
As stated tonight, this year’s state budget will guarantee healthcare coverage to ALL Rhode Island children (regardless of immigration status).
Thank you
@GovDanMcKee
!
Sen.
@SANDRISCANO
and I look forward to codifying
#CoverAllKids
into law. This is truly life-changing…
This is historic.
Through the passage of this bill, Rhode Island will now have some of the *strongest* Whistleblower Protection Labor laws in the entire country!
All our workers deserve to be protected from retaliation when they report workplace misconduct and violations.
Now that I’m officially sworn in as a State Rep, it is time to pass policies that will help our working families recover from COVID-19.
Therefore, I’ve started the ‘Legislative Advocacy Support Network’ to help pass these policies with community support!
I just want to remind us that there are more substantive ways to provide economic relief to working people and families aside from minor reductions in taxes — lowering prescription drug costs, increasing wages, stabilizing the cost of rent, and limiting utility rate hikes.
