I wrote this letter recently to my friends in the antiwar and anti-nuclear movements. I see it’s being circulated, so I’ve decided to share it here. For all of you working on these issues, thank you, and please keep going!
To
@POTUS
and
@TheJusticeDept
: Stop the extradition of Assange. I am as indictable as he is on the exact same charges. I will plead "not guilty" on grounds of your blatantly unconstitutional use of the Espionage Act. Let's take this to the Supreme Court.
EXCLUSIVE: “Let me tell you a secret… I had possession of the all the Chelsea Manning information before it came out in the press” - Pentagon Papers whistleblower
Daniel Ellsberg says he was given leaked US diplomatic cables “as a backup” by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange
All the young activists rising up give me hope as I leave my life. As the movement against the Vietnam War showed, young people can save lives when they make their care known in action. Keep going. The world is in your hands.
Not one official has been prosecuted for crimes by the US during the 20-year “War on Terror." Only whistleblowing officials like
@Thomas_Drake1
,
@JohnKiriakou
, Reality Winner, Daniel Hale,
@xychelsea
and
@snowden
who exposed these crimes have been prosecuted...
I join all defenders of freedom of the press in demanding that the Biden administration drop the unconstitutional indictment of Julian Assange and accept--not appeal--the decision of the British judge not to extradite him.
The American press has remained in denial for 40 years--since my case--that the Espionage Act has wording that could be aimed directly at them. Now they're staring down the barrel of that Act, which could be used against American journalists and publishers for doing journalism.
Pentagon Papers whistleblower
@DanielEllsberg
says Julian Assange's extradition trial puts U.S. journalists at risk. "The American press is staring right down the barrel at the use of the Espionage Act against American journalists and publishers for doing journalism."
Biden should drop his appeal to extradite Julian Assange and dismiss all charges against him, on the new disclosures that Assange has been subjected to the same governmental crimes that led to the dismissal of my own prosecution half a century ago. 1/
A "human error" like yesterday’s in Hawaii could, at any time, end nearly all human life, by triggering the US or Russian Doomsday Machines. It is a human error ever to have brought these systems into existence. Either they go, or we will.
As fun as it is to read four-hour experts on Hawaii's nuclear false alarm, if you're curious to learn from one who literally helped write our nuclear war plans, the father of American whistleblowing,
@DanielEllsberg
, just published a tell-all:
Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the day I started copying the Pentagon Papers. My older son
@RobertEllsberg
was 13 when he helped me for several nights in that action of whistleblowing civil disobedience. This helped shape his life of right livelihood, as described here:
Whistleblowing is about truth-telling, says
@RobertEllsberg
. And he should know, since he helped his father,
@DanielEllsberg
, one of our country's most significant whistleblowers so far. My story:
The first US prosecution of a publisher, Assange, for truth-telling journalism now pends his extradition from the UK, the first of many unless Biden does what he should: drop the DOJ appeal now to extradite Assange. My piece with Alice Walker and Chomsky:
I admire and thank the whistleblower. I hope the dozen or so witnesses who heard the president commit a crime on the phone will end their complicity in cover-up by telling the truth to Congress, as this brave person did.
Top Secret plans and presidential decisions (not yet declassified) to initiate nuclear war against China in defense of Taiwan in 1958 were just revealed by me to the
@nytimes
.
Whatever Assange is guilty of, I'm guilty of- and will be again. Biden must drop the attempt to extradite Assange and should cancel the standing indictment against him, which erases First Amendment freedom of the press.
SAVE THE DATE: The Ellsberg family will host an online public memorial and celebration of Daniel Ellsberg on Sunday, 10/22, from 1-3 PM Pacific / 4-6 PM Eastern. A livestream link will be posted on this profile beforehand. We look forward to celebrating Dan’s life with you.
I had the honor and pleasure of being on a panel with Alice Walker and Noam Chomsky opposing the extradition to the US of Julian Assange (whose extradition hearing starts tomorrow). 1/
The best statement on the clear intent of the Trump and Biden administrations to see Julian Assange, who committed no crime, die in custody, under conditions amounting to torture:
How dare Biden lecture a

video (it's all worthwhile- mine starts at 46min):
💯 Daniel absolutely rejected what he called the "Ellsberg Good / Assange, Manning, Snowden Bad" media narrative that used him as a foil against them. Any journalist advancing this story should at least have the honesty to note that Daniel thoroughly rejected it -Michael E. 🧵⬇️
Tv Pundits and journalists who rightly praise & celebrate
@DanielEllsberg
& yet in the same breath have the gaul to attack other whistleblowers he inspired & spent his life supporting & defending - are the worst sort of hypocrites.
Worse still - they arrogantly & smugly use…
Here are Daniel Ellsberg's final thoughts on what he called "my main concern in life," the danger of nuclear war. An interview with

@RobertEllsberg
to edit and publish.
"It has been said that it’s good to live each day as though it were your last, but that’s not really practical. Living this *month* as though it is my last, however, is working out well for me, and I can recommend it."
I'm showing my age in this video--as is the nuclear era. But this piece by
@CBSNews
on the dangers of the last half century--and right now--could hardly be better!
50 years ago today, the New York Times published its first story about the Pentagon Papers, exposing the truth about the war in Vietnam. In this podcast from
@GroundTruth
&
@UMassAmherst
, I reveal what led me to blow the whistle on the war:
The UK is complicit with the US in criminalizing journalism. I call on
@JoeBiden
and
@TheJusticeDept
to drop the extradition and prosecution of Julian Assange.
I’m sickened to see this shameful betrayal of the Kurds —US arming/using them for our purposes, then abandoning them to be massacred—replayed for the seventh time in my lifetime. See my forecast last time (2003) 1/
I've wanted this story of the "Lavender Hill Mob" out for over 40 years.
@GarAlperovitz
's decision now to reveal his own (key) role, along with others, in the publications of the Pentagon Papers, is a challenge to the Trump/Sessions war on the press.
From
@MichaelEllsberg

3/ Here is Judge Matthew Byrne's statement dismissing the charges against me and Tony Russo, on May 12, 1973. AG Garland should take similar action on Assange this week. And if that doesn't happen, the UK High Court should dismiss the appeal. /
2/ These governmental crimes include illegal, warrantless surveillance, conspiracy to "totally incapacitate me" and--in the words of my judge--"bizarre events" that "offend a sense of justice." All of these apply exactly to the just-revealed crimes against Assange.

Pundits are out praising my father as a way of denouncing

We will be arranging a public Zoom memorial for Daniel in the coming months. This will be announced here on Daniel's Twitter with plenty of advance notice. Thank you.
Trump's war on the free press--his "Enemy of the People"--escalated to a new and dangerous height yesterday, unveiling the first indictment in our history of a publisher: for the crime of committing unauthorized journalism.
Daniel surrendering to federal authorities in Boston on 6/28/71. Patricia is on the left. Reporter: "Do you have any concerns about the possibility of going to prison for this?"
Daniel: "Wouldn't you go to prison to help end this war?"
2/ Assange is facing the charges under the Espionage Act that I was the first to face 49 years ago, for revealing truths to the American public that the US government had wrongly kept secret.
The panel starts at 20:32; the introduction is worth watching, but repeats (a glitch).
As a human, I am proud of the thousands of Russian citizens who are braving prison for protesting non-violently Putin's aggression in Ukraine. Join me in sending them this message of solidarity:

If the US can extradite for prosecution a foreign publisher like Julian Assange for publishing true information and documents, then no journalist in the world is safe from imprisonment in the US for the rest of their lives. 1/

I encourage insiders who know we are being sold war with North Korea on false pretenses: consider doing what I should have done much earlier than I did. Consider going to Congress and the press directly with documents that show the truth to the public.
People should vote for Biden--who is not a progressive--without illusions, with eyes open to his severe shortcomings. But not to vote for Biden is to close your eyes to the disastrous consequences for climate and democracy of 4 more years of Trump.
