The problem with film criticism is that we often judge a movie for what we WANT it to do, rather than for what it's actually DOING.

Re-watching INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, and isn't it odd how its prologue shows us how Indy got his hat, and his fear of snakes, and the scar on his chin, and his first time cracking a whip, and I love it so much, yet countless movies do the same thing now and I hate it.

I will never understand the appeal of taking a character who was defined in a particular film and telling us a story PRIOR to that story. Before DIE HARD, John McClane was a lowly NYC beat cop who neglected his wife and never took off his shoes. Who wants to see that?

People laugh when MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE—FALLOUT is mentioned in the same breath as MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, but people forget that action movies are about ACTION, not dialogue. That Ethan refused to kill in cold blood earlier but now does THIS tells you everything about his character.

My favorite thing about BATMAN & ROBIN is that, even though I legit thought it was the worst comic book movie I'd ever seen back in 1997, there's been at least a dozen comic book movies since then that are arguably worse. Happy 26th, you big, colorful weirdo.

The vichyssoise bit in BATMAN RETURNS. I always love when Batman films show us how disconnected Bruce is with the upper class he's supposed to embody. Bruce's baffled stare and then eating the soup he clearly didn't enjoy a second before is top-tier characterization in my book.

Seeing a lot of HOME ALONE slander on my tl, and yeah, it's cool to hate on a thing, but it's cooler to point out what a thing does well. There's more to HOME ALONE than its LOONEY TUNES-esque climax, in particular some visual storytelling that bests "better" movies. 1/6🧵

I said this same thing sometime ago, but the style of Burton's BATMAN lends itself 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘺 well to silent film aesthetics. Keep the Elfman score, and it's a match made in expressionist heaven.

This is kind of cheating, but I edited Tim Burton's Batman (1989) into a silent film and I rewatch it so often. One of my favorite creative exercises I've ever done, speaks to Burton's visual genius that the film still works so well without sound.

One thing I was NOT expecting from #MissionImpossible7 were TWO scenes where characters look at Ethan Hunt with tears in their eyes and realize—perhaps for the 1st time—that someone values their life above his own. Powerful, emotional stuff for a franchise not built on emotions.

Your regular reminder that Bill Murray played live-action Peter Venkman in GHOSTBUSTERS while Lorenzo Music voiced cartoon Venkman in THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS. Music also voiced cartoon Garfield in GARFIELD AND FRIENDS while Murray voiced live-action Garfield in GARFIELD: THE MOVIE.

A reminder that Raimi's SPIDER-MAN 2 is the most 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 superhero movie ever made. And the most life-affirming.

If a superhero film "deserved" to win awards, it's INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE. It broke the rules for what animated films can do. It broke the rules for what comic book films can do. It broke the rules for what representation can do for comic book films. ITSV will be studied for AGES.

@CrookedTable I especially love Cavill's nod of utter respect.

Just a reminder that—despite some weird narrative choices—Sam Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN 3 is still a thematically rich, emotionally resonant story about narcissism, revenge, and forgiveness.

@BenjaminCrew1 @littlelostsunny That goofiness is honestly the sexiest thing I've seen on a screen. That look. Those moves. See how Bacall full on becomes the center of gravity in that room. See how she charms Bogey. See how she delights in charming Bogey. This shot alone is pure absolute MAGIC.

My favorite Cary Grant performance is from NOTORIOUS. He's so atypically cold for the first ¾ths, but when he finally gets over himself and fights for what he loves, he OWNS the screen. Giving Bergman the strength she needs, sending Rains off to his doom. A 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳. #TCMParty

@strangeharbors @IMDBartlett I really think the problem is that comic book nerds (a term I apply to myself) spent so much time as kids wishing that superspandex movies would get the respect they "deserve," and now that they've got what they want, they feel it's their to right to bully others into submission.

Just finished BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA with the kids, who spent the entire movie cackling and shouting, "What the HECK?" So I'd call tonight a monumental success.

My favorite thing about SHE-HULK? It's the first MCU project that my daughter decided she'd watch with me. She liked it so much, she just asked to watch the final two episodes again, even though we finished the show last night. So bring it, Matt Murdock and K.E.V.I.N.!

@tj_mackey432 The INSTANT he steps outside that building, you can feel the franchise take an evolutionary leap and become something else entirely.
