I am an array of mobile/deployable weather radars (DOWs/COW), weather stations, disdrometers, mesonets, & soundings. Hosted by UIUC. I look best in Carbone42.
In this day in DOW history:
🌪️I documented the detailed evolution and structure of multiple vortices for the 1st time.
🌪️I measured winds exceeding 300 mph over Bridgecreek, Oklahoma where it caused F5 damage.
4 years ago today...
#HurricaneHarvey
held together at landfall...which is rare...my people managed to get me in the eye...and in addition to sampling mesovortices, tornado scale vortices (TSVs) were documented and linked with enhanced damage.
Evolution of tornadoes north of Benkelman, NE on 26 May from 2207:41 UTC to 2222:37 UTC. Doppler Velocity left; Radar Reflectivity right. (Told you I look best in Carbone42 😀)
The most studied tornado in history! 12 years ago today, VORTEX2 made history! The most comprehensive tornado data set ever. Read about the great science (& see some cool videos!):

Wishing you moderate reflectivity, low positive ZDR, and high Rho-HV this holiday season ❄️! Wishing your transmitter, receiver, signal processing, and antenna good health in the new year!
En route home from the southeast…some supercells were noticed…had to stop and take a look. Tornado near Lockett, TX observed a little after 2100 CDT on 5/4/2022.

Tornadoes capable of deadly EF4 damage are much more common than previously thought. A recent study using DOW data reveals that >20% of tornadoes can cause EF4 damage, if they hit towns, like what happened in KY last week.
Apparently there IS something north of i-80 in Illinois 😱😁…a few buildings near some pond…and me (& some people dressed in orange and blue) 😁! Great fun hanging out with
@CODMeteorology
community!

! Stop by and say hi! And…
What’s better than me? More me 😁!
Free stickers of me that you can take home so you can look at me day and night 🤩. See how happy these two random people are to be gifted with a sticker of me 🤩
Snug as a radar truck in a blanket of snow 🥰❄️ (which is much better than being snug as a bug in a rug 😁). Ready to get this
@nsf_lee
data collection started!
Noooo…don’t leave parts of me!! Much thanks to the people who let me deploy in their field…and then helped me leave their field!! Got some great data for
@PERiLS_Project
IOP3!
Looking at the vortices over Lake Michigan makes me nostalgic for when I was a young DOW studying
#lake
-effect snow ❄️over Lake Ontario with my OWLeS friends 🥰
Take a look at what they have learned:
My people decided that maybe we should go out today *before* any tornado might occur...so I got some exercise jogging around eastern CO. Here’s me scanning the likely tornado strength circulation south of Akron, CO just after 21Z.
The
@NSF
First Annual Radar Institute
@ATMS_Illinois
led by
@JoshuaWurman
@karen_kosiba
and
@70_dbz
is wrapping up…one more day …🐄 disassembly and presentations by the students from data they collected with me 😁. What a wonderful group…and I am so photogenic 😁📸
My hydraulic fluid smells like cologne. When it rains, it’s because I am thinking of something sad. My paint never chips. I live vicariously through myself. I am the most interesting radar in the world. 🤣
I am a VIR (Very Important Radar) 😁! Getting escorted to my site for
@nsf_lee
to sample lake effect snow east of Lake Ontario. Stay tuned for all things snow ❄️⚡️throughout the day (and night)!

No puppies…just me waving hi 👋 (which is much better than a puppy 😁!) Hanging out at
@NCAR_Science
this week to talk about my favorite subject…me doing science 😁!
The week is off to a good start…Barney featured on the
@CBSNewsColorado
dog walk forecast 🥰 and
@DOWFacility
up and ready to talk radar 😃 for the FARE user workshop
@NCAR_Science
this week!
The best sites for

School of DOW 🎓!
Hanging out at Oswego High this morning talking about my favorite subject…me 🤩
So many great questions…every got an A in DOW 😁

I am baaaack!
Come talk tornadoes🌪️, hurricanes 🌬️, and radar 📡 with me 😀...or any other type of weather ⛈️!
...and feel free to bring your extra Halloween candy ... Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, preferred 😁
Super Science Saturday is in person at the NCAR Mesa Lab on Sat, Nov. 4! We are jazzed to host people of all ages for this free science celebration. See a weather balloon launch, do a jig with Jeff & Paige, learn about Earth science on wheels, and end with the ping pong finale.
Street-level DOW radar mapping of

@NWSBoulder
The DOWs have left the building!
@PERiLS_Project
has come to a close. We had a great experience working with so many students, collecting data in QLCSs. Now the data QC and analysis begins! But 1st…BEST! We will be headed to the plains to study low-level winds in tornadoes!
I seem to draw a crowd wherever go…😁. Ok…so, maybe it is a radar meteorology class 😁. But I will teach them a lot … and that person who wrote a book on radar meteorology will teach them more 😁
Hanging out with my pals from across the country for
@PERiLS_Project
media day! Excited to work together to collect data and learn more about southeastern U.S. tornadoes! 🌪️
Trained and set-up for
@PERiLS_Project
IOP1! Almost 30 crew from
@ATMS_Illinois
& NCSU ready to crew 11 instrumented vehicles…radars, mesonets, pods, and soundings. Stay safe out there! …and feel free to come say hi if you see us around.
After a trillion snowflakes, a billion RHIs, a million PPIs, thousands of coffees and donuts…it is a wrap for me at
@nsf_lee
❄️⚡️💙❄️! It was a privilege working with the amazing science team and the talented students! Off to new adventures for
@PERiLS_Project
🌪️!
Family photo before COW heads east for the First Annual Radar Institute! We will miss you…but see you soon! The rest of us still have some tornado chasing to do beforehand 🌪️🌪️🌪️!
A couple images from earlier in the Benkelman, NE tornadoes. (my people will post a high-res loop at some point...they know radars...but not how to use video compressing software)
Evolution of tornadoes north of Benkelman, NE on 26 May from 2207:41 UTC to 2222:37 UTC. Doppler Velocity left; Radar Reflectivity right. (Told you I look best in Carbone42 😀)
I am baaaaaaack! Happy to be here to support
@nsf_lee
❄️⚡️! It’s been too long…since the OWLeS lake-effect scow project in 2014! I was first introduced to lake effect snow by
@SteigerScott
in 2010! Come visit me Sat (11/5) between 2-4 PM at SUNY Oswego Shineman Center!
Proving once again…there’s more than corn in Indiana 😁🌽📡. Crow wearing a one-piece bathing suit = out 🚫; Shiny blue radar truck = in ✅🤣! Thanks
@ValpoWeather
for hanging out with me this afternoon!
My humans inspiring little humans to like big blue weather radar trucks because, of course! 🤣), strange pickup trucks, & balloons 😁.
@PERiLS_Project
has ended for the year, but we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit one of the Memphis area schools today!
Seven states later…a bit of road salt…and about 20 degrees less of Fahrenheit 😁
@WINTRE_MIX
(also is it possible we are not the coolest vehicles in our NY hotel??)
If I deploy, they will come
(I don’t understand why a baseball field in a cornfield is so interesting…I am in cornfields so often 🤣…but DOW on a pier, much more movie worthy 😁)
