Had a thought-provoking chat on Saturday with a young birder at Strumpshaw (new to the hobby) stating how they'd previously been made to feel "uncomfortably judged when they make ID mistakes" by more experienced folks. Hear this... ALL BIRDERS MAKE MISTAKES! Please keep going. ๐Ÿ™

Trekking through the New Forest off the beaten path (and away from the crowds) has its rewards! Displaying Goshawk, several Hawfinch, Crossbill and Jack Snipe topped a decent day's haul. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ˜ #HantsBirds

All calm at Whitlingham CP this evening, as a welcome drake Goosander flew over high east. If that wasn't exciting enough, not one, not two, but THREE BITTERN put in appearances at dusk. A site record for me! #LocalBigYear #NorwichBirds ๐Ÿคฉ

Finally made it to #Shetland ! A first for me, and very excited to see what this coming week will bring. For now though, day one's highlight must be self-found BLUE TIT (shortly followed by an Olive-backed Pipit and two Barred Warblers)!๐Ÿ˜‚

I'm not in Norfolk anymore, being 1215m above my comfort zone today. Dipping Ptarmigan was less than ideal, but a flock of 200 Snow Bunting at the summit was impressive. Views were OK too I guess. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ

After a tough couple of days for me and my family, I took a dusk walk around Whitlingham for some much needed head space. Surprised to see that a Bittern had returned to Great Broad! Amazing how nature can provide such an uplift at times. #YareValleyBirds #NorwichBirds

A special evening at Cantley Beet Factory, adding a self-found SPOTTED CRAKE to my #localbigyear . Thankfully, it showed fairly well at dusk for a couple of lucky locals, plus a spectacular sunset behind. #rbnNFK #YareValleyBirds ๐Ÿคฉ

Another #Shetland trip comes to an end, but what a week it's been: Pechora Pipit (self-found), Lancy, Mrytle Warbler (x2), Least Bittern and White's Thrush! Not to mention a fantastic showing of the aurora, and a couple of fearless Otter doing their thing too. ๐Ÿ˜

My 2022 birding year featured: self-found Pechora Pipit (Shetland), stooping Eleonora's Falcon (Cyprus), displaying Steller's Eider (Estonia) and a #LocalBigYear of 165 species - the highest scoring inland 10km area afaik, including finds like Honey Buzzard and Spotted Crake! ๐Ÿ˜

First afternoon in Cyprus and excited to have got the trip going with a quick twitch for a national mega! This MOURNING WHEATEAR showed brilliantly, enjoying the beach umbrellas as scenic perches. #CyprusBirds ๐Ÿ˜›๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡พ

Canary Islands trip off to a flyer in Fuerteventura. Incredible landscape with a top class suite of birds including Houbara Bustard, Cream-coloured Courser and Red-billed Tropicbird! The local Great Grey Shrikes here are a treat too. ๐Ÿ‘Œ ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ

A great morning with squabbling Stone Curlew and singing Woodlark, followed by blue skies, displaying Goshawk and close views of Crossbill along some the Breck's less-visited woodland tracks. ๐Ÿ˜
